Although not the cheapest, ebay is probably the easiest way to find faulty systems.

Some equipment recommendations:

• A TS100 soldering iron. I use a more expensive Hakko FX888-D, but I've heard great things about this one for the price. Try to get a chisel tip for general purpose use, it has a balanced combination of size and heat transfer.
  
• iFixit 64-bit toolkit, for handling all the various screws you'll encounter.
  
• Soldapullt desoldering pump. Don't bother with the Chinese knock-offs, they seem to break easily.
  
• Fine 63/37 solder. One roll will last you a long time. Don't bother with cheap Chinese solder, it will not have the advertised metal composition and give poor results.
  
• I like this flux, but it's kind of pricey.
  
• Desoldering braid is essential.
  
• Neoteck multimeter. Very good for the price.
  
• If you need to remove SMD components, a 858D hot air station available under various Chinese brands you've never heard of. Kind of sketchy, but works and has not burned down my home yet.

To remove the backplate you need Torx T5 screwdriver bit, there are total of 10 Torx screws and there are two standard Philips screws under the XPS logo.

I've personally found this kit to be great for almost any electronic teardown. It will have all the pieces you need.

Keep in mind that those screws are super soft and low quality, so it is likely you will strip those down. However, if you have patience and are careful you might be able to get them out without stripping them.

In case you do end up stripping those, Amazon will have replacement screws.

How's the warranty. As someone who has torqued out numerous small torx bits (usually t6 and smaller) I buy for warranty over anything. I find ifixit has an amazing warranty, if a bit breaks a quick call and a new one is on the way. Admittedly I don't carry the set everyday as you do but worth considering.

Edit: this is the kit I have, pros are: very strong warranty help, and more than twice as many bits for the same cost. Cons are it does not have that cool high quality aluminum feel (I would describe it as feeling quality but I get the aluminum also the driver is aluminum but the case is thick plastic) and while easily carried in a bag it's less portable (I guess you could just carry what you use most but that's shitty). As someone who uses it at home I have no complaints but I am not using it professionally and don't carry it all day.

Edit #2: I looked up Wiha's warranty and while it is decent it specifically excludes bits, and is potentially only 1 year for other parts.

You can call Nintendo and see if they will fix it.

If it's within warranty they should, otherwise you may have to pay.

The JoyCon's ( And I believe the rest of the external screws on the Switch ) use a Y00 screw, not a Tri-Wing like Nintendo used to use.

I swapped shells. I had to swap the shells a couple times because I got defective shells, which Basstop replaced free of charge. Therefore, I screwed and unscrewed the joycons multiple times.

I have the iFixit driver kit and I did not strip even a single screw. So to answer your question, the iFixit 'tri-tip' will work perfectly. Can't recall if its Y00 but that sounds right.

I bought this tekton screwdriver kit and it's worked beautifully for everything I've needed so far. If you ever need more, the iFixit Mako is worth every penny.

if you're needing a screwdriver set for literally everything, check this out! it's an absolute life saver. they also have different versions with other repair tools as well.

I just did mine the other day (I call it peppermint).

Also bought the same toolkit and would NOT recommend it. Just shell out for the iFixit tool kit (or something similar).

For the joycons you're also going to need a very thin/long prying tool to unlock the ribbon cables and a good set of tweezers. All tools should be plastic too.

I used these 2 videos which covered everything I needed.

The hardest part will be swapping out the ZL/ZR buttons, but just watch the videos and take your time.

To comment on the D-pad, it is AMAZING. It's a bit stiffer than the pro controller but still feels really good. I did trying using it as a single controller in Mario Kart and hurts, so I wouldn't do it if you play that way a lot.

Kinda overkill to use for Nintendo Switch shell replacement. Some of that stuff you get with that bundle would only be necessary for some invasive smartphone repair.

I instead got this cheaper kit (which is still pretty overkill to use on the Switch but is a good kit to have for all your electronic repair needs) plus this tweezer set. Buying these would save $20.

It includes basically any bit you will possibly need for any small repairs and maintenance for knives and electronics.

As others have said, majority of knives uses Torx screws in typically T6 and T8 sizes.

It look me about 8 hours to assemble my mk3. I've since assembled two more, 6 hours and then 5.5 hours. Read the manual carefully and I strongly recommend using a nice spinning hex driver like one from ifixit. They are much faster and easier to use than the included hex key.

I use the 5mm nut driver in my screwdriver set to remove motherboard stand-offs. It is the perfect size and shape for the job.

You can either buy that whole driver set or you can get the single one you need.

I usually use the cheap allens which come with the printer. However I recently picked this up and now I have tools for all kinds of stuff.

I have this one by iFixit! It’s a bit overkill but it comes with super high quality Y00 & PH00 screwdrivers.

iFixit's screwdriver kit is good, but there's dozens of kits that are all fine for $30 or less. The ifixit one has pentalobe (apple) and tri-tip stuff for more uncommon screw heads.

For screws: Egg Carton, Ice Cube Tray, etc all work just fine.But this tray is neat too.

You can buy one of the following toolkits. They are amazing for its price and you may reuse them at some point. I use them all the time. Don’t ware money on cheap shit. You will damage your expensive peace of tech.

If you have a small screw driver you could try using a rubber band to remove the screw.
