I installed an after market fan into my friends old xbox because he complained about how loud it was. The new fan had a switch that would make it low or high speed whenever needed. Whenever he would use the low setting on the after market fan and play a game, the console would end up overheat and shut down with the red rings till it cooled off enough to be turned on again.
Not really much you can do, maybe buy some gaming headphones and crank them up while playing.
I put a whisper fan and a aurora in my launch xbox and it still hasn't RRODed.
Try this. You should be able to find the washers and bolts at any hardware store, but the thermal paste might be harder to find. Before Fallout New Vegas came out my 360 RROD'd, and I fixed it using this guide. I haven't had any problems since. I also highly recommend getting on of these.
