What about an ASUS ROG Strix? Although it is heavier than the macbook (4.9lbs instead of 4.46lbs) it is way more powerful as it has a GTX 1060 and an i7 6700HQ inside. You will have no probably when it comes to 1080p gaming on this laptop, since it has a full desktop GTX 1060 included. However, the battery life maybe an issue and you may need to plug it in often.

If you want a laptop that has a longer battery life, then I would recommend Razer Blade It has the almost same exact spec, and lighter than the ASUS ROG, but it would be more expensive and might be hotter when running games.

u/LonerIM2 · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I wouldn't wait for black friday for this budget, a new laptop with the new GPU is unlikely to drop on Black Friday, and I would recommend this ROG Strix GL502VM because it has a lot of what you need, it comes with 1060 GPU which is as "future prof" as you can get for this budget, and it offers great value as it can run most new games on medium to high settings with high FPs, it also has the other specs to supports it like quad core i7, has more than enough ram for smooth multi tasking, USB type C, advertised 5 hour of battery life with light usage, and light for a gaming laptop at 4.8 lbs and it fits well inside your budget.

u/CrookedStubby15 · 5 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I would go for a laptop with a gtx 1060. The performance increase is very noticeable.

This one is slightly above your budget, but totally worth it IMO.

[Thin and light (for a gaming laptop) with GTX 1060 , i7-6700HQ, 16Gigs of RAM and a free m.2 slot to upgrade later if you want an SSD for $1400] (https://www.amazon.com/Asus-GL702VM-DB71-17-3-Inch-i7-6700HQ-7200RPM/dp/B01KB0WJ1G/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1478456137&sr=1-4&keywords=gtx%2B1060%2Blaptop&th=1)

I'd recommend if don't choose this laptop, at least go for a GTX 10-series (1060, 1070, 1080). They perform FAR better than the 9-series for less money and less power consumption for their performance.

u/Jinh0o · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I guess you can wait for bf, since it isnt far from now. 1500 should get you a pretty decent gaming laptop with the gtx 1060. I recommend the Asus GL series. The one with the 1060 should be around 1300 if I'm not mistaken. It's a slim 15 inch laptop that should be able to run everything you've listed at a very good fps on the highest settings(native 1080p).

If you want something smaller in size for portability, look at the msi 14 inch laptop .

Some of these laptops are already on sale.

My best suggestion would be the Dell Inspiron 7559 for $800 because it has a good mix of power and battery life. You could look into some laptops with new pascal graphics, but all will have very poor battery, rarely lasting over 4 hours. The dell comes with a quad core i7-6700HQ processor, 8gb of ram and a 1TB HDD. It has a GTX 960M graphics card which will work just fine for light and moderate gaming. It has a full 1080p IPS display, a long battery life (advertised up to 10 hours), and a white backlit keyboard.

There is also another RAM slot and another storage slot if you would like to upgrade either in the future.

If you want something that will really future-proof you though, maybe look into the ASUS ROG STRIX for $1250, which has one of the largest batteries of any laptop with a GTX 1060. It's specs include a quad core i7-6700HQ processor, 16gb of ram and a 1TB HDD. It's GTX 1060 graphics card is extremely powerful and will meet any gaming needs you have. Its battery is decent and advertised up to 5 hours.

u/The---Technician · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

That budget could land you an awesome laptop like this Asus ROG Strix GL502VM laptop that has one of the latest and most powerful graphics card, an awesome i7 quad core processor, great 16 GB RAM and a nice storage which I recommend you boost with an SSD later on. This laptop will do an excellent job in running CAD applications and of course, it will play WOW on max settings easily. It also has a great build quality with nice keyboard and a decent display quality. It is also very portable weighing under 5lbs and has a nice support for linux. 3 years ? Based on the power as well as build quality of this laptop, you will get three years out of it easily.

u/FallsZero · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Hi OP I recommend the ROG Asus Strix

1500$ was your limit and the strix is nice.

u/MakesWebsites · 3 pointsr/Ubuntu

My best laptop experience so far has been this from ASUS. I haven't had any issues on Ubuntu and I am using the proprietary drivers.

u/ThatGuyWithTheText · 3 pointsr/laptops

Don't consider buying apple. They no longer priorities their computer brand and it really shows. That being said, for 1200 you should NOT buy any computer that sports a 900 series card. Ram and harddrive space can (typically) be upgraded later. But graphic cards are on for good and you can never upgrade/replace them in laptops.

For 200 more you can pick up this model which includes a 1060 (which will lead to less heat and futureproof you for years to come)

If your budget is stuck at 1200 you can buy a used asus stix and install the ssd yourself. https://www.amazon.com/15-6-inch-G-SYNC-2-6GHz-GL502VM-GeForce/dp/B01KB0WJ1G/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1487958370&sr=1-4&keywords=1060+laptop

If I was looking to get a gaming laptop I'd want one with a GTX 1060, unfortunately you'd be looking at $1399 for the cheapest one, the ASUS GL502VM, it does look pretty good though, with an IPS gsync monitor.
If that's too much I'd lurk Slickdeals for a few days and see if any with the 1060 go on sale.

I've been on a search for a better laptop to replace the one I have the last two days, and this was the best all-around one I found so far, and I'm wondering if anyone here had any serious problems/complaints about it that I should know before purchasing it.

Any help would be appreciated in this.

u/BossRSA · 2 pointsr/buildmeapc

I completely agree with u/elint that you should go ask at r/SuggestALaptop for suggestions from people who know more about laptops than most of us PC builders. However, a good option may be this laptop (there's a 17.3" model if you Grandma prefers screen real estate over portability) that has a G-Sync 1080p screen, 16GB of RAM, an i7, and a GTX 1060, so she can expect to max out any game at 1080p 60fps. You could then add a 240GB SSD like this one, and install the OS and WOW on it.

Hope this helps, and feel free to ask any questions!

u/SaneBRZ · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

> Is it possible to get a laptop with similar build quality to the XPS 15 that also might have a better graphics card?

I don't know. You could take a look at the Asus ROG Strix GL502VM, but I wouldn't say that it's as well build as the XPS 15 from Dell. A lot of plastic and only the display lid is made out of brushed aluminium. It will feel kinda cheap. And if looks definitely like a gaming laptop.

Another alternative would be a Sager NP8151. Looks more conservative, but it's also thicker and heavier.

u/Orangematz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

What about this? Spending more gets you a quad-core i7, GTX 1070 and it is also fairly thin/light.

u/KPalm_The_Wise · 2 pointsr/graphicscard

u/thecolonelofk · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I'm just going to go ahead and link you to r/SuggestALaptop for a better equipped suggestion, but I can give it a shot. That budget might be a little rough.

Autocad is generally single threaded, with some actions requiring more, so you'll be fine with a laptop i5/i7 (dual core without, and with hyperthreading), and won't require a HQ SKU CPU (4 actual cores). RAM is going to be a big consideration, since it's fairly easy to fill up. Autodesk recommends 8, which should be alright, but up to 16 is going to be better. The GPU is definitely worth having, but it doesn't need to be incredible. Something like a GT940M or higher is absolutely fine.

Budget option - $510

13-inch option - $1099

Premium option - $1299

u/malvinvnv · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

So, I'm guessing you want a one-for-all machine for college?

If you want to maximize build quality: XPS 15. The 7300HQ ones will be a good option. It's got long battery life, and a decent GPU to boot. Too bad it's running an SSHD combo. An SSD based system would be much faster

If you want the best performance at the smallest amount of money, your suggestion was already nice, but if possible, I'd recommend stepping down from that NVMe drive and going instead with a bigger SSD if you can. If the customizer doesn't allow for more, this combo is a very solid option for the price already though

If you want to maximize performance, then the Sager would be the best option imo as it's customizable and very easily upgradeable. If you're a bit of a storage freak, this thing can contain 2 M.2 2280 SSDs, with 1 slot capable for NVMe drive, and 2 more HDD/SSD slots in the 2.5" form. Other than that, there's the GL502 from Asus, same performance basically but slimmer since it accomodates only 1 SSD (M.2) and 1 HDD/SSD

If you want the cheapest possible option: HP Pavilion Power 15 At $700 this isn't gonna be wrong. It's cheap, cheaper than the lowest end Dell 7567, but it comes at a price. Build quality won't be as solid as the Dells, but it will have all the features it has. Tbh, I won't go HP unless I am really strapped for cash, or if I'm willing to go big and get the Envy, Spectre, or Omen series.

Alright, budgets aside, the fastest machine would be the Asus and Sager (Tied in first place), Dell Inspiron 7567, and lastly there's the XPS 15 and the HP (both tied in 3rd place).

But it's not so simple. See, considering your workload, you're already fine with a 1050 since you don't exactly run AAA titles anyway. The GPU should have some breathing room for those games but not by a big margin. But there's another thing, you're doing Photoshop, and also you're probably be bringing this to classes as well, so you need some strong battery life.

The XPS fits the bill. Not only it has an accurate, good looking screen, it also boasts a strong battery life. The lower end model would probably still last you 6 hours while the rest of the pack probably will only last for 3 hours and 4 hours tops. Then there's also the size, even though they're all 15 inchers, the XPS is actually slimmer since the screen is nigh-bezelless. If you're still dreaming of the AAA titles, there's a TB3 port for all your eGPU needs (Wait for Akitio or PowerColor to release their take on eGPU enclosures though. Razer's solution is too expensive). If you've saved enough, the XPS actually makes up for a very futureproof system. If you can squeeze $100 more from the budget, I'd recommend aiming for the i7 equipped version since it's gonna last you longer and since you're doing productive work as well, the hyperthreading might see some utilization.

The second recommendation would fall to the Sager. It boasts a more accurate screen than the Asus. Performance-wise it's more powerful than the XPS due to the stronger 1060 GPU inside. This will be apparent in games and in video rendering in Premiere, but not much else otherwise. Build quality on this is pretty solid, but it really lacks battery life. I'm using the stronger brother of the laptop (One with 1070) and I can only get 3 hours at max with the iGPU running. Babying it will give me 4 hours but it stays on standby pretty much half the time. Unless you're going to use the battery as some sort of UPS, the performance of this thing won't shine. It's a bit like a hungry V8 Mustang Cobra. It's fast, yes. But it also guzzles fuel like there's no tomorrow. The XPS on the other hand, is like a nimble BMW M4. It's stylish, probably not as fast but it's certainly much more frugal than the brash American.

u/Unanimous_Anonymity · 1 pointr/GamingLaptops

u/ITman2000 Im kindly providing some corrections. Lenovo Legion Y740 isn't "$599.99", you probably meant "$1,599.99". ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71 is no longer under $1,500 so it cannot qualify for the "Below $1,500" category.

I think your best bet will be something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B01KB0W4R0/ref=olp_tab_refurbished?ie=UTF8&condition=refurbished

Or if you want one thats a bit smaller:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B01KB0WJ1G/ref=olp_tab_all

Its referbished, but it should be basicaly the same as a new one, and the GTX 1060 in it will manage 1080p 60fps on max settings in modern fames, and should hold up pretty well for 2-3 years, or 3-4 if you're willing to play games at low. its battery life wont be great though, especialy the smaller model

I got this one and I upgraded it with a 512 gig m.2 pcie SSD drive which was about 300:

It's absurdly fast honestly, but if your going to do heavy VR or gaming on that 4k monitor, maybe the 1070 is better. In anycase the G-sync monitor is beautiful. Very vivid and extremely smooth gameplay. I got it when I travel for work too haha

Asus recently released a few laptops with the new GTX 10-series chips. The cheapest of the bunch comes with the new GTX 1060 chip and a 6th gen i7-6700HQ, but it's still quite expensive ($1229.00 for the 15.6" variant, and $1248.99 for the 17.3" variant). This laptop will definitely run BF1 perfecrly on ultra and it is no doubt a great bang for your buck.

If you don't want to spend that much, there is a slightly older version of the same laptop with the GTX 970M chip, which is still quite expensive, but it will also run BF1 perfectly.

Hey there, mind if I pick your brain a bit longer? I'm most likely going to go with a 10xxm GPU, and I'm thinking that going to 1070 is a worthwhile investment for only ~300 dollars more. I was wondering what your thoughts were on the Sager vs. the Asus.

Sager: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8152-clevo-p650rp6.html

Asus: https://www.amazon.com/GL502VM-G-SYNC-Gaming-i7-6700HQ-7200RPM/dp/B01KB0WJ1G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473365434&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+gtx+1060+laptop

I would also upgrade the Sager's memory to 16GB, so the prices are the same.

Lastly, if I were to do a 1070 I was thinking the higher up Asus

Asus 1070: http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-gl502vs-db71.html

I'm wondering if you think either the Sager or the Asus with the 1060 are comparable builds, and whether the Asus with the 1070 would be a good move for the performance boost.

u/CanadianCyanide · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

If you absolutely need a gaming laptop, you won't get good bang-for-your-buck, but thanks to the new laptops with desktop GPUs, you'll still get good performance. Also, are you going to be playing any games on this laptop?

EDIT: Something like this is good if you need a gaming laptop over an okay laptop and a PC build as you'll get GPU power almost as good as the desktop GPU 1060

Should I go with the additional ssd? Is it worth it, or just take the terabyte?

u/jpaek1 · 1 pointr/computers

I just recently upgraded but had an Asus ROG laptop that was great. I had it for over 4 years and really didn't have any real issues with it. I have a Gigabyte laptop now and while it is nice, I think overall the Asus build quality was better. If I were looking around $1300, I'd probably look towards a i7 6700HQ with a GTX 1060. Something with specs like this: https://www.amazon.com/15-6-inch-G-SYNC-2-6GHz-GL502VM-GeForce/dp/B01KB0WJ1G/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483987462&sr=1-4&keywords=gaming+laptop&refinements=p_36%3A100000-130000

As for which brand and model, I'd say read reviews and see what you think best fits you. The only one I might stay clear of is MSI as they seem to have heat issues but again, just read reviews and watch some youtube reviews and pick what you think would fit you best.

edit: you'd want an SSD your laptop at some point as well if you get one that doesn't come with. It isn't critical but it sure makes life a lot better.
