Now before you have a look at all these guides. The best guide in most cases will always be your MANUAL. Some manuals are garbage, but most of them are more than good enough to be able to help figure out most problems.
How to build an Intel 115x socket PC? This is my personal favorite because it goes in depth, but still keeps the video relatively short. It also got great camera work so you are able to follow all the steps very well. I decided to skip the start of the video. The reason being that the video is posted on 17th of May 2013, he gives the rationale of his selected parts at the start. This is a very long time ago, so the parts are very old, so no need to hear this out. But building a PC is still pretty much the same. No drastic changes.
There are a lot of different build guides on the internet, but I really like this one. It's easy to follow.
How to install a 115x CPU? Very simple and easy to follow guide again.
How to install thermal compound? Now, to be clear! Every single heatsink will come with its own thermal compound. Even the intel/AMD stock heatsinks. So there is no need to buy this.
It's only recommended to buy when you either have very bad temperatures or when you want to overclock to the extreme. The temperature difference between the best and the "worst" thermal compound is a couple degrees Celsius.
Be careful though! More is not better! It needs to have enough, but too much will dramatically increase the temperatures of the CPU. Thermal compound helps with the contact of the cooler + the CPU. The CPU + heatsink both have microscopically small gaps, which the thermal compound fills up to let the heat get too the heatsink.
How to install RAM? It's very simple these days. For DDR4 it's pretty much the same.
How to install Windows 8(.1) or 10 from an USB drive? You have to download "media creation tool" which is located at the bottom of the page (blue button). Run that program with a 4GB+ USB flash drive plugged into a PC. Then follow the simple steps and the program will make the USB drive bootable. After that all you have to do is build the PC and boot from that USB drive to install Windows.
How to set up your SSD & HDD? This video is another older video, but it works pretty much the same in Win 8/10. He does talk about a few things that aren't very important, but it's good to know.
* How to use Ninite? This video explains it very well, as well as their recommendations. For security I advise to only get Avira (if you don't mind to get an add every day; if you do mind - just use Microsoft Defender) & Malwarebytes. If you want to pay for an anti-virus; Webroot! Light weight; very high detection rate.

CPU: Intel's 4790K @ 4GHz. The fastest processor on the 1150 socket. Will fare excellently on both games and apps.
CPU Cooler A CLC as you wanted. H100i and H105 don't perform that differently.
Motherboard Asus high end Z97-pro. Features AC wifi, all quality sub-components. This with the CPU is a bundle from microcenter.
The motherboard selection was predetermined I am afraid, since the budget called for dual graphics and you wanted both a firewire and wifi card. Thus a Z97 /w AC wifi was needed. It's a great motherboard but you might not like the gold accents
RAM 16GB of fast memory. Black.
Storage 500GB of SSD and 3TB disk. No need to get two separate 1 TB mechanical disks, you can partition the 3TB in two parts easily. 500GB SSD should be more than enough to store your O/S, games and apps.
Graphics Dual 970's will perform great at whatever you throw at them.
Case I have the CM Storm trooper, which is the black version of the stryker you like. While it's a good case, the price point isn't that good to be honest. The enthoo pro I've selected (again white) has more features, space and is cheaper.
PSU 750W of good power from EVGA. Gold rating and modular.
O/S Windows 8.1
Monitors Instead of dual 1080p monitors, I've opted for a 27" 2560x1440 and a smaller 22 1920x1080. Both IPS. If you care, for the same amount of money you can grab 3x 1080p monitors for surround (3x Acer H236HLbid if you want suggestions, they have a thin bezel and IPS panel).
Keyboard Before grabbing this, make sure that you like the switches. This one has MX Blue. Either get a tester, or head into a store with mechs on display to test one with the same switches. Anyway, this keyboard is at a great price, it's not a "gaming" one with aggressive colors and plastic crap left and right.
Mouse A mouse with the Avago ADNS-S3888 sensor = great. Though Razer isn't a brand I especially like, this mouse + sensor is nice.
Firewire ieee 1394b as you wanted. It's pcie 1x, you will put it into the first pcie 1x slot of the motherboard, above the 1st graphics card

I may come back and edit this if I mess something up, but I'll try to be as granular as possible and give links because I sure wish I would have had someone help me when I was building this. I will say this, I looked for these items over time and waited until I found good deals.

However, I have built many PC's and this is the best case I've ever used. All of your cables are hidden, so you have a very clean build with very easy access.
Proc: i7 4790K - I got this on sale for $279. Although I don't need to, I can very easily use the ASRock to overclock to 4.5 ghz straight from the OS.
Video: EVGA GTX 760 SC (I got this at Microcenter for $230.00) - As mentioned, I run three 1900x1200 montors with this. For games - I can run anything (to date) at 1900x1200 on ultra when the Proc os overclocked, unless it is just coded crappy. Lately I'be been playing ESO and Wildstar, but I've also done Bioshock Infinite and The Vanashing of Ethan Carter (beautiful game) as well.
Ram: Crucial Ballistix Elite 16gb - See my comment below on ram.
Motherboard: ASRock z97 Motherboard - Believe it or not, I got this for $86 at Microcenter.

Power Supply: Corsair HX850 - This might be overkill. I got this because I game some on this system and figured I would add another GTX 760 at some point. Also, not sure you need the HX. You might be able to go with a lower end PSU.
Video Monitors: Two of these are Lenova which I already had and are not included in the build price. The other, I just got and it beats the Lenovos significantly. It is an ASUS PA248Q 24-Inch LED-Lit IPS Professional Graphics Monitor. I use these large monitors because my eyes are bad from years of IT work, staring into monitors. Imagine that. This would be overkill for many as they take up a lot of space.
HD1: Crucial MX100 512 gb SSD. Everybody gets Samsung, and even I have one in my purchased gaming rig. However, before you do that, read this review from Tom's Hardware on the MX100. I'm completely sold on this SSD. I got this for $180 on a Newegg sale.
HD2: [Seagate 3tb 7200](Seagate Desktop 3 TB HDD SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 7200 RPM 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST3000DM001) - It is a platter HD I put my sessions on, nothing more. I've never seen a slow down.

I had to look at the specs for the T540p but they are essentially the same as my W540 except the W540 and I've not had any problems with Ubuntu in the 2-3 years I've owned mine. I did make sure my BIOS was updated as it could be and I turned of UEFI and just went with Legacy boot.
I have beefed mine up a bit with 32GB ram and 2 - 500GB SSD (took out my cd drive & put a drive carrier in it to hold the 2nd ssd).
Just FYI ... but one really useful & nifty thing I added also (besides a DOCK) was a SONNET Tempo SATA Pro ExpressCard/34.
The T540 has an expresscard/34 slot (see - http://www3.lenovo.com/za/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/T540p/p/22TP2TT540P) like my W540. On the W540... in the left side-front there was a little door that comes off that exposes the ExpressCard slot on the W540.

I bought a BlackX eSATA external drive enclosure (like a toaster) which I can plug either 2 1/2 inch or 3 1/2 inch HDs or even another SSD... That has really been money well spent as my laptop has virtually unlimited storage now without having to replace internal drives.

Ok. for video editing the most money should mostly be put in the CPU. This build has a very good CPU and a good amount of ram. It has a Gpu that could be downgraded but It can help for rendering a little bit. The keyboard and mouse are not great but that is not an issue. Upgrade l8er. it has a boot ssd and a mass storage harddrive. having a boot ssd is the best upgrade ive ever made to my pc. You could even add a footage ssd l8er for faster editing. You're obviously experienced in building systems and it looks good to me. I won't nitpick brands or whatever.
About the FW card... After doing extensive research for an audio producer friend, the only card I found worth purchasing is a Sonnet Allegro FireWire 800 PCIe Card. It works natively without extra drivers and actually does have the power to handle multiple devices connected to it at once. Most other cards will not do that.
Thet GTX 980 will not work OOB. You'll need to install Nvidia's official web driver package to allow full usability of the card. If you don't need that much graphics power, stick with a 770 or 780 as they do work OOB.
The motherboard should be fairly simple to get working. Googling shows that lots of people have used this board with good results and Thunderbolt working.

With this $15 Firewire card fits nicely into your $800 USD budget. I'd look into downgrading the GPU and maybe PSU (but be careful!) if you need to decrease the price to include a monitor, peripherals, etc.

That was very... "entertaining" read. Sadly I already had Legacy USB disabled in UEFI setup. I am definitely going to check the mentioned usb mailing list later.
The thread also references it being used on a laptop, which throws in a sizable chunk of power management quirks and BIOS hacks, on top of it being ExpressCard device. I have PCIe x1 desktop card, but by pure luck I have same ExpressCard controller. I'll grab some spare SSD and drop Linux on my laptop later to see if issue exists there.

I am very, very close to abandoning this device altogether. But... you mentioned libvirtd and vfio, which happens to be my use case too, and yours works. Would you mind sharing some details? Whether the guest is linux or Windows, or does the hotplug works? In my case, the guest is also Linux, which just escalates the issue one level deeper, since power cycling the machine is a lot of hassle already.
You also dropped another gem in form of Fresco Logic - I think I recognize this company from its USB to VGA adapters, but you say they also make USB controller chips? I believe I have seen only VIA and Renesas solutions before (there's Intel too, but their design is internally based on Renesas one) What are your experiences with these?

edit4: The ExpressCard behaves like a drunken madman, even in Windows. Like depending when I insert it to the system, it gets detected or not, throws PCIe errors or not, detects devices or not, but even if it works, it overheats quickly (i.e. when copying to USB SSD) and shuts down, disappearing until next power cycle. (including removing battery). I gave up trying to check it under Linux.
It's as easy as looking at Focusrite's website for supported chipsets and finding a card with one they support.
I've played this game before, it really isn't that bad. There's even a bunch of positive reviews on Amazon from people using that FireWire card with the Saffire Pro 40.

I wouldn't bother with "official" Linux support. There are only a few manufacturers of USB3 host controllers and the drivers for all of them are in the modern kernel. Most of the USB card manufacturers (especially the generic China ones) don't list Linux compatibility but the cards usually work just fine.
Before the self-powered cards were available, I had a USB3 card in my Poweredge with a self-made Molex splitter/extension off the DVD drive's power connector.
The selections of self-powered USB 3.0 cards (as opposed to 3.1) is a lot larger.
Will something like this cheap generic card work for your purpose or do you actually need 10Gbps?

So I managed to get this one to show up, but I have trouble getting it to recognize anything I plug in.
From my research, I found that switching to legacy helped alot of people.
Upon trying to install legacy drivers, I get a serious freeze followed by bsod every time.
The product I intend to use recommends TI chipset, so my plan was to buy one that had TI, which would concern me if this one had it and doesn't work.
What are my options here? Would win 10 fix this? How about a newer pci card like this one?

Hi there! This is the hub I have. It's Renesas based, doesn't require extra power, and is much cheaper relative to other cards out there, which use the same platform.
It will show up as a PCI-e USB controller, and you passthrough the whole thing at once, like you would a GPU or any other similar device. Doesn't need drivers on Linux or Windows, but does not have any MacOS support, if you need that.

Installed tonight, booted into Win7 first. Immediately recognized and installed drivers automagically.
Then booted into Mavericks with external FW800 drive attached, it popped right up on my Mac desktop.
Also, my original external iSight cam (FW400) plugged right in and worked in iMessage perfectly.

Couldn't you do that and not get another machine?

DACs are digital analog converters. They are basically really fancy sound cards that are good for recording. Low noise floor so you can turn them up really loud before you ever hear any hissing. This is essential for recording any outboard gear. It also will have proper outputs for studio speakers aka reference monitors. I don't record any instruments and work 100% in the box so I use a 2output for my speakers. This is what I use as a DAC to make electronic music.

Not only should it be a TI chip, but it should also not be a "combo card" that has both 400 and 800. Focusrite interfaces in particular have issues with combo cards.

The reason for the graphics card is because it supports up to 4 monitors. I know most studios will have 2 monitors at the desk and then another in the room sometimes if they do ADR for films. As for the SSD, pick whatever you like. There's no reason you should blindly purchase a 250GB simply because it's on my list. If you want a 500GB SSD, go and get one. I'm just showing you an approximation of what's tested and works. It has the smaller firewire port which is exactly that I currently use on my Thinkpad.
As for speed I tried to do some calculations. I am transferring a mini DV tape which has 12 Gb of footage in about 1 hour. If I calculate correctly (1210248/3600) then this means that the speed is roughly 27Mbs and so 400 Mbps would be more than enough.

h110 is the baseline of features, after that comes b150, h170 and the one with the most is z170 (memory and cpu overclocking if you own a 6600k/6700k).

Buy a 3.0 -> 2.0 adapter or if your motherboard has expansion slots, buy a 3.0 add-on card like this.
I would urge you to go with the latter if you have the space. The x1 card will work in an x16 slot.

edit: also if you want to stick to wired why not get a pcie card with extra usb slots so you don't need to use a hub?
So I bought this PCIE USB expansion card and installed it yesterday. When I first tried to boot my PC afterwards, it would turn on, all LEDs and everything, then my PSU would immediately make a click noise, then it would shut down. So I took the card back out, then tried to boot and it worked as normal. Reinstalled it, and it booted as normal once again like nothing happened. Any idea why it was having trouble booting originally? I'm new to these expansion cards so I wanted to make sure there wasn't something about them I should know about regarding power or if this was just one of those weird random things that happen every so often.

Sorry for the late update. My server was actually configured with dual 570W PSUs, and I did confirm the P2000 worked in this configuration flawlessly, up until I added a four-port USB 3.0 card to the last PCIe slot I had.
After adding the USB 3.0 the server complained that not enough power was available, and under clocked my CPUs to ~1.6GHz. That's when I upgraded to the 870W PSUs, which haven't given me any issues (other than a bump in my power bill).
Otherwise, I've upgraded this to 96GB of RAM with 2x870W PSUs. As mentioned, I added a USB 3.0 card which pulls all of its power from the PCIe bus. I realized that not having a working battery in my H700 severely reduces its performance, so that's in the mail right now.
I'm doing a lot more work that requires a mid-range graphics card, and the P2000 has been nothing but reliable in this configuration. Highly recommended!

It has given me no issues at all on Windows 8.1 and 10 connected to a 003 console/interface and a Glyph external drive both running Pro-Tools 11 and 12 and with the 003 acting as the system sound card.
Just don't use the drivers on the disk that come with it. Stick with whatever your computer automatically installs.

As far as splicing i used the cheapest cellotape available in the store...i use my bare hands with no gloves...just watch the video i posted on where to apply the tape when joining broken tapes..
In my case i was digitizing a VHC-C tape and the cassete player chew the tape...i had to open the tape as shown in video and fix it
I'm glad you haven't had any issues. I have one unit connected to the computer with this TI card I installed last year. The other unit is chained to the primary unit by optical cable. The secondary unit is set as the clock at 44.1 kHz, the primary unit is set to sync via ADAT (all done through Saffire MixControl).
There are two modes of failure: when a project or application (Reaper or Adobe Premiere in my case) opens at any sample rate other than 44.1 kHz, the units stop making noise. This can usually, but not always, be corrected by setting the program to use 44.1 and allowing the program to resample from higher sample rates.
The second is more elusive. If either of the units loses power while the computer is turned on the default Windows audio driver steps in, as expected, but when the units are powered back on Windows doesn't allow the units to make noise even if the Focusrite drivers are selected as primary. If I switch back to the Windows audio driver, I can make noise through the built in headphone jack, but no amount of toggling will bring noise back through the Pro 40s. I don't know exactly how to fix this, but it's some combination of turning the units off, turning the computer off, turning the units on, turning the computer back on one at a time, and crossing my fingers that this will be the time it works.
Barring these two small issues I've got no complaints about the units.
