I like this brand - it's pretty popular. Really just any real, non-instant oats should do. Then you can cook to your desired tenderness, and add flavorings as you desire.

I keep it pretty basic, just add milk, honey, and cinnamon. But you can go balls out with nuts, raising, fruit, etc., if that's your schtick. I really do think it's a lot better than the packets, although I do occasionally keep those around if I expect to be busy.
Prepackaged oatmeal, like Quaker brand, is processed rolled oats, which are oats without the husks. Check out steel cut oats, which are just chopped up whole oats. Way more nutrition out of those babies.
No am I not being paid by Bob's Red Mill lol. I just really like their oats and bulgur and I can get them on Amazon. Wish I could get a sponsorship.
Check out online for bulk and save the packs you don't immediately cook in the freezer so they stay fresh and dry.
Here is where I buy mine: Bob's Red Mill Oats Steel Cut, 24-Ounce (Pack of 4)

Says 1/4 cup is 170 cal. Not sure what oats you're looking at, but most irish/scottish/steel cut oats match those nutritional values.
