I have no dogs in this fight, nothing against jews. I am atheist and simply have a profound interest in history. I, too had strong opinions and always thought Germany as being the trouble-makers but if you want to settle an argument between friends, you need to look at both sides of the story. Our culture only gets one side ( the victors write history ) and people in our culture are all conditioned to accept everything they are taught as the ultimate, unquestionable truth. I could not believe, at first when I read here and there that the Zionist movement had collaborated extensively with Hitler. This fact is very well documented and confirmed by many historians.

I am very much anti-war and do not want to glorify Hitler, just trying to point out that our side of the story is filled to the brim with lies and propaganda. These lies are taught in schools, the magical "6 millions jews were killed" is a fairy tale, still taught as truth.

This sub, + 4-5 years of digging into history books ( many of these banned ), showed me that our side was just as guilty of war crimes and massacres as the Germans were. I highly recommend you look into the horrific Dresden bombing.

This thread is a perfect example of why our history books are filled with lies: the truth is buried, by the most powerful political party on earth.

Like I said friend, massive downvotes on threads like this, without any valid rebuttal really means "OH SHIT QUICK BURY THIS BEFORE TOO MANY PEOPLE THINK ON IT".

Please read Norman Finkelstein's book Holocaust Industry!!! He is the most prominent living scholar on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

If you're interested in reading more, East West Street by Philippe Sands is quite good. It focuses on Lviv, Hersch Lauterpacht and Raphael Lemkin -- the lawyers who established the concepts of crimes against humanity and genocide respectively -- who both came from Lviv, and Hans Frank -- Nazi governor-general of occupied Poland which included Lviv. The book is fairly long but very interesting, especially if you're interested in the international law side of things.

You should read War and Genocide by Doris Bergen. It's about the Holocaust, but it explains how war and genocide often goes hand in hand, as was also true in the 90s.

I recommend The Drowned And the Saved by Primo Levi.

It's a fairly excellent examination of how and why people in the camps behaved they way they did, among many other things. I recommend it as a companion to his more famous memoir, Survival in Auschwitz.

These 3 books I recommend: Jasenovac - Auschwitz of the Balkans by Gideon Greif, The Yugoslav Auschwitz and the Vatican by Vladimir Dedijer, Jasenovac and the Holocaust in Yugoslavia by Barry M. Lituchy and 44 Months in Jasenovac by Egon Berger.

Although I think that you could just Google "Jasenovac concentration camp" and "Sisak children's concentration camp"(the only concentration camp during WW2 dedicated specifically for children) and read some articles about that. I also think that even Wikipedia pages for these two are sufficient enough and you don't have to spend money on books.

They were being transferred from Bergen-Belsen. The story is detailed in A Train Near Madgeburg. Matthew Rozell, a high school teacher in NY state, came upon the story when interviewing a WWII veteran (as an afterthought) as part of a school project. After posting it online, survivors and veteran liberators ended up getting back in touch and having multiple reunions. It's quite powerful. There's actually an interesting book I read for my Holocaust History and Memory course. It's called Selling the Holocaust.

It discusses how people remember the Holocaust and how it's packaged to fit into the culture of the nation. For instance, there's an entire section of how the Holocaust Museum in DC is tailored to an American audience because it's such a foreign concept despite how widespread the knowledge of it is.

But one of the longest sections is how Anne's father censored the original diary to fit into this idealized innocent girl's ordeals at the hands of the evil Nazi empire.

After looking around for a bit I found this website.

The German public was told that the Jews and other undesirables were being resettled.

This article from the times of Israel about a Nazi-era German diary that is used to judge what an “ordinary” German may know.

I also found something on a Q&A website that cites research done by Peter Longerich that suggests ordinary Germans knew quite a bit about what was going on. I couldn’t find his research anywhere though but I think it might be in this book.

It is fairly safe to assume that the German populace knew quite a lot about the supposed ‘resettlement’ of Jewish people and other ‘undesirable’ peoples but whether or not they knew people were being exterminated en masse might still be up for debate I don’t know.

Edit: I should probably say that I’m not arguing that the Germans knew everything, just trying to show that they at least knew something was up beyond the “resettlement” narrative of the government.

The military, Nazi's, gangs, Soviets, Strait Edgers, sports fans (i.e. that tragic incident involving Dodgers fans and the soccer riots after every other English footbal match), Stanford prison experiment, the other experiment where researchers told subjects to admister what they thought lethal electric shocks and they did, large corporations, highschool cliques, etc.

Numerous books have been written on this question. It is an interesting and important question, to be sure. I don't think there is a simple answer.
