It looks as if they are currently out of stock, but keep checking back, as this product is amazing!
> Just bought a Samsung Gear VR. While it's fun to use, it seems that it can't do much with my phone heating
Consider a cooling solution.
For the white 2015 Gear VR (SM-R322):
For all Gear VR models:
Or you could just sit in front of a fan, which actually increases immersion in some games (Rush, UltraWings etc).
> or it not rendering quickly enough if I try to stream videos
A new phone probably wont help you with that.
> So my question is this. How much better would it work on the S7 and on the S8?
The S7 is certainly less prone to overheating, and the S8 is even better again. I literally haven't experienced a single overheating event since I moved on from my S6, though reports do differ.

Using this for a few year snow, phone isnt even hot when i take it off GearVR. Its amazing.
This cooling fan works great for the Gear VR. But it's only for the white Gear VR, not the newest version.

If you're on the first generation white GearVR, you might invest in one of these.
Just putting this here for any that didn't know it existed. Works fantastic

I paid over $850 long ago for a Note 5 so i could experience Gear VR. The Note 5's display broke so I bought a used S6 for $200.
I use the following cooling fan and the S6 will not overheat.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KPTSQ4W/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I2YYE48FAL7ZX&colid=RZMBCA14K6EL
I don't know if it's possible for S7s and S8s to overheat, but if they do, the fan is the solution for those phones too. Why spend 10, 15 or 30 minutes in VR when you can stay there as long as you like -- on an S6 or Note 5. The new Gear VR controller even works with the S6.
Since I haven't tried an S7 or S8, I don't know performance-wise how much I'd gain by upgrading to an S8 when it comes to VR. Cooling's my main concern and the fan keeps the S6 and Note 5 cool. You could go the gel pack route and put those in the Gear VR, but a one-time payment of $35 for the fan eliminates that headache.
The fan is a cover that looks like the Gear VR's original over. You snap the fan cover on the Gear VR, cut it on and you're done. Without that fan, my S6 will overheat in 15 minutes or less. That time may be different for different phone owners. From what I've read, some people can use an S6 in the Gear VR for longer periods of time without a fan running.
I did notice a slightly bigger FOV on the Note 5 but it's not that significant. Back in the day, even Carmack said the FOV between those two phones wasn't that big of a deal -- even thought the Note 5's bigger.
Here's one review of the fan from the review page..

Very impressed! A friend and I both have the same phone, so we put this to the test. I put the Fan on my Gear VR at the start of play, and we played the game Wands against each other. After about 8 matches, his phone was very hot and starting to jitter. I took mine out and it was cool to the touch. Normally, mine would be in the same shape as his.
Soo these exist....
You could try the Samsung Gear VR Cooling Fan
There is currently a Gear VR cooling fan sold on amazon for 35$.
I haven't gotten it yet, but according to the reviews, people are head over heels for this thing. It doesn't operate on the Gear's battery, it has it's own LiPo. It will add some extra weight, but I'm guessing it's better than an overheating phone. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KPTSQ4W/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AJBDT8STJICUH
Or just buy this cover which has its own battery, power button, and passthrough for the camera with no extra wires.
That was the beauty of the original GearVR compared to everything that followed. It had that removal cover that fit over the phone after it was mounted. So it was easy to DIY a little fan onto that cover to cool down the phone. For people that don't DIY, there were commercial solutions. With the fan on there, there is no overheating.

I have this same problem with my s7. I even bought this to help https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Cooling-COMPATIBLE-consumer-built/dp/B01KPTSQ4W but of course it still overheats and turns off. I’m hoping the Oreo update fixes some issues.
Something like this helps tremendously with the s6

If you have the white 2015 edition I highly recommend this:

I recently got one and I find it very effective.
vrpadding.com pads are so much better than the original pads. Also here's a cooling fan.
Also eat a dick.
Or try this:

My S7 used to get hot flying my Phantom 3. It used to get REALLY HOT using the Gear VR. A company just came out with cooling apparatus for the S7. You might be able to retrofit it? Here it is:

Ah that's sad to hear :( maybe try a USB powered fan on the front with a battery pack?
If you have a 2015 white Gear VR then this looks pretty cool: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Cooling-COMPATIBLE-consumer-built/dp/B01KPTSQ4W
I bought this. Just another option for white ver.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KPTSQ4W/ref=cm_sw_r_fm_apa_9kuuybAGQBQ7R
The issues are weight and fan sound. Neither bother me.
If you can find the white 2015 gear vr headset you can order this from amazon to handle the S6 heat issue. I used this constantly before I upgraded to an S7 and it stopped my overheating issues. The fan is very quiet and it still allows camera passthrough and the headphone jack. It only works with the white 2015 model though.

I really thought about getting one, but I ordered this instead: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KPTSQ4W?psc=1
It was $10 cheaper so I figured what the heck. It doesn't charge my phone, but I have a cheap power brick I use. I'm going to probably place a piece of velcro somewhere on the headset just velcro the power brick to it when I may need it.
I also plan on doing a review after a week or so. I'll post it on this sub when I do.
