I don't have any experience with USB to RCA adapters, but keep in mind that FireWire cards have gotten really cheap. The card I linked to is less than $20 and worked well for me on Windows 7 x64.

u/psimwork · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Literally any PCIe Firewire card will work. This one will do the job.

Edit: you said Amazon. Here ya go.

I am looking to do something similar and if you have an empty PCI riser you can buy something like this and install a NVMe SSD to use as VM storage. So you'd boot from the SD Card, store VM's on this device, set the current raid controller to passthrough mode and then use whatever software raid you want to configure the remaining drives.

Your budget is unrealistic as it get's closer to 1500 since you don't even have a keyboard and you also need a screen.

It seems crazy to me that you want to edit RED in what, a 20 inch tn panel?

There's plenty of potential slots an adapter card could be inserted into. You have 4 PCI-Express 1x slots. This would work: https://www.amazon.com/QNINE-Firewire-Expansion-Controller-Connection/dp/B01NBQX1J6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1536005350&sr=8-3&keywords=IEEE+1394+pcie+1x#customerReviews

The specs listed don't mention compatibility with Windows 8+ but a 5 star review from someone who bought one said it worked perfect in Windows 10, so this should do the trick. It comes with a low profile back plate you can swap out if necessary, if your computer case is of a low-profile size. All you should have to do is shut the computer off, pop this in any 1x slot, fire it back up and the OS will likely find and install drivers for it automatically. Then it's just a matter of finding software that can handle the capture/recording of video from the camera.

It's the difference between analog and digital. There is literally 0 quality difference between what you see on the camera's screen and what comes out of the FireWire port. It's exactly the same. What comes out of the RCA ports is analog waveforms, not digital 1's and 0's, so the quality can vary based on the quality of the camera's circuits and the cable you're using.

If you have a PC tower, you can get a FireWire PCI card for $20. If you have a laptop with an ExpressCard slot, you can get an adapter for $20.

If you don't have an ExpressCard slot or a PCI slot, send the tapes and a drive to me and I'll use my HVX200 to transfer them.

So you think an ExpressCard with FireWire interface wouldn't work?

https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-ExpressCard-FireWire-Adapter-EC1394B2/dp/B000VS6S0W/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1519508329&sr=8-6&keywords=expresscard+firewire#customerReviews

For me the availability of an ExpressCard port and the possibility to connect it to my camera was actually the main reason to go with a Lenovo P-Series workstation, as other laptop manufacturers have completely abandoned the Expresscard port.
Even Dell doesn't seem to carry them over to their last Perfection series laptops...

I actually have the adapter you linked, as I've been using it on a MacBook Pro 2013. But I'm dissatisfied with the current developments of Mac hard- and software and so I decided to go to Windows (which has actually been a very rewarding experience so far).
BUT: Would this adapter actually work on a thinkpad? After all they are for Thunderbolt2 (using the DisplayPort-Connector) and not the current Thunderbolt3/USB-C - and I would rather avoid using an unreliable daisy-chain to connect my camera, especially when I'm using it on magazine or ad-campaign photoshoots (apart from the fact that Capture One might not even recognise the camera with such a wonky setup).

No, that card is PCI, it won't fit. I recommend getting a new PCIe one. Here's a suitable one. It even comes with a low profile bracket in case your system is low profile.
