Here are some of my recommendations

  • Mario Golf World Tour $19 on Amazon; there is ton of content in this game and if you played the old mario golf on the N64 you will love it. Great for quick sessions.
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate $39 on amazon (or 3 Ultimate $19 if you want cheaper); This game takes a bit to get into, but both 4U and 3U do a decent job teaching you the ropes. This game has hundreds of hours of content and is a really unique game. 4U does have online multiplayer so that extends the life greatly. Also 4U has new FREE DLC each Friday at the beginning of each month. IF you do get this and need help please PM. I love help people get into the game.
  • Fantasy Life $38 on amazon; This game is a mix between Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. The basics of the game is you pick a 'life' you want to play like a fisher, or a mage, or a alchemist and just do stuff. If you get bored of the 'life' you choose you can switch whenever you want. Again a game with hundreds of hours of content.

I won't go into the DS recommendations...since dang there are TONS of amazing games for that system.

True, but OP would have to spend new game price money on MHXX if it comes to the west and MH4U's Physical Edition is right now cheaper than MHGen's eShop sale price.

There's more content to MH4U since it has G rank in it already and still has the benefit of online MP. Later on OP could get MHXX if it's released for rest of world and have two completely different games instead of two similar ones.

If MHXX hadn't been announced for Japan, I would have recommended MHGen. My personal preference would be to not pay 80 USD total for first the base game, then technically an upgrade later. I am a budget gamer, so that influences my purchase mindset.

The sense I get is that Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is generally regarded as the best in the series and Generations is 2nd at this point. Some people might flip those two but if you were to take a poll I think MH4U might come out on top overall. Plus you can get it for like half the price of Generations so you might be better off, and there are surely many hours to be put into it and by the time you do so Generations might be cheaper by then if you want more. Here it is on Amazon for $20:

I think the digital download version is also on sale for $20 on the Nintendo eShop currently since there is a Capcom publisher sale through next week I believe.

As far as some other titles to start a library goes, it depends on what genres you like of course, but it's hard to go wrong with any of the main 3DS Zelda titles (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, A Link Between Worlds), Donkey Kong Country Returns, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Shovel Knight, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Star Fox 64.

Resident Evil Revelations is also very good and currently on sale for $5 on the eShop, which is a steal.
