A lot of them are custom tailored to that magician's question, but here are some basics that will take any of your photography/film projects to the next level.
----------------------

Less a tutorial and more a basic list of do's and don'ts. Many people just point and shoot then end up with unwatchable crap.

------------------------------

All of this seems pretty intuitive, but enough of it goes wrong and stuff starts looking bad. Print this out and have it with you if you want a cheat sheet. Hit me up with any questions.

USEFUL EQUIPMENT:
Get a monopod or tripod to stabilize. This a great cell mount for tripods. It swivels if needed.

$70 - great version without phone mount

$36 - versatile mid range with phone mount

SCENE SET UP - Have a shot list of what you need to cover printed out.

  1. Pay attention to the light source. Always have the sun, windows, or lights illuminating your subject. (so typically behind the camera). Don't back-light your talent or they will just show up as a black silhouette.

  2. Think of your framing. Use the rule of 3rds for interviews and wides. This basically says "Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid on the screen and put your points of interest at the intersection areas." It gives a more dynamic framing.

  3. For interviews, move your talent away from walls. This versus THIS.

  4. Shoot at an angle if possible. A scene with a bit of depth looks better. So if you have a white wall behind you.. relocate and shoot somewhere with more interesting BG. Think about angling your camera rather than straight on.

    VIDEO BEST PRACTICES:

  5. Hold phone sideways (16x9, never vertical)
  6. Set phone video to 4K @ 24fps (or 30fps...n ot 48 or 60)
  7. Use the rear phone camera (better resolution)
  8. Record for 3 seconds before and after your take (so there is pad to edit with and this allows the phone to stop shaking after you hit record)
  9. Shoot at eye level with your subject.
  10. Watch out for head room. Don't have a ton of dead space at the top of the frame, and don't cut off their head.
  11. Shoot close ups and wides of the same scene.
  12. Shoot more than you think you need.

    AUDIO BEST PRACTICES:

  13. Avoid echo rooms (large conference rooms)
  14. Avoid wind.
  15. Ask the person to speak up a little (not yell).
  16. Avoid noisy background areas (beeping trucks, people yelling, loud equipment)

Get a mini tripod/camera mount and a Bluetooth camera shutter button.

I generally start out with an ISO of 50 and have an extended shutter open for highways and car lights (6 seconds)

The others were 30 seconds.
I also make sure to have the Save in RAW option enabled and edit them in lightroom.

The bluetooth shutter button helps keep the camera stable since you don't have to tap on the screen.

Unfortunately for me, it was pretty windy last night so a lot of my shots were too blurry. I went from 141 pictures down to these 11.

You could use a tripod if you don't care about whether your movie's shot handheld or just steady, (I personally use one of these which I really enjoy)

But by stabilizer I meant something like these that can help keep your footage from getting too shaky and keep it easier to watch. The cheapest ones are around $35 which isn't bad since the other more professional ones go for $200, but I can't vouch for how effective the cheaper ones are.

As for mics, the one I use is pretty meh and I unfortunately haven't been able to use many others for Iphones, but this seems like it would be a good place to start!

You should be able to do something like combine a normal camera chest harness with a phone mount like one of these. If your chest harness is for GoPros (like most are), then you'll also need something like one of these.

This little guy with a tripod threaded holder and my cellphone.

I used these items from Amazon:

Tripod Mini Ball

Universal Smartphone Mount

Camera Extension Cable

8 ft. Lighting Rig Stand

The tripod mini ball attaches to the lighting rig stand, and the smartphone mount attaches to the ball. I expand the clip to fit the PSVR camera with its' plastic stand folded into a "]" shape and lock it into place. You can probably build something similar for cheaper but I didn't think this was too bad. The extension cable helps for more complex setups where being compact isn't necessary or isn't possible for whatever reason.

Buy these:

Use your phone.

I'll add to this, you can get a cheap phone tripod mount and a flexible tripod and carry that with you, then you can position your phone wherever you want and use it on a table, countertop, etc.

I'm planning on doing some cooking streams and this is my current plan.

AmazonBasics Lightweight Mini Tripod https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M78G2VO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_aE5izbC8YQG5Q
And https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L3B5PBI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ME5izb5G5HJEA
Are what I use, it's a tabletop tripod, but you could probably get a full sized one with the mount for around 20

u/capitaltpt · 1 pointr/essential

I recommend this one. Magnetic and flexible so you can mount it on anything available. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018UP7Z5O/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I2MW578ML7FJVK&colid=3UBC48MVWCC9F&psc=0

Might want to add this mount to make it easier to orient the phone: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L3B5PBI/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=IGE7MGOK2ZZMM&colid=3UBC48MVWCC9F&psc=0

Just bolt this directly to your pvc cap.

These are designed to screw onto the top of a camera tripod, as the tripods usually have the slide part with a small screw on it.

You just have to find a screw and bolt that will fit through the opening.
