Seems like there are some less penisy ones. Clever toy though.

It looks like that yellow triangle is removable, so maybe it's reversible and the answers for multiplication are on the back of it?

Edit: Looks like that's what it is

u/LittleMissChriss · 3 pointsr/tipofmytongue

It doesn't fit all of your criteria, but several of your bullet points bring these educational toys to mind :) https://www.amazon.com/Twist-Shout-Multiplication-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B00005BYQ2

I don't know about a calculator, but he might have been talking about these:

Learning wrap ups

You use them to learn multiplication tables by wrapping the string around and around from question to answer. The back of them has lines that show where the string should be if you got it right.

The only other one it might be (again, not really a calculator) acts more like a slide ruler, but with string. But it doesn't do anything a normal slide ruler can't do, and it also can't be used as a ruler:

You could get them this really cheap pre-built. You'd save a lot of money going this route!

u/tactics · 2 pointsr/soroban

Even low-end soroban suit my needs (and I'm pretty picky about having good tools). I think I have a few that are around this quality: https://www.amazon.com/Flexzion-Arithmetic-Calculating-Oriental-Calculator/dp/B018SA829E

The only bad experience I've had is with some of the wooden abacuses being low quality and splintering on the back. For a younger child, I might just want to go plastic.

To teach younger kids, I recommend the SAI Speed Academy's series: https://www.amazon.com/Abacus-Mind-Math-Instruction-Level/dp/1941589006

I don't know about other bases and the soroban, though. Sorry!

It's part of a set of "relational geosolids". They're teaching aids for geometry. You pour water or sand or whatever into them to demonstrate the volume of shapes, or just use them as visual aids.

Looks like part of this set here (The Q&A says they're about 6in tall, but check out the second picture for scale).

Edit: I haven't been able to find them sold individually, but apparently Learning Resources's customer service team can arrange replacement parts (last post got deleted for link to manufacturer's facebook page). Might be worth a shot: 1-800-333-8281 (Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:30pm CST)

Are you looking for a manual scoreboard? Or something like this?

u/CunningAllusionment · 4 pointsr/mathriddles

No. I'm a high school math teacher and was messing around with Cuisenaire Rods with a student, when we came up with this question. We've been messing around with it for a month, and found a variety of patterns, but none of them quite work. It's been interesting.

We've organized the pattern in a few ways that reveals different behavior and we've come up with sort of logical explanations for why the patterns behave that way, but that's all we've got.

Today I was noticing that it's the sum(i=1 to N)(of how many ways you can make i groups out of N identical objects.)

So is this like porn to you?

I have a bin of these multicolored cubes. I model whatever looks cool on the plane, and assign ordinance with cubes. Red is Skystrike missiles, black is something else etc. They’re small enough to sit on the base too

We mentioned this in an episode of our podcast, I was using these colored cubes in lieu of tokens. Each color represented something different. They're fairly cheap and you can use them as stand-ins for pretty much any game, in case you ever lose a piece, or as caltrops in the event of a home invasion.

Before I had miniatures, I used [Centimeter Cubes] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0799SW2SL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Td14AbYG5CKXM)

I think you're thinking of Translucent color counting chips

u/Slurmsmackenzie8 · 3 pointsr/BoardgameDesign

These cubes are reasonably priced and all you need for early to mid stage prototypes.
