700 is cutting is close but you could get the savage hog hunter for $450 and the PA 4-14x44 for $230. You'd still need rings and a bipod but that's as close to $700 as I can think of.
>Rule of thumb I've heard before is twice the price as what you've paid for the rifle.
OP, this is good advice if you live in the 20th century or have a hundred dollar rifle.
200 bucks will get you a perfectly good 4-12 vortex scope that will do everything OP wants it to do.
Though yeah, like you said, Primary Arms is also a good option for going cheaper. A 4-14 with first focal plane will only run you 230 bucks. Vortex has a killer warranty though.
I have two of the 4-14 FFPs, they are perfectly usable.

Settling in on a different option, but my friend is worried they skimped somewhere to use the FFP tech. Primary Arms

Maybe even cheaper here, i'll look into it if I want to upgrade.
Affordable beginners scope that has nothing but good reviews is the primary arms 4-14 x 44 ffp. I bought one for my Savage Hog Hunter and love it.

This would be a pretty decent scope choice for the price.

Depending on your budget I do like the vortex strike eagle or the primary arms FFP 4x14x44 . Either scope will be perfect for 556/308

You will need a pepr style mount in 30mm for either of these.

Now I'm also seeing that FFP (Front Focal Plane) is superior to SFP (Secondary Focal Plane), and a good budget scope for FFP is the Primary Arms Primary Arms 4-14X FFP? Could I use that at ranges below 100 yards?
