I was using these kind of ties for some time, but then I discovered a simple bulk velcro tape roll like this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071Y3TVNT. The benefit is that you can cut the tie to be exactly one wrap around with good overlap. Yes, you need scissors to cut it to the length, but not having to make 3-4 circles around the wire is a big plus in my book -- especially when you need to re-tie when you are changing the setup. I only use these large ones with the hole that keeps it on the cable on frequently re-usable stuff (like a laptop power supply, keyboard, mouse cord, etc...) In that case the "extra effort" pays off. On the back of the rack - I am not threading each and every cable tie when I do it once a year... There is also less bulk.

It's not about being smug, it's about breaking a habit. Just because millions of people do it doesn't make it right. I know plenty of data centers that use velcro strap instead of zip ties.
It's just as easy and quick to get a roll of velcro and snip off what you need. I have done plenty of setups with this and it's just as quick, also faster to undo and swap out cables.
