I use Philips SHP9500S (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826138190) with V-MODA BoomPro (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00BJ17WKK/)
the Philips SHP9500S are very light, comfortable and loose fitting. They are also open-back headphones with superior soundstage.
Edit if money is a problem just buy these (https://smile.amazon.com/CORSAIR-HS50-Certified-Headphones-Nintendo/dp/B0764MRM34/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1525427059&sr=8-4&keywords=corsair+headset&dpID=41O5Y-TB1-L&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch)
I have used the Corsair HS50 for about 5 months now. I haven't noticed a single problem with them and I use them frequently.
Any recommendations for a low-key headset? I'd like decent quality, but nothing with fancy colours or gaming looks to it. I was thinking sennheiser. It'd have to have a mic, too!
edit: thoughts on this?
This is the best 'cheap' headset per reviewers I trust: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0764MRM34?tag=thewire06-20&linkCode=xm2&ascsubtag=AwEAAAAAAAAAAVQ0
Here's my go-to reference article about it: https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-gaming-headset/
Very nice skill you got there man,and you play really cautious, i wouldnt notice that sound and wouldve been dead. I use CORSAIR HS50 - Stereo Gaming Headset they are open type aswell. What does soundcard do for you? Increases specific sounds or all total? What do you think about theory of playing without headphones and getting Perception to crown level? Ive heard from players who play without headphones that it levels up by playing without them and not just by looting. It also looks wrong on how your sound radius and all that levels up from looting. Each time i tried it, i died to bullshit sound, and facing enemy sideways, and i couldnt kept doing it. There are situations where sound is complete bullshit, spinning around or only your head helps but not allways. Thats why many downvoted you.
I have the Corsair HS50's. Great construction and very comfortable with not that bad of a price tag either.
I have the Corsair HS50 wired and it's pretty nice, especially for $50. The HS60 has good reviews as well, though it's essentially the same as the HS50 with a USB adapter that allows for better surround on PC. If you don't plan on using them on PC, I'd stick with the HS50.
I use these: Corsair HS60

I've had them since June of last year and they're still in perfect condition after almost every weekend use. You can detach the mic so it can look like regular headsets and the mic is crystal clear according to my friends. Been using it on the PS4, Switch, Vita, 3ds and my phone. You can adjust the volume on the headset itself and mute the mic if you need to with a touch of a button. There is a wireless version that claims to have 7.1 surround but that's only on PC with the use of a dongle. This is the first headset I've used that didn't bother my big head playing hours upon hours.

There are a ton of free games I'm sure he'll love, Fortnite, Warframe, Trove.
It comes with an HDMI cable. Maybe this headset would be good, i know its quality and decently priced.
Name a single headset you can buy new today that "sounds like ass."
I'll give one example. The Corsair HS50 is $50 right now and in this video for example he sounds pretty good.
You'd have to buy a $10 Chinese knockoff and even then it probably wouldn't be that terrible.
