And if you like the combo systems below, here's an even cooler one.

"Remake! Remake! Remake! Remake!" Hey, I get it, Retro is in. But enough with the remakes already! If you want to replay an old game, then do so! There are a lot of options and it seems like all you "remake" kids are completely unaware they exist.

Get an original SNES. Get a SNES clone. Get a handheld SNES clone. Get yourself an emulator like ZSNES or SNES9x, which are available on pretty much every platform you can imagine.

But please, enough with remakes. I want some new original games.

Here's an NES/SNES/Genesis clone for $50. The Chinese are probably just waiting for the patents to run out on the N64 to build a clone there.

The problem is that you're stuck playing original games or buying bootlegs since copyrights don't expire.

u/MrGraveRisen · 2 pointsr/gaming

These exist because the patent has expired on the old nintendo systems http://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-Retron-System-GENESIS-Nintendo-Entertainment/dp/B003O3EFY2

I don't see a full-sized SNES or Genesis/MegaDrive either (unless you've got them somewhere else). If you're interested in the clone systems, I'd recommend a Retron 3. They're like half the price of a Retron 5 and almost as useful; they can't play GB/GBC/GBA or MasterSystem games, but for NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis/MegaDrive, they're pretty decent!

You can get her a DS for fairly reasonable prices and Mario Kart DS for okay prices and its a pretty decent Mario Kart, also the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games so if you maybe doubled the cost you could get hold of a 3DS and Mariokart DS and later on get Mario Kart 7 which is considered one of the best.

The Snes and N64 versions are a great blast, particularly in multiplayer so if you want to share the experience these are probably the best versions to get.

N64's are built like brick poop houses, the important thing to remember is that the controllers would crap out a long time before the console so check the 3d stick doesn't crunch when moved and it centers when untouched, theres sometimes issues with corrosion on the cart slot and power supplies failing but generally as long as you can see the thing running before you buy you should be alright. Snes is also a very robust console, the important things to check is for corrosion on the cartridge slot and once again controllers, check the D-Pad isn't loose and the shoulder buttons feel solid but not overly tight, 3rd party joypads are easy to find and work just fine but quality can sometimes be an issue, the SNES power block tends to outlast the consoles but check for damaged wires and kinks but replacements are cheap. AV cables for Snes and N64 can be found on amazon or ebay for dirt cheap prices so if you find a console missing some cables you can take a chance if its cheap.

You could try getting a Wii and the GameCube version, although I find that Double Dash is not such a great Mario Kart in my opinion but it is fun. As long as the Wii you're buying has the gamecube controller ports (Amazon, Ebay, and you'll find cheap used official controllers and my local Gamestop even stocks compatible controllers so you shouldn't be unable to find gamecube controllers) it will play Gamecube games but if you get one of the later versions you won't have backwards compatibility, check something like craigs list and you might find some kind of a bargin, bonus about going this way is you also have access to Mario Kart Wii and several other AAA Nintendo games too boot Just noticed you already seem to own a Wii so forget that part.

Be aware that you can get 3rd party unofficial consoles, results vary but the stuff thats been coming out in recent years does a reasonable job playing most popular games without much if any issues. It would take a trained eye to spot the differences between popular games played on a Snes or say a Retron more Retron info if your keen. Get official joypads or 3rd party recreations as everyone hates the bundled joypads. Big positive about going this way is you can also get her Mario Bros ( nes game is very cheap because its extremely common, pay more than a couple dollars for it and you're a fool) Depending on what you find in your area you might find this is the better option purely for costs.

Check goodwill stores if they don't carry electronics ask them if they know who does. I wish there was something like this in my hometown in Ireland or any kind of pawn shop or second hand store. In this day and age everyone has internet access so prices can sometimes seem stupidly high because people just look at "Buy it Now" prices on ebay forgetting that the actual completed listings that sold is what determines a consoles price and demand, check the completed listings on ebay and narrow the range to say 50 miles from your location, sometimes you'll see failed to sell consoles with 2-3 bids because unreasonable sellers think retro = cash, look for consoles that sold on their bid prices and that should give you a guide about how much a console costs. Always check the seller on Amazon and Ebay, you don't want any nasty surprises and try to stick with sellers who appear to sell consoles because if they say its working and have a good rating then its probably a fully working console. //wall of text.

Why pay hundreds of dollars to play classics? My brother has one of these and we get a better selection of great classics for a much better price.

Retron 3?

Retron 5 is also available.

Also Genesis games. I got one of these when I moved so I didn't have to hook up all three again. It works great! Uses the original controllers and everything. From some videos apparently sometimes the sound is a little off but for anyone that just wants a bit more convenience with their old school gaming I definitely recommend it.

EDIT: Also, here is an Amazon link to the same item. A bit cheaper:

Just throwing an idea out here, but if you haven't heard of the Retron you might be interested. Pretty decent 3rd party console that combines the SNES, NES, and Sega.

It's got pretty good reviews so I'm thinking of buying one myself soon.

My mistake. This is the thing he has.

u/ser3nitynow · 1 pointr/gamingsuggestions

Well, PS2 can play any PS1 game.

Also, I think there is a super console of sorts for Sega/Nintendo for earlier eras. I haven't ever used one though, so I've no idea how well it works.

Some of the more popular PS1 games have made it to the Playstation Network. They generally work on PS3/4 and the PSP/Vita.

Some games have made it to Steam, and GOG has some as well. I think FFVII, VIII, and IX are on there. Possibly X and 12. I haven't checked.

--edit: For PS1 games on the PS2, you'll need PS1 memory cards. There should be third party cards you can buy. I bought those back in the day since they were larger and cheaper than the official Sony ones.

OP, are you asking about like a video switch? Something that would take in all the video signals and allow you to switch between signals on the fly? Or are you asking about a device that plays all different sorts of games?

If you're asking about a video switch of some kind, you can definitely get them from Amazon.

If you're asking about a device that plays "all" games, the closest you're going to get is just emulation on a PC. Other than that, you'll have to look at devices like the Retron, but that only covers NES, SNES and Genesis.

u/Deranged40 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

For me, I have no interest in playing retro games unless I have the retro controller. A newer USB-counterpart such as this off-brand SNES controller suffices. But for me, the old games are just as much about the old controllers.

Then you've got dedicated emulator systems such as this SNES/NES/Genesis combo which is really neat. And there's another one by a more popular brand that I can't think of right off hand that emulates like 5 systems. With slots for each system's cartridge as well as controllers.

Only if they could prove in court that Nintendo didn't enforce their IP. But Nintendo has enforced its IP over the years, so no.

Unless you are talking about running existing cartridges. In which case they already exist: https://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-Retron-System-GENESIS-Nintendo-Entertainment/dp/B003O3EFY2
