we have at home 2 shield tablet and one tegra note 7, I love them all, been using them to play, for work, and to study take notes etc. And it seems a lot of people are happy with, and don't forget, happy people almost never leave any review or comment about a device.

If you want a solid tablet from this year, definitely the NVIDIA Shield tablet. Runs games really well (NVIDIA after all) and it has great specs with front-facing speakers, a stylus (optional of course), and a nice 8" screen size.

Here's a review of the tablet!

Transformers are android tablets so they run android. I own the very first model tf101. I'm not sure if I would even recommend one at this point. The only advantage at the time was the keyboard but you can pretty much use a Bluetooth keyboard with any android tablet now and I barely used it anyway. My idea was to replace my laptop with it but that's impossible for the 20% of the time you need an actual laptop. A tablet just won't replace a laptop.

I have a nexus 7 2013 and I really love it. It's less than $150 now so maybe that would be appropriate for your needs and you'll save $250. There are much more robust gaming tablets if that's your thing but any current tablet will play any video/audio and be fine for light work, check out http://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-940-81761-2500-000-SHIELD-Tablet-WiFi/dp/B00LM6KF7O

the new Nvidia Shield Tablet has a pen for solid note taking and a nice sized 8" screen. Many favorable reviews. I have contemplated trading in my Nexus 7 for it. Some pluses:

This is on the Shield Tablet (Not the Shield Portable) that was released today. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. It also doesn't have any data yet since it hasn't gotten to the point where it downloads.

Are you in the US? On the main listing, there's no controller.

> Moreover it has to be a device I'm able to carry around to classes if not for coding then for taking notes and annotating on pre-provided lecture notes

yep

I'm sure it'd handle that quite well

edit: it's ok ... I won't tell no one you're not running games on it

I have spent all night looking for the best solution. My main concern being how well the device is supported by Kali / Nethunter, I thought the range of Out of The Box supported devices was wider. Now I'm also looking for a good price.

there is a new one for 230. I wasn't aware of them no longer selling them, oops. I would try to go to a tablet sub and ask there, they would know more than the people here

Now, this will give you the best of both worlds.

Step One: Build an awesome desktop that will destroy games at 1080p.

CPU is non overclockable but you could get the K edition and upgrade to a Z97 motherboard if you want to overclock.

Solid State drive for your OS and a few of your favorite games. This will make sure load times are as short as possible. A 1TB HDD for whatever you want to store.

Video card is great.

Went for a small case so you can tuck it away in a corner somewhere.

Power Supply is gold certified so it isn't a huge electricity waster (importance will be obvious in a second).

OS.

But, you'd rather have the portability of a laptop! I have the solution.

Step Two: Get an Nvidia Shield Tablet, this awesome case, and whatever accessories you want (shield controller, microusb to ethernet adapter, microusb to usb hub so you can connect a USB mouse and keyboard in addition to the ethernet adapter).

Step Three: Enjoy Gamestream.

Honestly the iPad mini doesn't have a very good screen. The colors are noticeably less vibrant than the other retina iPads (3,4,Air). I noticed it at an Apple store, my wife didn't seem to care but for me it was quite annoying as I'm a color freak designer. I turns out I was right about the inferior screen.

If you want iOS I'd say get and iPad Air, or maybe wait to see if Apple announces a new mini.

If you can't afford it and are ok with Android, for 300$ you can get an Nvidia Shield Tablet, which is one of the most powerful tablets, even more than the iPad Air.

If you don't need much power, for about 200$ you should be able to find a 2013 Nexus 6 tablet, which is still a great tablet for regular use and has an amazing screen.

The Oasis strikes me as a misunderstood concept by Amazon. The idea of having the weight balance be in the palm of the reader makes sense. The problem is that the Oasis ruins this form of ergonomics by pretty much necessitating the battery cover, which turns the device into another Voyager with slightly more battery.

Also, at $300, the price is insane. Nvidia makes the Shield KI at the same price as the Oasis. Infinitely more functionality, except for the display type. Unless your arms are made of straw and you read more than 24 hours a day and can't charge during that time and you desperately need physical buttons, get a Paperwhite. You'll save $200 and get the same experience.
