I tested out several and settled on the Cliff Keen fusion headgear https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JUS3T4Q They are a nice balance between good ear protection and a soft outer layer which is helpful for your teammates.
I also tried, and still have, the Cliff Keen Tornado, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KEFWUE/ . Excellent protection, but the hard outer shell sticks out far and is somewhat like a cheese grater on your partner. Wrestling great, bjj not so much.
I also bought and immediately returned the matman, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006SBMZ9Y/ . The attached chin strap was a deal breaker. Not only did it not fit my big melon the attached chin strap means if it breaks it's tough to replace.
I have no problems hearing instruction or my partner when wearing them, but they are a PIA to wear and this is coming from someone who wrestled for many years. I put them on after warm ups or sometimes not until sparring depending on what we are working on. They have kept my cauliflower ear from coming back over the past year.
Best of luck.
i haven't worn a bunch of different ones, but i have this and it's pretty sweet. lightweight, great field of vision, and really doesn't move once you strap 'er in.
wear headgear man. your future self will thank you.
Besides jewelry material being a common cause for problems (I would advice implant grade materials and definitely not acrylic) and poor placement. Sleeping on piercings can definitely cause havoc. Even more so if you don’t downsize jewelry in a timely matter. One of the problems it can cause is tilting the angle it was originally pierced at to the point of it becoming impossible to heal.
For our teen, a travel pillow didn’t work either. We ended up doing some DIY, to make something like this There’s wrestling head gear that would work as well. It looks ridiculous, but it works great. Because not sleeping on piercings will have a major positive impact on the healing process.
After trying and buying a number of them, I'd strongly recommend these
Cliff Keen Fusion Headgear in Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JUS3T4Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fkfLBbG0MQEG0
They breathe as well as any others (not great but better than any others I tried). They don't hurt you or your partner but are still stiff enough and large enough to protect your ears. They don't come off and are adjustable to a big (or smaller ) head (my head is very big).
After getting a bad cauliflower ear forming, going to the doc for a draining and a couple of stitches to hold some cotton rolls for pressure in place, I had to be off the mats for 2-3w. Then I wore the protection linked above. Now I don't always wear them any more or after months of being better. I wear them if I feel any discomfort in my ears or redness, and I wear them for tournaments.
Hope this helps.
I was googling Taekwondo headgear and stumbled across this: https://www.amazon.com/Pro-Force-Lightning-Sparring-Headgear/dp/B005E1B0U4/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=taekwondo+headgear&qid=1557274656&s=gateway&sr=8-5.

Your best bet is either Taekwondo headgear or wrestling headgear.

Love the dedication though :D
I used this a bit and thought it was the best headgear at the gym: http://amzn.to/2qCkmRA It is not entirely "open face" as it has the cheek protection, but it felt good on the head. Not too heavy but also adequate padding.
I like this one pretty well. It’s inexpensive, and fits my big head better than my competition headgear.

I have Venum products (their elite series) and they're all very good at impact-reduction.
If you're stretched on budget, their challenger series headgear is not bad, good all-around protection, but if you can spring for the Elite series, do so.
headgear
shinguards
Unfortunately, I do not have any experience with their MMA styled gloves, but given the quality of the rest of their gear, I would imagine they would be good.
My sparring partner (boxing/muay thai) has Hayabusa gear, and says it is just as good, if not better. Hayabusa, however, is more pricey on most of their gear.
I bought a title competition headgear with cheeks for ammy comps. Is it a good piece of headgear? It is USA boxing approved.

Yeah, I'm looking for it to be a gateway to HEMA for my kids and their friends.

Do you have any links to the Russian karate helmet? I've fround the Star brand for the chest protector, but the closest helmet I can find is something like this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3D45VA/ - which is probably sufficient.
Heres a link to a cap, I got this to hold back my hair bc its hella long n it stays on well enough. Covers the ears completely
Gold BJJ Headgear for Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, and MMA - Cauliflower Ear Protection: One Size Fits All, Reinforced Velcro Chin Strap - Bonus Mouthguard Included! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXP823Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_l5TOCbTB0Y72K
I have had experience with both.
I wore a couple from Title and Ultimatum boxing when I had braces. They did protect my mouth better, but the facebar limits visibility quite a bit. Also, I feel like I was hit on the nose (mine is big enough to stick out of the headgear) more often.
Another thing I have noticed is that when sparring some people with face bars will ignore being hit in the face, because it does not hurt enough, leading to all kinds of problems.
I have since switched to an open face headgear from Ultimatum, and I am not going back to the face bar version. Its a lot lighter and offers a much smaller hitbox for the opponent to aim at. It also gives you better visibility.
Things like this seem to cover the face fairly well.
In the same boat. Started getting repeat puff ups after about a year of training. I get caught and push through a lot of triangles and big-man pass a lot. But there are more experienced people in my gym who have a similar style and not a scratch. Some people are just more prone to it.
Due to my career, and also my wife's opinion on the matter, I picked up these and they have been great. Comfy, easy to clean, zero ear issues. The only downside is hearing is a bit compromised but, meh.
Looking to buy headgear. Thinking either Twins or Fairtex. Willing to pay the difference between them for the quality (sadly can't afford to go winning/cleto reyes.. that would be a dream come true). Which one is the best quality? I'm thinking Fairtex is as that's what a store manager for the only boxing store in Paris has told me but i dont know.. Also what bothers me about fairtex is their damn logo is annoying lol (Obviously if its better quality i'll still buy it but hey just a pet peeve)
Twins: https://www.amazon.com/Twins-Special-Head-Gear-Large/dp/B0088LNG7C/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1537093812&sr=1-1&keywords=twins+headgear
Fairtex: https://www.amazon.com/Fairtex-Headgear-Sparring-Diagonal-Kickboxing/dp/B00KR9CYKI/ref=sr_1_4?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1537093812&sr=1-4&keywords=twins%2Bheadgear&th=1

Any good headgear recommendations? Preferably ones that allow me to see and aren't too big. I bought the Ring to Cage full face headgear a while back and I hate them. They make my head a huge target and also make bobbing and weaving much more difficult. I'd recommend against them
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009YMYW0Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've had one identical to the one /u/scpDZA suggested, but didn't work too well for me.
Bought a Cliff Keen and even though it's more expensive, it was worth every penny. Never had a problem with cauli anymore.
Depends what you are looking for.
I personally use the Air Max by Fight Gear for sparring, and its great head gear.
Someone else posted saying that Winning is the gold standard, and they are correct, however Winning is based out of Japan and their American counterpart is Fighting. Their headgear is a "face saver" type, which means you never get hit in the nose, but the headgear makes it tough to tuck your chin and can instill bad habits about not caring about getting hit. That being said, if you get a broken nose you NEED one of those head gears if you need to spar. I am sure the Fighting one is good, but I have these for my gym, which are just as good.

I have this and it works for me. I was gonna go with a facesaver also but visibility was a concern. I have an extra for sale also after Amazon screwed up my order in a Medium, if you're interested PM me.
I have this Rival headgear. It's very light weight and the padding is not as thick as other headgears. I never really use it tho. Only for hard boxing only sparring. I don't like headgear in general but if you want to start competing, you have to get used to it because many ammy orgs and local smokers will make you wear headgear.
I've been using these recently: https://www.amazon.com/Headgear-Grappling-Guard-Sparring-Helmet/dp/B07M8NKZVV/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=roar+headgear&qid=1554078218&s=gateway&sr=8-3.
But a more expensive version I was also looking at was: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BF2ZD5N/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B07BF2ZD5N&pd_rd_w=lU6q5&pf_rd_p=733540df-430d-45cd-9525-21bc15b0e6cc&pd_rd_wg=y9TDT&pf_rd_r=713BQJFCA15MCVJN40G0&pd_rd_r=8aad8fde-5414-11e9-abc6-4338a415eec6
