Lots of great advice on here! Congrats on your new house! I fully support living with an S.O. to get a feel for your chemistry as housemates. Things I always found helpful that nobody else has mentioned yet:

  • ironing board and iron. We have one that goes over the back of the door.
  • A really decent vacuum cleaner, especially if you have carpeting. If you can swing it, get a new one that's highly rated. My first 8 years living in various places with S.O.s and roommates I went through 8-10 $40 walmart vacuum cleaners that barely did any good. When we bought our precious baby shark I was astonished as how well it does its damned job!
  • a dustbuster
  • Lamps. Overhead lighting can get really tiresome, and there's nothing that makes a space cozier than the right kind of lighting. We hit up goodwills and thrift stores and got some decent lamps for our space.
  • Somewhere for guests (and you) to store shoes and coats. Your cleaning will be easier if you take off your shoes at the door, and ask guests to do so as well. We have a cubby bin.
  • Don't overlook the merits of things that have multiple uses. Extra storage is no laughing matter. If you get a couch, consider a futon (so you have a place for guests to sleep).
  • Window treatments can go a VERY long way towards making a space feel complete and homey.
  • Splurge on your bedding. Seriously. Buy the nicest mattress, pillows, sheets and pillowcases you can afford. Getting a great night's sleep and looking forward to bed time is a great way to get settled in, and also make intimate snuggle time much nicer.

Enjoy your new home and space! Don't forget to get artwork or pictures on the walls ASAP so the space feels less overwhelming. Get organizational bins and boxes/tubs to put things that don't have a home yet, and keep your space less cluttered. If you cook, get a crockpot! Enjoy building your space together.

I invested in a Rowenta ironing board a number of years ago and love it. Expensive? Yes. But quality. My earlier boards from Target were light and a bit tippy. The Rowenta board is hefty - reminds me of my mother's board. The board itself is a bit wider than others, but could always be wider. With my earlier boards I would not have made/purchased a wider ironing surface to stick on top due to stability concerns. Not a concern I have with this board.

I do not like the metal attachment to the back of the board (iron rest?) as the cord of my iron often gets pinched in between the metal rest and the board itself. Looking at the closest thing I could find to my board on amazon, it looks like the newer models would not have this problem (the metal iron rest on mine is the same width as the board).

You could put this one into a drawer (it's available on Amazon for $150 but the manufacturer's website has better photos): http://www.rev-a-shelf.com/p-7-drawer-accessories-fold-out-ironing-board-for-bathroomvanity.aspx

Or this one would mount to a vertical piece of wood, IE, the back of a wardrobe: https://www.amazon.com/Hafele-America-568-66-700-Wall-Mounted-Ironing/dp/B001DSY7YI?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

I think if you wanted to mount it in a wardrobe, buying it separate and choosing it would be most affordable. I don't see any with one that comes included.

You're a big girl now! For srs. I'm also a nurse, for srs.

You need a good ironing board, yo.

u/BeatArmy99 · 5 pointsr/malefashionadvice

What, you don't have a desk to put something like this on?

Also, do you wear your entire wardrobe everyday?

Black and Decker D2030 and Wide ironing board like this one. look into the product reviews for the B&D and for the price it beats out most of the competition.

Do you mean the wire hinged piece? It looks like it is meant to keep your cord lifted and out of the way.

Nope, I already checked myself and that part, according to amazon is a hanger bar for hanging freshly ironed shirts.
Pics in use in the link.

You can find small ironing boards that hang off doors, and they fold up...you might have to customize the top a little, but it's not that hard to do.

EDIT: pic of one here

We use one by Brabantia. It's very sturdy. While we've only had it three years, there's a noticeable difference in build quality between it and most others we've used.

You can get a Tabletop Ironing Board that is small enough to use just about anywhere. I have one that fits on my computer desk when I can't get to the bigger board or if my roommate is using it.

u/sparks1990 · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

It's definitely compact

I've had this one for over a year now and I haven't had any problems. Although, I'm not really sure what problems could possibly arise?

u/vrjain · 1 pointr/translator

Hey @Duncy_Kong - it is 5mm polyester felt padding that is stuck to the fabric. This allows the surface to be smoother while ironing.

Iron + an ironing board

Here's a good cheap combo. Don't fill the iron with water, there's a lot of negative reviews saying it has a leaking issue. Buy a separate spray bottle and fill that with water.

No, no... it's what they make aluminum ironing boards out of.

u/TheSkookumchuck · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I just bought This and This. Downside on the board is that it's more of a space-saver idea.

u are wrong, 1.6LPM will buy this not 3k one..
