Amazon has it for $279 through Beach Camera and $285.99 through Amazon.

Hardest part was mounting the monitor. My nameplate on the back is what's holding monitor to top of case. Other then that, everything else is Velcro down.

Also had to sacrifice no HDR. Couldn't find a 4K that fit. Here is the one I got in now. LG 24UD58-B 24-Inch 4K UHD IPS Monitor with FreeSync https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LPNKFK0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ir37AbXXH38D3

I have 2 of these, and 1 of the 27" version. These are cheap 4k monitors that look pretty close to the Retina display. It depends what you want I guess, I dont play games or do video work, but I look at text (code) all day , so the 4k resolution is very nice for me for the price.

>Also, no offense, but if you think you're getting high end picture quality from a $450 Vizio, you might not be as discerning as you think.

No offense taken. But then how could one explain the picture quality between a 4k 24" LG monitor and my Vizio tv being practically identical? I mean, I sit right in front of both screens, about 1.5ft away - with the same image on both screens. While the LG supports Freesync, with both screens color-balanced I don't notice a difference. When the evidence is right in front of my eyes I often find the "well maybe it's just you" excuse hard to swallow.

>Response times is a big one. Virtually no TVs will have as fast a response time as high end monitors. They offer much higher refresh rates as well and g-sync, free-sync etc.

I guess high response times are important if you're trying to go higher than 120hz, but I've never been quite that frame-obsessed - and realistically you can't maintain anywhere close to 120hz in modern AAA 4k titles at high graphics settings.

Anyone have any opinions on this monitor? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LPNKFK0#Ask

I already have a 4k tv but I plan on using this to play while I'm away at college.

If you haven't already ordered that 27ES, I suggest waiting a bit. Yes, it will work fine with your MBPR, and everything on the screen will be the right physical size as people have mentioned.

But if you're used to the high quality, non-pixelated display you're getting now (especially for text), a 27" FHD monitor is going to be pretty disappointing by comparison.

Some numbers:

Your 13" display has 227 pixels per inch, or 51,520 pixels per square inch.

The 27ES has 81.6 pixels per inch, or 6,659 pixels per square inch.

51,520 / 6,659 is about 7.74.

In other words, where you have about 8 pixels on your MacBook, they are crunched down to one pixel on the 27" display. That's a huge difference, especially in text crispness and clarity.

Everything will be bigger, all right, but you won't be able to put more "stuff" on the screen.

My personal recommendation to pair with either a 13" or 15" MBPR is a 24" UHD/4K display. For example, the LG 24UD58-B has a pixel density of 185 pixels per inch or 34,269 pixels per square inch. That's a reasonably close match to the Retina display's density, and you get the exact same number of pixels you'd have on a 27" UHD/4K display for less money.

It is more than you'd pay for the 27ES, but again comparing the numbers:

34,269 / 6,659 is 5.15. So you're getting 5 times the number of pixels per square inch.

That LG looks like one of the better values in 24" UHD/4K displays right now. As usual for Amazon, the price always goes up and down. It's a bit less than $300 right now.

Here's a spreadsheet that compares the pixel density of a variety of monitors.

Important Note

The other reason to get a BIG display even if it has poor pixel density is if your eyesight isn't good and you simply need the larger physical size because things are too blurry otherwise. If this hasn't happened to you yet, it will. Do yourself a favor and visit a good optometrist. Bring your MacBook with you and tell them you want a pair of single vision lenses adjusted for the distance to your computer screen. You don't want a "reading" prescription; that is typically about 16" focusing distance. You want a single vision prescription for your computer screen, closer to 20" for most people.

I have seen too many of my friends and colleagues who have to put their faces close to the screen and squint to make things out, when their vision could be easily corrected. I used to be that way myself: "I'm just not the type of person who needs glasses." But when I got my first pair of single vision computer lenses, well, let's just say it it was a real eye-opener.

u/rsplatpc · 3 pointsr/amazon

> No idea, but my guess is that it has nothing to do with Amazon choosing the superior product, but whatever will make more money for them.

I'm all aboard the hail corporate train usually, but for Amazon's choice it seems to be a balance of solid reviews and low price to the reviews to be honest, for instance I highly doubt Amazon is making a killing on this $284 4k monitor that has pretty much universally high reviews on every reviewing website vs other 4k monitors, and this is "Amazon's Choice" when searching just "4k Monitor"

u/MakiiZushii · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I also have an RTX 2060, and I wouldn't suggest going 4K with it. The performance dropped significantly just on the jump from 1080p to 1440p (from 123fps to 80fps). I haven't tried 4K but the benchmarks for it average about ~40fps.

I'm not professional but I do use quite a bit of Photoshop and After Effects, and they do look quite nice on 24" QHD 1440p. So that is my recommendation, especially with a variety of color-accurate and arts-oriented displays in that category. You should look for QHD in sizes smaller than 27" as it is necessary to get that extra pixel density. Unfortunately your options are very, very limited if you want both color-accurate IPS panels AND FreeSync (G-Sync is basically all TN panels), but Acer offers a couple options: the QHD 24" 1ms Acer NITRO VG240YU if you live in the UK, or Acer's QHD 24" 5ms EB243YU if you live elsewhere (also my personal pick, so obviously I'm biased).

If you still want to go 4K though, LG sells a FreeSync 24" 4K IPS for $349, currently $249 on Amazon (link).

Well I think there are two main questions, first of all what sort of display scaling do you plan on using on your OS and how close are you willing to sit to the monitor? From what you said I think that a 4k display would be best since you essentially get 4 1080p monitors right next to each other. The main downside is size, you can get a decent 24 inch 4k monitor for 280 bucks on Amazon, but 27 inch costs nearly 400 dollars and 30 inch or beyond would blow way past your budget. One easy solution to this is to simply sit closer to your monitor but that isn't always a good option ergonomically speaking. Personally I got a 4k 24 inch monitor and use it without any display scaling and I just sit really close to it. That gets me loads of space for multi-tasking and text at a competitive price.

Personally I don't there's any reason to buy a single 1080p monitor if you are going to be using it with your laptop since your laptop presumably already has a 1080p display and that just isn't enough pixels to keep lots of windows and text on the screen at once. You could get a new 1080p monitor in the low 20 inch range for 90 bucks. Getting two of those is probably the best bet for under 200 bucks.

You could also get one or two of these 24 inch 2k displays. However getting just one of them is probably on the small side of things and 2 would probably blow past your budget. Still if you get just 1 it's cheaper than any 4k display and if you get 2 its cheaper than any 30 inch 4k display.

Also don't get a TN display they are cheaper and have better response times (which only matters for gaming) but they have much worse colors and the viewing angles are bad as well. IPS based displays offer far superior colors and viewing angles which makes them preferable for productivity work.

u/TrueDiligence · 2 pointsr/Monitors

Just to clarify, resolution is the determining factor in how much you can fit on a screen. A 32" 1440p display and a 27" 1440p display can fit the same amount of 'stuff' on the screen.

I'm not a fan of Sceptre. They are generally poor quality displays and many have QC issues (dead pixels being the most common), but $230 is the cheapest you will find a 4K monitor. If you wanted a 4K IPS monitor besides that one you would be looking at the following:

LG 24UD58 - $270

> This is a 24" 4K monitor, way too small to make the most of the resolution, even for coding.

Acer - $329

> This is 27" which is more reasonable, but has a weird stand (if that matters to you).

Ideally a 4K monitor would be 32"+. Running 4 applications at 1080p on a 24" 4K screen is like running those same applications at 1080p on a 12" screen, similar to using a netbook. When using a netbook you would typically have it very close to you, with a monitor on a desk that won't be the case.

-------------------

For your use and budget I would suggest the Acer G247HYU. It's a decent panel, but the stand is very minimal. It's cheap, under $200, and you can add a second monitor in the future to have more screen real estate.

u/ohdeno · 2 pointsr/linux

Ubuntu really has the best defaults for font rendering in low-dpi scenarios.

It’s right in the middle between OS X’s horrible blurry mess (I mean seriously how do you not get an instant headache from that thing) and Windows’ super crisp but boring and ugly as hell Cleartype.

You can, of course, configure Cleartype to actually look decent (if you also change default fonts), but let’s be honest no one does that.

If you can get yourself a 4k display. It’s seriously worth every penny. And they’re not that expensive (309.84 USD) anymore. At only $0.04 per kilopixel it’s actually cheaper than most new 1080p displays.

u/The---Technician · 2 pointsr/suggestapc

For VR you will need at least a gtx 1060 Graphics Card. I would recommend you go with the $1100 you can go so that you can get a decent 4k monitor.

Get this : LG 24UD58-B 24-Inch 4K UHD IPS Monitor along with this CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8060A2 Desktop which comes with the Gtx 1060 Graphics card and support VR very well.. There you have it, decent gaming PC that will run those games you mentioned and a good 4k monitor.

u/puffpuffpoof · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

I got it off Amazon for $247. It's very pricy I know but it's probably the cheapest 24 inch 4k monitor I could find with factory color calibration. Note that this model doesn't have the "P" in its model name but the Newegg one on sale does. I'm not sure of the differences besides the monitor stand.

I was originally going to get this Dell Monitor but found that the LG was the same panel and $100 dollars cheaper. The Dell has more accurate colors and more ports but lacks freesync.

u/Jasons2334 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Yeah, I was considering this too given the reviews and price

u/Jotokun · 2 pointsr/Monitors

Unfortunately, the only monitors approaching that PPI are the LG UltraFine 5K and the upcoming Apple Pro XDR display, both of which only work with Thunderbolt 3 compatible Macs. The only way you're hitting that price point is if you get lucky keeping an eye on the secondhand market for the 5K UltraFine.

If you can live with a 24" display, you might consider the LG 24UD58-B which is 190 PPI.

I would not recommend either of the monitors you linked, 21:9 1080p at 34" is only 81.72 PPI.

u/infered5 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

It really depends on the person. Some people can't live without 4K once they've gotten a taste of it, others like myself are perfectly content with 1080p.

[The LG 24UD58-B] (https://www.amazon.com/LG-24UD58-B-24-Inch-Monitor-FreeSync/dp/B01LPNKFK0/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1517855573&sr=1-3&keywords=4k+monitor) is an Amazon Choice^TM product, whatever that means. Supports Freesync too, which your 470 will love.

[The Samsung U28E590D] (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-U28E590D-28-Inch-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B00YD3DBOC/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1517855573&sr=1-5&keywords=4k+monitor) is a 4K monitor with Freesync. A little more expensive, because it has PIP 2.0 capabilities.

If your rig can't handle a certain game at 4K, you can always lower the resolution back to 1080p (1440p will cause scaling issues and look terrible, you'll want 1080p).

I have this monitor, I know it's not 30", but that size of monitor has always been stupid expensive, and 4K with the bells and whistles is not going to be cheap unfortunately.

I love my monitor, though!

u/Ooooooosh · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm needing to update my two monitors to 4K ones for this new system. What I've used for quite a while is a 27" primary monitor and a 24" secondary monitor to it's left. I decided to replace the secondary with something not outrageously expensive and I wanted it to be the same size. I found this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LPNKFK0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

LG 24UD58-B 24-Inch 4K UHD IPS Monitor with FreeSync

Now naturally, I wish it had G-Sync instead of FreeSync since I'm getting an Nvidia card. But since it's just my secondary monitor and unlikely to ever be involved in gaming, I wasn't too worried about it.

I just thought I'd see if anyone here thinks there's some compelling reason to do something different. It was 24" and 4K... not crazy pricey... seemed like a good replacement for my 24" 1080p monitor I've had for a long time.

Would love feedback.

Any suggestions on a nice cord for connecting the PC to the Monitor?

Could not get a picture simply going HDMI between the two. No problems with the build as I get a perfectly fine display hooking up to an older monitor.

Handcuffing your 1080ti to a 60Hz 1440p monitor is a waste of money. All that GPU speed you paid for should be put to good use. If you can't afford a 1440p/144Hz monitor right now (start at $400) then maybe consider 4k instead: https://www.amazon.com/LG-24UD58-B-24-Inch-Monitor-FreeSync/dp/B01LPNKFK0

If you really just want a cheaper 1440/60Hz monitor, you can return your 1080ti and get a 1070 or 1080 instead, which would be more than capable and put some cash back in your pocket.

Got it. It may be a struggle to find the size you want given the technology. I believe Dell makes a 24" 4k, but I'm not sure about specs. LG has one and I think the response time on this guy is 5ms.

u/AmdahlCube · 1 pointr/DestinyTheGame

I just put some monitor recs into the tool, and I'm going to post an update to all this next week taking into account what we know about Xbox One X now.

I've got a 1440p144, G-Sync monitor. It's freaking amazing - ROG Swift PG278Q. Unfortunately, it runs about $750, so it's like spending on a system itself. If you're just looking for a 1440p60 monitor, the Asus PB278Q is great and comes in at $380.

Right now, though, the 4K monitors are in pricing freefall. The LGUD58-B is only $313, and it comes with FreeSync. That's less than some of the cheapest 1080p144 monitors with G-Sync, like the Acer XB241H at $370.

For 1080p60, the Asus VS238H-P is a solid starter at $120. If you move up to 1080p144, the Asus VG248QE is the one that looked the best at $255.

Edit: it's still early on HDR. It's currently only available on top of the line systems but there's no technical reason it won't filter down lower. I probably wouldn't invest $400+ right now until the monitors support HDR but the monitors out there are still going to look and perform great.

u/freakingwilly · 1 pointr/gaming

According to PC Part Picker (filters enabled: 3840x2160 resolution, 1-2ms response time, under 25 inches), that monitor does not exist. The best you could do is with a 3ms response time on the ViewSonic VX2475Smhl-4K... but that monitor is discontinued.

Go with the LG 24UD58-B. 4K, 24", 5ms response time. It's also an IPS panel, so the color accuracy and viewing angles are better than TN panels.

I see that has the same 250 brightness spec. In fact on paper it looks pretty equivalent except for the pivot mode, which I admit looks pretty appealing, but again I have to figure out whether it’s worth $130 more (I could probably get a better vesa desk mount for less than that).

Looks like Amazon has a 24” version of that LG for the same price as the 27 from Monoprice. I believe the one I have at home is a 24”, but upon setting it up I discovered that 1080p (or maybe just this display, it is also a low-end LG that was around the same price a few years ago) is useless for document work in a display of that size.

4k Monitors less than 24" are regularly less than 250. Here's one for $249 (£189)
