Fun Tip
Get a nice flashlight that fits in the grip of your clenched fist. This can be used to temporarily blind the assailant and provide you with support for your pummeling hand.
Things to look for:
This is what I have, but this one could work just as well.
Tactical flashlight - Surefire E2D LED, 500 lumens, strike bezel

Looks like they are legal in CA:

Pepper Spray - Fox Labs 2oz stream (or cone, depending on preference)

Yes, legal in California:

What no one in this thread suggested, which is legal for you to carry and is almost as effective as pepper spray, is a tactical flashlight, in order of increasing price: this or this or this
You can also get a cheaper one online, but I recommend quality if you are relying on it for self defense. Make sure it is at least 200 lumens, preferably 300+ if you want to temporarily blind an attacker. You can then use the distraction created by the blinding light to strike them on the head or other bones such as collar bone, and then run away. You could also take the opportunity to kick them in the knee or balls to allow you time to escape. It takes very little skill to use effectively and it isn't seen as a weapon in most places, so you have a good excuse to be carrying it.
