When my beard is thick, I have a homemade exfoliant that is 1 part coffee grounds and 16-24 parts coconut oil. I only use it if I go 1 or 2 days without shaving. Actually, most exfoliants are being outlawed here because the particles end up being ingested by the aquatic wildlife. Not only are plastic microbeads being outlawed but so are walnut shells. Since my water eventually drains into a Great Lake, I even wonder if it is ethical for me to use my homemade concoction.

I shave with Neutorgena's Men's Skin Clearing Shave Cream and it does wonders to leave a nice oil film on my face. I also use their after shave balm on my entire face and it does well.

For my body, Garnier Essentials has a Coconut Oil hair conditioner that I use on the hair and then rub on my body. It does a nice job of moisturizing my body. As for protecting my face from wind burns, I can't beat petroleum jelly. I have small tubes of it that I are stored in various outdoors bags and strategic places such as my sports officiating bag, hunting gear, glove compartment, and tool cabinet in the garage.

In the summer, I'm a fanatic about sunscreen, especially for my thin spot on the top of my head. I'll spray sunscreen there and make sure that I hit the ears and neck.

I'm lucky because I don't have a lot of skin problems and I think the fact that I have lots of body hair helps me to retain oils. I've been able to keep it simple and get by with a basic skin care routine.

This razor and this shaving gel. I just used the standard blade that they sent with the razor which is in the picture. Like I said I usually don't shave much so I don't have a lot of experience but I'm gonna watch some videos and try to get better with every shave. Thank you for helping.

  1. You're at least ahead of the curve in this day and age with your life.

  2. Worry about the present.

  3. Watch something funny! Seriously. Laughter really is the best medicine.

  4. Door Number One

    Door Number Two

    Door Number Three (quantity 2)

Either of those, I don't care which one.

A few things from my experience.

I've tried one of those shaving cream heaters, like this one. It helped at first, and didn't hurt so much. But the trick is to do it after the shower, use a warm/hot cloth prior, then apply the hot foam. Feels like butter.

Then I tried a hair trimmer, without the guard, and I have a constant 5 oclock show that lasts about 3-5 days. THIS IS THE BEST as it doesn't irritate me at all. I do this before the shower as the cut stubble gets everywhere. This is the best IMO, and doesn't cut me. I then use a smaller BrAun shaver on the beard trimmer side to get a better cut around the chin, and neck. (But the BrAun isn't necessary.)

Not to mention. I took Acutane when I was younger, cleared it up, but man the dry lips sucked. And people say it's related to depression but it's only because a governor's son killed himself, and he was on the same drug. Try a topical cream first. Or some sort of med. It'll help your self esteem as well. It wouldn't hurt going to the dermatologist. They have soaps, creams, and cleansers you could try.

Baby steps, and try many things that work for you. Also, not shaving all the time will definitely help. Go for a month without shaving. IMO it's not the shaving so much, it's the acne. See a doctor.

Clean the inside of the visor really well. Take a small amount of shaving gel and put it on a dry white cloth. Rub the gel into the the inside of the visor until you can't see the gel anymore. This thin layer of soapy material will keep fog from binding to the surface of the visor.

Body shave gel... swimmers use it, safe everywhere. Gilette body is good.

Usually better to use body razor/trimmer (face hair and body hair are different), but a regular one will "get the job done".

I got a personal shaver to get what was left, use with talc (optional)

Lastly, follow with Shaveworks The Cool Fix to reduce irritation/bumps

If you want your hole beight and shiny like a porn star's ass, bumper brite supposedly lightens the hole for a more even/smoothed out skin tone

Source: literally my meet-prep kit when i swam (light competitive). Minus bumper brite, im not sure about that, and idk what the long-term use side effects are, use with caution.

I also had this problem for several years and finally happened onto a combination that seems to work well for me. Quickly regarding the straight razor vs. disposable debate, disposables ARE sharper than a straight razor, but dull quickly because they are not designed to be maintained.

  1. Get an electric razor with a rotary-style blade that you can use IN the shower. As other comments noted, you won't get exactly as close a shave, but it's barely noticeable.
  2. Use a shaving lather that is designed for sensitive skin. I use something by Neutragena.
  3. Get your water hot hot hot and run it over your face for a few seconds. This will open up your pores and help minimize irritation.
  4. Shave, using light pressure and circular motions. My razor has a little dispenser for more sensitive-skin dispensing lotiony stuff, but you could also just apply more lather.
  5. Rinse your face off with COLD water.
  6. Apply an aftershave balm like this both on the day that you shave and the three days afterward (I tend to shave every three days, mostly because I'm lazy, but also to give my skin a rest).

    Good luck!

Basically, you wanna do everything in the shower so it's over the fastest and requires the least amount of cleanup.

Use bodywash with a plastic scrubber. This helps get rid of flaky skin and keeps everything smooth.

Use shampoo, but conditioner doesn't do much if you've got short hair.

Use an acne wash. Look for the orange liquid when you're shopping.

Using a good shave cream means you don't need an aftershave. I swear by this. That bottle will maybe last you half a year.

You can also brush your teeth in the shower, and use a flouride rinse after. Flossing is important, but if you forget or don' have time, flouride will help a lot. Also, flossing BEFORE you brush is better. Any gunk that's not scraped out entirely is loose for when your brush gets back there.

Here's the order of events: floss, turn on water, brush teeth, spit, brush tongue, spit, flouride gargle, spit, water is now hot, rinse everything, shampoo hair, rinse hair, conditioner hair, scrub body, rinse body, rinse hair, rinse face, acne wash face, rinse face, shave cream face, shave, rinse

Also pluck weird extraneous brow hairs, especially ones that grow between your eyebrows, but as needed. And use deodorant, not antiperspirant. Antiperspirant clogs your skin and is overall bad for you.

I switched to TendSkin Air Shave Gel after trying shaving cream, soap, and conditioner and it's helped me so much. A bit pricey but it lasts a really long time and it's worth it. I will not be going back to shaving cream ever again.

Tough call. It depends (imho) how bad it is before you shave again. If the pfb hasn't really had a chance to develop yet then shaving again while it is still short will usually prevent the irritation (assuming it is from ingrown hairs and not a reaction to soap or poor technique). Once the bumps are there however I find it is best to let them resolve before dragging a blade over them. To do that I usually keep my face clean use witch hazel on the irritation and then apply this stuff a couple times a day http://www.amazon.com/Clubman-Club-Mend-Fluid-Ounce/dp/B001AT00MI
