There’s a few factors that can greatly effect hair growth: diet, overall health, hormones, and hair/scalp health.

The one thing that stuck out to me when reading about your diet was the soy. Soy is known to moderately effect hormones (mimics estrogen in the body) and when you suddenly up your intake, it could throw things off balance. It could be contributing, so try to cut back a bit. Keep drinking that water & eating healthy!

Have you started any new medications?

Stimulating the blood circulation on the scalp is an awesome trick to encourage hair growth, however it sounds like you may be overdoing it. Which electric scalp massager did you purchase, and how often do you use it? How often do you use the scalp scrub? If it’s causing dandruff, it’s probably not the best option for you. Doing a quick 2 minute scalp massage daily can stimulate the circulation without being too harsh on the skin (I do this with my normal conditioner- but this is where an oil mixture or serum will come in handy).

I would recommend for you:

Shampoo with Davines Energizing Shampoo and condition with Davines Replumping Conditioner. This stuff gets pricey at full retail, but it WORKS. The energizing line is full of ingredients that target hair loss. The replumping line moisturizes from the inside out. Davines is cruelty free and vegan too! There’s only about 4,000 salons across the US that carry them, BUT you can order online through amazon (it’s the legit stuff too, they have some kind of contract to keep “black market” sales down).

Massage your scalp 2-3 days a week, or every day if you can. I have two good product recommendations for you: a serum from the Davines energizing line, and an easy homemade oil.

Davines Energizing Superactive
Be sure to get the traditional superactive as it’s designed for hormonal hair loss (this sounds closer to what you’re experiencing) rather than the seasonal.

Homemade oil mixture -
3 parts jojoba oil (closest to the skins natural pH and best for absorption)
1 part castor oil (antifungal properties)
1 part oil of your choice (tea tree for more cleanse, almond or lavender if you’ve got a sensitive scalp)

Rub in your scalp and use your fingers to massage for 2-5 minutes. The serum you can leave in indefinitely, the oil you will want to shampoo out.

Treating hair thinning/loss at the beginning stages is the best way to combat it!!! Your hair follicles are most likely still active since this is a recent problem. You just gotta wake ‘em up a bit! Keep your scalp clean and stimulated, and your ends moisturized. Stay away from hot tools! Skip the blow dryer and iron if that’s a normal thing in your routine.

As for brushing, look into a wide tooth comb or Wet brush. Anything that puts a lot of tension on the hair will only pull out what you want to keep! Brush as needed but don’t overdo it.

I hope this wasn’t too much at once! Please feel free to ask any questions if you need me to clarify or provide some more info!

Source: licensed cosmetologist for 8 years. Worked with these products first hand and have recommended this same routine to many clients!

Edit - I added a question about medications. These can definitely have an effect!

Wow thank you so much for all the info. Regarding soy, I have eaten soy as my primary source of protein and never had any issues. From homemade soymilk to daily tofu blocks and to sometimes edamame. I have done it for years and never had any problems, unless it’s catching up. I began cutting it recently, hope it helps.

> Have you started any new medications?

No new medication, but different vitamins (D3, zinc, biotin)

Today was the first time trying it out for 10 minutes and had about 10 loose hairs in my shirt by the time I was finished. I also use or used a wood hair brush for about 2-5 minutes and same thing. There was a large amount of hair by the time I was finished. A lot of dandruff would fall off also.

I’m beginning to think besides hormone unbalance, I could have some sort of fungus scalp blocking the air. Like I said, the hair brush would take out a large amount of dandruff. I used a hair scrub in the shower yesterday and same thing, I noticed dandruff in my hair during the day. Something I never had. Perhaps the brush and scrub is cleaning up my scalp and all the built up dandruff.

I’m going to look into these. Quite honestly I’m a bit paranoid when it comes to anti hair loss products. I feel the simpler a shampoo is the better. I usually use this one

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0016BC2BM?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_yo_pop_mb_pd_t2

And tried this one when the hair loss started happening

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07CSMTPWL?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_yo_pop_mb_pd_t2

For some reason I decided to wash my hair with warm water (always cold water) and that’s when my hair began falling out.

Definitely a lot of great info here. Will this help with the dandruff?

Edit: btw I only wash my hair every third day, but by the second day my hair is already too oily. Almost as if I had gel on and my scalp feels warm ( could be the warm weather of Southern California, but still feels warm)and a little itchy.

Sulfate Free Shampoos & Conditioners:

u/cidiem · 1 pointr/FierceFlow

I don't mind sharing, but to be honest I don't do much to it. The main reason I haven't cut it is because it's easy to manage at this length. I mean, I have a specific styling routine, but it's pretty much use conditioner, dry with a shirt, work in some styling paste, gently comb through with a wide tooth comb, shake my head a few times, let it air dry, and fluff it up when it's mostly dry.

Good for you for growing it 8 months! Keep it up! That was an awkward stage for me (link) but I would get a trim every 8 weeks or so to clean up the back while I waited for the front to catch up. I was very adamant that I did not want my stylist to trim anything off the front. They would only trim up the back/neck and even out the sides so I wouldn't have a mullet lol it took FOREVER for the hair in the front to be long enough to pull it into a ponytail, but I'm there now.

Anyway, more specifically, I use two products mainly. Aussie Mega Moist Conditioner to clean and moisturize and Suave Men Medium Hold Styling Paste to style. I like the styling paste because it holds the curls together without feeling too hard or making my hair look wet. It has a nice matte finish. For shampoo I'm not picky. I use whatever my wife buys. Usually whatever is cheap and sulfate free. I think she buys Tresemme brand. I can't bring myself to spend more than $5 on hair products so I make due with what's cheap.

I wash with conditioner every day. I use shampoo about once a week to wash off any buildup from the styling paste. When I get out of the shower I gently lay my towel over my head and press against my head from front to back to get the bulk of the water out. I never agitate my hair or move the towel back and forth. Then I use an old t shirt to grab chunks of my hair and squeeze out excess water. Again being careful not to agitate the hair. I'm not using a pulling motion.

Then I part my hair with my fingers where I want it. I take a finger full of the styling paste and rub it between my palms and work it into my hair starting at the front and working back. I focus mainly on the top layer of hair, I don't run it through my hair. It's more like I'm spreading it onto my hair, if that makes sense. Then I grab another finger full of paste and do the same with the back but I use a scrunching motion to work the product into my curls in the back. Then (this might be controversial) I take a wide tooth comb and do one pass through my hair from root to tip. Only one time. This shapes it and works the product through a little better. I will lightly fluff it up and shape the curls after I comb it, otherwise it dries straight and flat. Then I let it air dry. When it's mostly dry I'll fluff it up and shape it some more.

But that's it. I don't use any hair spray or leave in conditioner. I probably could but I'm happy with how my hair turns out must days and I don't spend too much money so that's a plus.

You probably have buildup on your scalp. The apple cider vinegar can be a good way to rinse your hair but it’ll burn like fire if your scalp is raw.

Try this:

  • Wash with Suave Clarifying Shampoo. (I pay $2 for it at Target and the grocery store, but I’m using Amazon.com links just for convenience sakes.) Use your fingertips (not your nails) to gently massage your scalp and then rinse thoroughly.

  • Condition with Suave Essentials Coconut Conditioner. Again, massage scalp gently and use a lot of conditioner to cover hair from roots to tips. Rinse thoroughly.

  • Condition one more time, but this time leave a little conditioner in your hair. Some people like to gently splash their hair with water to distribute it evenly rather than allowing the shower water to hit it directly (which would just rinse one spot completely and force all the excess conditioner to another spot. Either way, gently squish your hair from ends up to the roots using a scrunching motion until the water is just slightly milky when it squished out. Maybe leaving 10% of the conditioner in your hair?

  • Eschew ALL of your mousses, gels, sprays, waxes, etc in favor of ‘curly girl approved’ options. Just google those words and you’ll see what you can replace your current products with.

You may have to repeat step 1 a couple times to get rid of the buildup but it’ll happen, I promise!

As for the science behind all of this, it’s my weak area so bear with me:

  1. This shampoo has sulfates (harsh cleansers) but no silicones (stuff that costs each individual strand to make it feel soft). My theory is it strips your hair of the junk that has been deposited by previous products and is basically sitting on your scalp being gross. The shampoo is just shampoo, though, and even though it has sulfates it is designed to be gentle on skin.

  2. The conditioner adds back some moisture to your scalp and hair after you’ve stripped it of the funk. It also has no silicones so it won’t deposit any grossness. It just gently moisturizes (this is why we massage it in).

  3. Of you’re a true curly girl, your hair is probably dry but your scalp (in its normal non-gunky state) isn’t. You need to leave just a little conditioner in your hair so it’ll continue to hang around the strands make it shiny and (most importantly) manageable.

4- None of this works if you go putting a bunch of silicone back on it via gels and other styling products. Drying alcohols are also prevalent in these and we avoid those too.

There are TONS of great methods and products (I use the cheapest ones in the instructions above because why invest a lot until you know it works, right?) in subs like r/curlyhair. It can be overwhelming at first because there’s a lot of science behind all of this but there are also tutorials for simple methods.

    I hope that helps. :)

You guys are honestly boosting the SHIT out of my self esteem haha especially now with this hair question. I have been fighting with my hair all my life and just recently am I starting to accept it, so I'd be happy to talk about it.

The first step was coming to terms with the fact that I'll never have "easy" straight, moldable hair. My hair is pretty wavy and VERY frizzy, and it takes a lot to tame it...but I'll let you in on my secret weapon: the "It's A Ten" line of product.

It's a godsend. Every day I condition with this, I shampoo only once or twice a week (since my hair is already naturally dry and shitty) with this, and on days that I shampoo I put this in after to curb the inevitable frizz. All their stuff is kind of expensive but since I only have a few inches of hair it lasts me for EVER.

After I shower I sorta pat my hair dry. Tussling it dry with a towel poofs it up, damages it, and encourages frizz, so I just pat and let it air dry. Before it's fully dry and it has frizzed up I put in some high-hold medium-shine pomade (Suavecito and Layrite are my favorites) and style it as such!

Oh, and if you're a guy then I can't recommend this enough: get a great barber and stick with him. Not only is it a cool relationship, but a good haircut makes everything way easier. Plus, the more you go to them the more they understand your hair, so it only gets better!

If you actually read this novel about how I do my hair, I am rewarding you with this picture of my hair when I was like 15. Pretty scary.

I highly recommend exploring Aveda hair care products. Kind of expensive but they're such high quality goods. All natural, no animal testing, and sooo many options for your hair depending on whether you have a specific issue you'd like to treat or just a nice scent. I have very long hair
that can get oily (charming right?) And their rosemary mint is the bomb. http://m.aveda.com

I don't know if you have Jean Madeline Salons or Aveda Salons where you live, but if you can locate one it would be worth it to go once and get a consultation about what to use.

Alternatively, I've had good luck with this product, which you might want to check out in the citrus scent (scroll down). Also very natural but you'd have to check into the brand's ethics, I've never looked. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00B7K7QI6/ref=oh_aui_i_sh_in_o1_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The only time ive loved being a ginger was when i used henna. Heres the exact brand I used, although i do think you can get it cheaper off amazon.
Only problem is consistent color relies on consistent application process. Like you need to use the same amount of water, the same kind of tea/amount of lemon juice (if youre going to try to change the tone one way or another), and let it sit the same amount of time regularly.

Ive had every color of the rainbow and every shade over the last few years and this was by far my favorite way to dye and favorite color to have, its super fun just make sure to do your research if you end up going with it! Its also the cheapest so 👌👌👌

Finally heres a video tutorial that helped me out a lot. Good luck!

Edit: also i should say this stuff does NOT fade. You really only have to worry about root touch ups. The color will change over the first few days as it like... oxidized? Idk. But after that even bleach doesn’t get this stuff out all the way. So super cheap, fairly easy, and really, really permanent.

I know, the number of Shea Moisture products is overwhelming. I did a bunch of research before I bought their products. I'd say that the internet's favorite styling products are these:

  • The Curl Enhancing Smoothie. This is more like a leave-in than a gel. It's a nice and heavy product, which I really like. It has some protein in it. My hair is protein sensitive and it's too much for regular use.
  • Moisture retention conditioner. This is super moisturizing and protein free. It's a bit lighter than the smoothie. The advantage of this product is that you can use it as a leave-in or rinse out or deep conditioner. I've gotten great results from using it as a leave-in. I'm using it less lately because I think it made my hair over-moisturized. Like it feels too soft now.
  • Jamaican Black Castor Oil Reparative Leave-In Conditioner. I've never tried this but it's well loved. It has a lot of protein which some people like.
  • If you want something lighter, the new Fruit Fusion Mousse is well liked. (Not to be confused with the 10 in 1 super fruit line.) I've never used this product either but I want to try it.

Love this idea! Maybe once we grow a bit more we can do more specific threads, too. This sub has been a wealth of information already, I love it.

Hair
Description: I have long curly hair. My goal is to keep it voluminous on top, and not-frizzy with defined loose corkscrews on the bottom. Similar Similar I do the "no-poo"/Curly Girl Method method which eliminates sulfates and silicones.

Tresemme Naturals Moisturizing Conditioner: I used to be a firm believer in using expensive hair care products exclusively. I used Redken for many years, then wandered into DevaCurl territory when I started No-Poo. Nothing was able to detangle, soften, and moisturize my hair just right, until THIS!

Shea Moisture Restorative Conditioner I use this as a leave-in conditioner. Gels and mousse have worked similarly, but my husband hates the crunchy feel. This holds my curls, yet keeps them soft and touchable.

Skin
Description: I'm 25, used to tan, but after noticing a sun spot, I stopped! Since then, I've been focused on anti-aging and taking good care of my skin.

Biore Sunscreen SPF 50 this is the product that changed my life and stopped my skin from aging. Not greasy, no whitecast, sits well under makeup. I can't recommend Asian sunscreen enough, and this one is my favorite!

Perfume
Elizabeth and James Nirvana White "peony, chic muguet, and tender musk for a feminine scent with dark sophistication" so lovely. The first perfume my husband stopped to specifically comment on! Honorable mention to Nirvana Bourbon as well. In fact, has anyone here tried the Nirvana Rose? I'm interested but unfortunately don't have a way to smell it for free where I live!

I have fragrance allergies too, it sucks! I’ve used Earth Science Fragrance Free Shampoo and Earth Science Fragrance Free Conditioner as well as Jason Fragrance Free Shampoo and Jason Fragrance Free Conditioner.

The Earth Science feels like a typical shampoo. The Jason shampoo feels like a slippery aloe vera. I prefer the Jason product myself as the cost for 32oz is the same as a 12oz of the Earth Science. My husband won’t use the Jason shampoo though, he says it feels too weird.

If you go with the Earth Science check them out on Walgreens website as that’s the best price I’ve found. I actually reordered more yesterday for my husband.

Edit: I made a subreddit a while back for fragrance free products, r/FragranceFreeLife if you’re interested in checking it out.

This happens to me every month or so (at least). my hair is straight and thick but I think my lil system I came up with will work for any hair type.

Materials:

  1. Put oil throughout hair and focus on the knots
  2. Put conditioner throughout hair- again focus on the knots.
  3. Let products sit for awhile. I’ll usually take a nice relaxing bath while my hair is marinating in oil and conditioner lol
  4. Shower. Shampoo your scalp and rinse out the oil/conditioner. After everything is rinsed out, use the conditioner again the same way you did in step 2. While the conditioner is in your hair, you can use the Wet Brush to start brushing some out.
  5. After 10min, rinse out the conditioner and make sure it is ALL out.
  6. Towel dry hair
  7. Put leave-in conditioner allllll over your hair and massage it in
  8. Use the hair oil again on your ends and in the knots.
  9. Start brushin. Start brushing from the ends and work your way up- it’s much easier. Sometimes I rub some of the hair oil on the tips of my brush to give a lil more lubrication to it lol. You can keep applying oil as needed.

You may have to shower one more time if you used a lot of oil and/or if your hair looks greasy

I hope I helped!!!! It’s definitely an undertaking and this is what I use every single time!!!!
u/syaami · 5 pointsr/HaircareScience

I have not tried Wen(it's too expensive) but I've used Loreal's cowashing conditioner. I find it works good on my hair. I did want to try Wen but upon reading the reviews (which said it's better or just as good as Wen) I decided to just go with the Loreal. Look through the reviews, there's a lot of people comparing it to Wen.

I've tried cowashing with just conditioner and I find it's more work than the Loreal cowashing conditioner. Normal conditioner requires a little bit more massaging and staying in the shower longer if I don't want to have greasy hair by the end of the day. But the Loreal stuff lathers a little(it's still creamy). It also smells amazing and my hair is super soft and doesn't feel weighed down.

I don't follow CG method but I use certain products to come up with my own routine.

Hair Wash Day-

Step 1: I comb through and massage my scalp and hair with Avocado Oil and use the Vanity Planet Scalp Massage and let it soak in for an hour. I specially use more oil on the ends.

Step 2: I use a hot towel to steam my hair a few times by the end of the hour

Step 3: Use OGX Biotin and Collagen Shampoo to wash off the oil.

Step 4:Condition with Cantu Hydrating Cream Conditioner

Step 5: Use a microfiber head wrap or a tshirt to remove excess water

Step 6: I then use a couple of dollops of Miss. Jessie's Pillow Soft Curl Cream and scrunch my hair .

Step 7, for the top of my head hair I use Frizz Ease serum and comb through and make it sit in place with Bobby pins(This makes the top part straight without me having to use heat at all)

Step 8: I let it dry naturally

Days following the wash:

--Post-Workout Care: I workout a lot and sweat in the scalp like cray-cray so I always wet my hair completely after the workout and use the already existing products in the hair to set it back, letting it dry naturally.

--Days after wash morning routine: I braid my hair at night and when I wake up the curls are almost always intact. But I do use a spray bottle already mixed with a few drops of Curl cream and re-scrunch the curls and let dry naturally.

--Next wash Schedule? -- I usually wash on day 3 with just Cantu's scalp rinse and use the conditioner. But like today if I don't have the time, I wet my hair completely by spraying water all over in sections and follow Step 6,7 and 8.

I do the deep oil conditioning atleast once a week. That is the only time I use the shampoo. For every following wash after the oil conditioning I use Palmer's Coconut Oil Formula Conditioner instead of regular conditioners.

I am no expert, other than my almost 2 yeard. Here is what I do & I do not have problems with itchy, dandruff, etc.

Clean:
I use Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap. http://www.amazon.com/Grandpas-Soap-Co-Pine-Ounces/dp/B00028LN1K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373586004&sr=8-1&keywords=grandpa+pine+tar

I use it for my head, beard, and really, everything else. Never use dandruff shampoos. This is great for the whole body, and easy to bring with you.

>I see some people say L is liquid (water) while others say L is leave-in conditioner.

It depends on your personal preference. I think if your hair is a finer grade you should use water but that is just what I do.

>Is pure olive oil good enough for O?

Yes but it depends on your hair's porosity. If olive oil works for you that's fine. I prefer fractionated coconut oil personally but my hair is pretty porous. Grapeseed oil is also good, so is castor oil, for porous hair. Low porosity hair likes lighter oils such as sweet almond or argan. It depends on what you like on your hair.

>And what is creme? How does it differ from leave-in?

A heavier moisturizer than what you use for leave in. If you're using water for your LOC you can probably get away with using leave-in for your cream step. As I Am Double Butter Rich Daily Moisturizer is an example of a commercial moisturizing cream for the hair. You can also use some type of pomade, and many people use whipped shea butter instead of a commercial cream. I guess it just depends on your preference.

>I have the horrid 4c, low porosity hair for anyone wondering.

Nuu :C don't be mean to your hairs

Edit:

oh btw if your hair is low porosity you should put your conditioners in the microwave before you apply them I think.

I can't speak to the dandruff issue, but I'm also recovering from lots of straightening! I've found that using a good leave-in every time I wash and style has helped a ton (also, this might be extra useful for you if you'll still be using dandruff shampoo). I use this. It's pretty heavy so I use it super sparingly, but it leaves my strands soft, shiny, and moisturized. I'm not sure this is available in the UK, but maybe keep an eye out for something like it!

Editing to add that weekly deep conditioning with coconut oil has also worked wonders.

u/niftynonsense · 4 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

I recommend the argan oil conditioner by OGX to pretty much everyone. I bleach and dye my hair a lot and people always tell me it looks and feels super healthy regardless. My hair is also super fine and it doesn't weigh it down, which is great because I co-wash with it too!

u/hoodlumprincess · 1 pointr/raisedbynarcissists

I have very curly thick hair. I'm Asian and black. I don't wash my hair everyday. I use container every 2 days to comb out my hair with a wide tooth. I use Aussie Moist. Then I wash my hair with shampoo once a week. Sounds weird but since you have curly hair you really don't have to shampoo it all the time. That will dry it out, and then your scalp will be super oily and the bottom of your hair will get dry and break off. Then I use Argan oil to keep my hair shiny soft and healthy.

I also have pcos. Do you take birth control? diet never helped my skin, I use Neutroguena even tone face wash. Then I use Alphahydrox face lotion. My face doesn't break out anymore. I also use Jason tea tree body wash for my back and chest acne. It really helped. Also make sure you wear cotton shirts and clean bras! Change your pillow case every 2 days and your sheets once a week :)

That tresemme leaves my hair super frizzy, oddly, and mine is only wavy. My hair is like a giant triangle when I use it, haha. maybe it's because my hair is so weightless naturally?

If the OGX line of shampoo/conditioners are okay here, the tea tree mint ones have been shockingly good at weighing my hair down without greasing it up. Bonus points: smells like a thin mint, makes scalp less itchy. Ah, found it: shampoo and conditioner

I also like the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shampoo and Conditioner

u/honey-biscuit · 1 pointr/curlyhair

I think I'd try switching conditioners, your hair does seem thirsty!
I'm in the market for a new brand too, but I've had some luck with Cantu for Natural Hair. My hair will begin to feel weighed down after using it for weeks on end, but on and off I find it helps with my curl definition and keeping frizz at bay. Nowhere sells it as cheap as WalMart but still, it's not too pricey at the drugstore or through Amazon.
also keep shampoos to a minimum, maybe 2 a week, and don't towel dry at all. squish to condish would be a great technique to incorporate in the shower too, if you're not already doing that!

u/Ahriin · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

They aren't too terribly expensive, my favourite shampoo and conditioner combo is the Jason sea kelp or the Jason fragrance free shampoo and conditioner just be generous with the conditioner because the shampoo is very good at cleansing without being harsh. Usually you can find a value pack for like 20 dollars (each bottle is 32oz so they last forever) here are some Amazon links you could check out, I also really like Jason's aloe Vera gel.

To me it sounds like you have high porosity hair because of the medication. My mom had a similar issue with her hair becoming damaged after she bleached her hair so she could change the colour to a light grey (which it looks absolutely gorgeous now). First of all, do NOT use any heating tools (straightener/curling iron/blow-dryer). If you're anything like me and you feel like you absolutely have to, please use a heat protector. Secondly, do not brush your hair when it's wet. I would avoid anything with plastic beads on the end, combs and bristle brushes are your best friend right now (or finger detangling!!!!). Comb out the ends first, and keep going a few inches higher each time - this will save you from breakage. Try to brush your hair as little as possible though.

I encourage you to be absolutely filthy now as well. Wash your hair only when you absolutely need to (every 3-4 days is what I recommend, even longer than that if you can postpone it). Your hair gets greasy when not washed for the same reason your face will get oily, glands in the skin produce sebum. You want sebum to build up so it can moisten your hair and keep it from drying out, this is like a natural conditioner.

I also recommend a protein treatment for your hair as well. The accutane is sucking out all the moisture from your hair, so you're going to need to artificially put some back in. On top of this, I recommend leave in oils. Moroccan Oil is what I like to use. You only need a small amount and that full bottle has lasted me nearly two years - I use it every time I wash my hair and I absolutely love it. If you're looking for something a bit cheaper I can also recommend Morocco Oil. On top of all this, you may also want to do a deep hair conditioning 1-2 times a week. Unfortunately I have no recommendations on a product for this.

I hope your acne clears up though! Accutane was such a pain to take. It dried out my skin pretty badly when I was taking it, to the point that I just felt like stopping after a couple of months. However I didn't, kept taking it for 2 years, but my acne has not been an issue since!

u/geometric_kitten · 6 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

Thick, coarse, wavy hair checking in. Shea Moisture products have worked well for me, they're cheap, and you can get them on Amazon or at Target. Their whole line for dry, damaged hair is great (here's the conditioner), but my holy grail product is the strengthen & restore leave in conditioner. After I shower and pat my hair dry with a t-shirt, I use a small amount of this stuff on the ends of my hair and particularly frizzy areas like the very top, and sort of massage it in. My hair will never be super sleek and smooth, but this stuff makes it shiny and manageable at least! Just be careful because too much of the product may make your hair stringy and over-conditioned.

I think most of their products fit into the curly girl method if you're interested in try that.

u/fencedoffice · 5 pointsr/xxfitness

Honestly, once your body gets accustomed to a reduction in hair washing, the oil glands will stop producing as much. I cannot speak for hair smell though, but I believe this is true for oil/grease production!

I rinse off after workouts, but usually only wash my hair 2x a week (if that lol... sometimes more if I am being social).

https://www.amazon.com/Ethique-Eco-Friendly-Conditioner-Normal-Dry-Guardian/dp/B07572RXKP?th=1

I use that \^. I will only shampoo if I go a very long time w/o showering and my hair is greasy. After using this product, my hair looks like I recently washed it for probably up to 3 days if I brush it everyday! Bonus point if you buy/ or currently use an eco-friendly product to reduce plastic! (where my eco friend people at?!?!?)

Off topic, but I think excessive washing is the root cause of acne in the US. Products are advertised that makes people think they need to wash their face and hair 3x a day. This, is just silly though- if a person washes all the oil off their face or hair, the body is just going to start producing a mass amount of it.

u/EgregiousWeasel · 6 pointsr/FancyFollicles

I have a similar texture. I'm doing something based on the Curly Girl Method. I have seborrheic dermatitis, so I put tea tree oil in the conditioner wash I use.

Some days I use a sulfate free tea tree oil shampoo, and some days I co-wash with Suave Naturals Coconut Conditioner with a little tea tree oil mixed in. If you don't have scalp issues like I do, you can just use the conditioner by itself. I put a generous amount on my scalp and massage it in, then I put some Matrix Conditioning Balm on the ends and let it sit while I finish my shower. After I rinse, I put a dime-to-quarter sized dollop of the Suave Coconut in as a leave-in.

I towel dry it and then don't touch it as it air dries. The curls end up being well defined and soft. My hair used to be dry and gross, but after a few months of this, it's very soft, and my color lasts longer. The tea tree oil works as well as Selsun Blue for my dandruff too.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)

I don't have anything particularly weird, but this conditioning cleanser is wonderful on my hair and just got discontinued in-stores. It's weird I suppose because I've been no-poo for about a year now, and it was decently affordable. Not using shampoo has been a huge and wonderful change.

I have recently ordered the Free & Clear shampoo and conditioner after hearing many amazing things about it. I have normally used selsum blue but lately it hasn’t been working as well, also wanted to try something with less chemicals/less abrasive.

I just used Aphogee for the first time and it was incredible. I too was noticing the insane amount of water my hair was retaining after a shower (went from thick, Asian, deep black hair to silver) and Aphogee really made a huge difference. If it helps at all, there's a small version of it you could try that's about $4.00 at Sally's, though I imagine you'd probably want at least two packets of that for that for how much hair you've got... maybe cheaper to get the big bottle!

Since I started bleaching my hair about six months ago, I haven't touched shampoo unless removing unwanted color or washing out bleach. I personally love Renpure's Coconut Cleansing pudding http://www.amazon.com/Renpure-Coconut-Creme-Cleansing-Pudding/dp/B00JJQ6YVK/ref=sr_1_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1452151279&sr=1-1&keywords=coconut+cleansing+pudding though just washing with conditioner alone might be a close enough equivalent.

Good luck!

I'm pretty sure, I'm lazy and just order everything. For moisture I use NuNaat Silicon mask, for protein I use Aphogee Two Minute treatment and as a leave-in Redken Anti Snap smells and works amazing. I do heat both the treatments. Did you find a silver dye on there that you liked?

I didn't add up costs, but I'm guessing that would be a lot of money. To cut down, you can get just smaller portions of everything and only purple dye for the toner.

Simple seems like it would be better for your hair. Products with lots of 'natural' ingredients have more allergenic potential. You can always use masks and oils with ingredients you know your scalp will tolerate if you need more moisture.

Apple cider vinegar stinks, let’s be honest and there’s no oils in it to moisturize for those of that need/want it. However, I do use it in between shampoo/conditioner because it’s so good for hair. Going sulfate/silicone free really helped me define my wave pattern and make my hair more manageable - check out /r/curlyhair! It might help you to start sleeping on a satin pillowcase, too, as the slippery fabric is less likely to mess up and leach the moisture out of your hair while you sleep. As for styling products, I generally leave in a little bit of my Cantu conditioner and then scrunch in some eco styler gel or Not Your Mother's Beach Babe cream.

What am I doing wrong? 😞

My hair is just a giant greasy mess. I co-wash with the tresemme expert coconut conditioner and did my last cleansing shampoo a few days ago. At first I thought it was the gel making my hair greasy so I switched to the HE toussle me softly mousse. I just took my hair out of my shirt after the first use and its disgusting! Even worse than the gel! Am I using the wrong products? I threw it upside down and tried scrunching it and playing with it but its still so greasy. I'm embarrassed to go to work today. If I leave my hair as is its stringy and gross, if I brush it the grease is gone but I lose my waves and my hair puffs out like a frizzball. I don't understand!! My hair dresser was able to make some amazing waves that lasted almost three days with the Deva Curl line but I can't afford that!! I don't think I'm meant to have nice hair. I already chopped it all off and now I can't even roll it in my sockbun which has been the only style to ever work for me. I regret this so much! 😭
edit: I couldn't stand it. I had to brush it out. It didn't even get rid of all the grease. I'm at a loss. I'm also reading the plooping might be the culprit, and I did have my hair up all night. So many variables...
