It took Mate 9 4 months for the price to drop c. -$100 USD.Then the price remained relatively level (selling price 450-500USD).

It took Mate 10 Pro 1 month to drop -$100USD and then the price get dropping steadily and had come down -$300 USD in 6 months after release:

I think it depends quite a lot how well the Mate 20 Pro sells.

Usually also the higher the starting price, the more the price drops during the first 6 months (unless it's an iPhone).

Also, P30 series willl probably be released in March (perhaps announcement in MWC Barcelona in February 2019, or just after), based on P20 and P10 release dates.

This is usually also the time, when the previous flagship (Mate series) drops in price, because the P-series will become the new flagship.

So, in 5 months I expect the price to drop considerably.

This time might be different of course.

I considered the G6, especially w/ the $600 price tag.
But honestly I couldn't pay that much for a phone w/ last years hardware specs. I'd rather just buy the Huawei Mate 9 for $600 on Amazon (which has better specs than the G6).

In the end I'll be going with big 'S' since I want a large-ass screen but w/ 2017 specs. (S8+)

Other best phones for rooting like the moto g5 plus and google pixels first versions under that price limit.

I would recommend the Huawei Mate 9. It is $136 CAD over your budget.

Another option that is in your budget is the Samsung Galaxy S7.

They both have good battery life and great cameras.
