Don’t feel bad - I was entirely incapable of keeping them alive (cue the less-caring-than-a-desert jokes from my husband :P) during my first several attempts. Even tho I’m pretty decent with plants in general (I think lol), I’ve only recently been able to maintain heathy/happy/thriving air plants with any consistency. I’ve been proud of keeping them happy more regularly than ever before over this past specifically, but I’m no expert.
Idk if this is blasphemy in this sub or not, but I find most air plants to be fairly fickle little dudes that can get unhappy from barely noticeable things. I had one die because I think a barely perceptible draft was hitting it the wrong way. They die if you give them water, when they seem like they need it really bad, sometimes. I had one rot from what appeared to be overwatering... before I ever even had the chance to water it. I also still have one that, no matter what I do, it never dries after watering in a remotely reasonable amount of time- I literally blow dried it on cool for half an hour last week. Several died early on because it looked like they’d gotten too much direct sunshine- but they were inside a room with shades on the windows. I’ve kept them all outside before but they seemed to struggle and become frail out there. One was randomly blown off my patio by the wind and I never found it again. I mean it’s really been a journey for me, even before this little dude in the photo ever existed!
My biggest pain in the butt adversary seems to be the humidity here. I also like to keep my house kinda cooler, which they really respond to and seem to like at night, but god forbid I forget to turn the ac down before I leave for work during the day. So, my air plants all usually seem either really happy or really confused (kinda like ‘where the hell are we!?’) lol.
I think it’s a lot of trial and error, and finding what works with that specific little air plant in the environment you live in, so your mileage may vary.
BUT, for me, this is what seems to work:
1- Buy them from good places. Only the ones I’ve ordered from growers in CA who specialize in air plants seem to thrive imo- the ones I’ve bought locally from Home Depot or wherever all had a shelf life of a few weeks or so. (The one in the photo is from Amazon but I’ve got other healthy ones for a couple of bucks and free shipping on Etsy.)
2- I keep them in sunny windowsills. Even though the light bulb terrarium and air plant holders nowadays are SUPER cute, air plants (in my experience) only really ever seem to thrive with LOTS of [surprise surprise] unimpeded air access. I only really put them in their cute lil homes/holders when people visit or I’m cleaning up the house.
3- I regularly flip them over every day or so. This way they don’t get flat on one side.
4- I rarely water them and have no luck with misting (they seem to rot easier with misting for me, but, again, its very humid where I live).
5- I bathe them very rarely and very quickly (I don’t leave them fully submerged in water- they can’t breathe like that)- once a month, maybe. I also put them on wire cookie racks out on my patio in the heat to dry them completely afterwards. I think an important part of keeping them happy is drying them fully within a reasonable amount of time and drying them as well as you possibly can.
6- I do use a fertilizer spray derived from sea kelp and made specifically for air plants. But, some people say not to do this because it’s easy to overdo. Again, ymmv.
I only fertilize them in summer when it’s super sunny out. I always only do one spritz, if any, and monthly at the most, usually when I water them.
I will say that fertilizer seems to be the ONLY thing that encourages them to blush and bloom, at least where I live [not a desert or dry zone].
6- If an air plant does have a budding little blossom, I stop watering it entirely and let it do its thing unless it looks like it’s definitely dying. Buds usually die before blooming if I water or mist the plant while they’re developing. And, if it doesn’t kill the bloom, it seems to at least slow down the flower’s growth pretty significantly.
7- If they start looking unhappy, I put them under this inexpensive lamp. They fucking love that thing. And it has championed many a comeback. BUT, it does look kinda weird science-y hooked up in my kitchen with all the air plants sprawled out underneath it.
Other than the above, I’m still figuring it out and learning how to keep them happy too. They seem to need a decent bit of continual maintenance and a hell of a lot of attention to detail. Especially if you’re trying to correct (sometimes inexplicable) issues they’re struggling with! But, ironically, they can also struggle directly because of TOO much attention/water/sunlight/air, lol. So, it’s a weird balance.
But, I really respect a picky plant. And, air plants are super rewarding if only because they’re so weird. One really cool blossom is worth every second of the trial and error. You gotta stay stubborn and experiment a little, but the whole process is kinda cool once they start poppin off and living their best life!!!
Hope this helps a little bit and best of luck! I’m sending good vibes to your air plant babies 🌱💜
EDITED for grammar/clarity and to say: I’ve only ever had really small air plants so larger/more mature ones may be a different ballgame, idk.
Nah man they’re not that bad, they’ve gotten you this far! I just meant an upgrade would just help you get more yield! Everyone on here swears by Quantum Boards but honestly just stay away from blurple lights, Mars Hydro SP-250 is a great and cheap led with white light, having the white lights really really helps when trying to examine and diagnose your babies and that’s the one I’ll be trying out in a few weeks when I can afford it! Right now I’m using a knockoff Amazon light the Phlizon 2000w Cree Cob LED , it actually pulls around 450 watts but that’s just their model lingo. It has 4 bright white cob led’s along with some other led’s and it’s honestly worked great so far, I have it on full blast hanging at the top of the tent and it hasn’t burned any seedlings and the older ones are looking great at week 6 with no light burn and they’ve stretched about half way ! Hope I can help and good luck to you!
Hi OP. My bro and I started off with one of these, and now have 3 of them and are suggesting our buddy get one for his first light.
edit: one more edit - if you have all the knowledge from your space bucket grow, and are handy with electronics then by all means go for the Alibaba QB, and report back for the rest of us newer growers on your experience! :)

Probably also on the US site. They claim it has 600 w output. Here are my observations:
Overall I can recommend it as a new grower. I have two 2x4 tents that are 5 feet tall due to a low basement, and a separate veg area for a perpetual grow. If I had gone the Quantum Board route I would be in it for 3 Quantum boards to have the same setup which seems like a huge initial outlay for a new grower.
My thoughts on Quantum Boards from browsing this sub for 7 months pretty intently:
A potential issue as a new grower specifically :
They have by far the most thought needed to be put in to get started, you will need to spend time reading about them to do it right. There are often posts here from people saying "I got my QBs now how do I put it together?" These growers surely get set up eventually and going, but as a new grower that is a lot of extra mental work at the outset.
Even just making sure you get the right products is a bit of a project. Keep in mind if you order from one of the Chinese sellers you are in for a little wait. HLG ships from the US I guess? But costs more.
Not to say "dont do QBs" but make sure you have the time to get the research right on the actual growing in addition to getting your lights correct. The amount of young sick plants posted that are dying under great QB lights because the grower doesnt know about aeration or even not to over water their plant.. or started nutes as soon as it popped out of the ground.
I know I will likely want to upgrade my lights eventually from these modular LED kits, but for now they are cheap and easy to get started with and my plants like them just fine.
Bonus, if I do want to go to a QB down the road, I can use my former flower LEDs in the veg area, so they continue to be worth the investment.
(edit to add US link and clean up formatting, happy growing)
I just bought this light and it is the best light I have owned but it's more expensive and not what I started out with.
For someone starting out I would get something like this which is 300 true watts or this which is around 260 true watts. Both are going to make your closet hotter so you may have to get an intake/exhaust fan but they will give you 10x better yield. I have grown with both of them.
I also have a few of these which will still be way better than what you have currently however these blurple lights get a lot of flack from people and weren't my personal favorite. But for $59 right now on Amazon that's a pretty good deal for 165 true watts.
Here's my first grow doing what you are doing
Here's my second grow using the lights I suggested
Edit: If you think you are going to get into growing and take it serious in the future get the light I linked first. It was around $150 after shipping and it takes some diy to put together but it will run way cooler than the other lights and is 15x better than any of the Amazon lights for $50-$100 more. If I could go back and do it again I would get rid of all the Amazon lights and spend the money on some nice quantum boards.
Your spider plant should be able to adjust quite well. They do just fine in low light.
In terms of growlights, check out this post comparing different types of growlights. The guide is aimed more at succulents but anything that works for a succulent is going to be good enough for pretty much any other plant.
Also, depending what your budget is like, Gardener's Supply has a great selection of pre-made growlight systems that work very well but they are a bit on the pricier side.
Edit: Forgot to add something. If you're talking about one of these flexible neck grow lights, I actually have one for my succulents. It has worked ok for me but in terms of succulents you have to have the lights super close to the plants (I have mine maybe half an inch above them) and I'm also pairing that with a lot of bright southern light. I definitely would not recommend them if they're going to be your main source of light.
TL;DR: see links below.
Beyond the actual science of which light is best, it really depends for many casual plant owners whether they want the light to look "decor friendly" or they want it to do a bang-up job of growing their plants. Honestly, there aren't many effective lights that look like they belong in a residence. No matter what anyone says, when it comes to grow lights, you do get what you pay for.
Below are 5 well-recommended options. I own all these (and others), having tried many entry-level grow lights. They're ordered by price, low to high, from $15 bulbs that go in ordinary lamps to an excellent entry-level grow light for about $175. The lower end work best as a supplement for natural light. The higher end will let you grow almost anything, even without a window.
Hope this helps you. Any questions, just ask. And yes, there are detailed, technical, scientific explanations for why these are better options than others; you can dive in there if you choose. Let's get to those 5 lights:

Health question time! Let me preface this one with two things: one, I'm a relative newcomer to this whole system, having only been keeping succulents for about 2-3 months at the suggestion of a friend, who recommended it as a sort of emotional relief hobby (at which it is excelling, mind); and two, this plant has seen terrible things and not all of them are my fault. This particular echeveria (?) was rescued from a beer bottle planter at a Trader Joe's in California, which it had shared with a Cotyledon tomentosa and what I *think* is a barely living Crassula capitella. Crappy soil and no drainage, of course. Then, it traveled across the country for two weeks under the care of someone whose entire knowledge of succulents consists of "they like sun, right?" so they sat in the brightest sun available, which very much fried them. This plant has been under my care for just over a month, nursed back to what I think is health.
Anyways, on to the bullet points!
I’m on mobile so sorry if the link doesn’t work: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QFPBQDR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Rz9ODbSJ0AW5F
Got these off of another post here a week or two ago, unfortunately they’re sold out at the moment but when they come back in stock I highly recommend them. Super easy to install and they’re ultra bright. So far my plants love them, one of my African violets actually started blooming a few days after I put these up. I especially love how they can all connect to each other, so I’ve got all 6 set up and connected between two different shelves and only have to use one plug in my outlet for them all.
Oh no problem! A wall of text is what I need! lol. I'm so new to this, but taking care of plants has been something I've wanted to do for quite some time, and last month I finally decided to take the plunge. Now, it's just a matter of learning everything I can to keep my plants happy and healthy.
As it stands, I have two of these lights. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PXP7DW5?pf_rd_p=183f5289-9dc0-416f-942e-e8f213ef368b&pf_rd_r=5H5Q6BZA5225BK6HQZA8
Not sure, but it looks like it says there's a 300lm output. Not sure if that's good enough, but so far the plants have been doing ok. If things don't go well in the future, I may have to consider another option when it comes to lights.
Thanks again for the tips and information! It's all more than welcome at this point!
currently using a 300W LED light from VIVOSUN and its been doing great for my 2 pepper plants 2 cannabis plants and a tomato/dill plant i have going,
but im looking into investing into another LED light, this time a 600W to add to my 4x4 tent.
Looking at a few options but im not sure if they're good or not.
vivosun 600w vivosun is reliable and great but its cost is 120$
This no name brand named wakyme is only 60$ and has a dual switch and comes with a few things, but i've never seen any on this subreddit and the reviews seem alright but im not sure.
and lastly this one, phlizon tons of reviews, seems like an older model but also comes with goodies and is only 80$ with a dual switch.
should i go with ol reliable and spend almost double without a dual switch and no goodies with it, or do some of you use these brands and know they are reliable and great to sustain my 4x4 tent with my already 300W led light which is doing great.
I recently picked up a few of these and absolutely love them: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07LG39B3M
Not hawking them, but not having to live with a purple glow all the time has been awesome, and my plants love it at least as much as the red/blues. I know a lot of people use them, but this little greenhouse / LED combo has been amazing as well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FZTKYXV
I'd personally either hold onto the old light for another use in the future...like if you want a separate veg tent. You only need about 280W of actual draw for a COB LED, but I've never had a rectangular tent, so I'm not sure if a single light that draws 300W would be good for that, or if you've be better off getting two that each draw 150W. I have two of THESE in my 4x4 and I've been happy with them. They draw 300W each and my plants do great with them. They aren't as nice as quantum boards but they are a fraction of the price and will hold me over until I want to spend the extra cash on QBs.
Edited to add: If you want to see how my plants are doing under them right now then take a look at my Grow Diary. If you click on each week, you can see progress pictures.
I am concerned that it is not enough. All of my grow lights are 30W+ and they're relatively small. You also need photo cells specifically designed for growing plants (if you're using LED). Regular LED lighting is not sufficient for proper growth because it does not emit the correct light spectrum.
Considering purchasing a clip on 30W grow light from amazon. They're less than $30 and most of them work great. I prefer the natural colors >

Or

Also, light meters for artificial lighting will often read much lower than what is recommended for growth, despite the plant growing phenomenally. As an example, I have a dryadella aviceps sitting under light that only reads 110FC, yet it is blooming like a madman. It requires 500FC at least when grown under sun. This is because artificial lighting is constant, both in the amount of light and the duration. Sunlight is less in the morning and less at night, whereas 12 hours of LED lighting is consistent in brightness throughout the entire day. Light meters are only good after you have found the proper growing intensity for plants, so you can replicate it for like species.
this grow light from Amazon was going around r/houseplants for a minute. Of course I impulse bought it. I’ve never had one but I really like it because it’s flexible with a clamp. I do believe my plants are happier. My succulents were extremely etiolated before, but now they’re growing well!
Edit: I also love the timer function and have it on the 12 hour interval
These are the ones in the pic, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073GRNGRM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_aeDADbWKEBW3P . I have them on a timer and they have been reliable. I have a mix of light needs in that little corner, but they seem to keep things happy and stable through winter. Light growth, but good color retention until spring gets warm enough for the balcony. I can only recommend them because they work for me, but I can't say I know anything about grow lights.
I have this one and it works pretty well. I can definitely see the new growing pop up quick. I usually use it one hour a day on a weekdays and 3-5 hours a day on a weekend. I like to see the progress on my plants (especially on the slow-growers), so the grow light worth buying for me.
Good luck!
Ok so here's my more detailed post like promised.
Generally I like to keep the grow room around high 70 F - low 80 F during the day and low 60 F at night with humidity around 70-75%. Most orchids and carnivorous plants love this setting.
This is my carnivorous grow area. There used to be a lot more fly traps here but since they are now in the fridge for winter dormancy, this has been turned into a nepenthes and orchids sanctuary. I take most of my pictures here simply because it has the best light. I used a fixture of 4 T5HOs Agrobite with 3 6500k and 1 2700k to cover a wider range of spectrum.
This is my display area. I like to put my blooming orchids on this stand which also is very close to my computer so I could catch the orchids fragrances occasionally. For this I use this stand and a grow light.
This is my regular phal rack. There are 3 like this one, where my non-blooming phals live (and blooming too if I run out of place at my display stand). I use this as my main light and extra supplement grow lights same as above.
Your workmate doesn't know anything about gardening then.
These are toast. Save yourself the time and heartache and start over. Someone up the comment chain said you don't need specialized grow lights but I disagree. You can get LED grow panels on Amazon for like 20 bucks. They're cool to the touch and won't burn seedlings like an incandescent or cfl light.
This is a good one: https://www.amazon.com/Osunby-Growing-Indoor-Plants-Hydroponic/dp/B075JFPLY1/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?crid=1ZZIWHRIFN0B0&keywords=led+grow+light&qid=1555523841&s=gateway&sprefix=led+grow+&sr=8-6
You want a panel like this to be sitting no more than an inch or two from the surface of the soil. As the plants grow, the light should stay at that distance from the top leaves. It should basically be almost touching the plant. Once true leaves grow in, you can start raising the light. A tomato seedling should only be an inch or so tall before it puts out it's first true leaves.
Someone recommended these on another thread and I bought one and they're AMAZING! Unbelievably bright, white light in the perfect spectrum for succulents. I ended up going back and buying a 4-pack. I mounted them above a bookshelf and my succulents are loving it!
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015YX8ZF4?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_pd_title
I've been browsing the grow light thread and thinking about getting more succulents before winter, and would like some input on which setup seems better or if you would recommend something else entirely. This adjustable growlight which has a gooseneck and clip (also comes with option for timer) or this bulb and this clamp light? I currently don't have many succulents at all (which obviously can change) so I don't need the light to cover a huge area. Should I set up a specific area to do this with shelving etc (please recommend if so) or is on top of a cedar chest on trays fine?
I'm pretty new to this and appreciate any advice I can get here.
I have one that's similar to yours (it's "1200 watt") and one that's "600 watt," running over a 4x4 scrog. I am a beginner grower, and about 2 weeks from harvest on my 2nd indoor grow. Both cycles went well, and produced some really great bud, but I think the lights were the weakest point in my whole setup. Biggest issue I've seen is the power and penetration of the lights.
Also, the two lights that I have perform differently. This one is smaller, but plants seem to like it better. This is the larger one I have(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JLKUA2W/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Both are OK, I mean they are cheap so I can't really complain. If I can get a few more grows out of them, I'll be happy.
Also, I augment with 5-6 CFL bulbs to get edges and other shaded areas.
I have this in two foot and 4 foot. Highly recommended. All my plants are nice and vibrant and not etiolated at all.
And I also have this for quarantine plants and at work for my desk plant. Works great and is dimmable, and each light can be turned on individually or together. Also has a few built in timers.
Also, as an aside, when you do get your cactus a light make sure you acclimate it. Just like us, cactuses sunburn.
Hi OP! I just ordered a few of these today, have heard good things about them and they have some pretty solid reviews! From what I understand they fit into normal bulb sockets too which is convenient. I’m sorry I can’t comment yet on how well they work, but hopefully this helps!

I see, I can sell the one I have actually since my cousin already told me to pick one extra one for him.
I haven't bought the tent yet so...
Which light would you buy for a 4x4x7?
Or I could also get this tent since it is a great price https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H9N29SC/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 as opposed to the 4x4 vivosun I was thinking
Something like this would be fine I guess: https://www.amazon.com/VIPARSPECTRA-Dimmable-PAR1200-1200W-Light/dp/B01N7CEW5Q/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1519244908&sr=8-4&keywords=Viparspectra+PAR1200+Dimmable+LED+Grow+Light
My main concern is heat generated by the light and Energy consumption.
Thanks for your help btw
The one I got was pretty cheap but works suprisingly well, I'd definitely recommend it! It's this one, it's nice to be able to clamp it to a desk or windowsill so you don't have to deal with hanging anything.
lol I linked them above :
Monios-L T8 LED Grow Light 2FT, 144W(6×24W) High Output Plant Grow Light Strip, Full Spectrum Sunlight Replacement with High PAR for Indoor Plant, 6-Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QFPBQDR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZfqJDbVB0P29V
These ones are the best ones I’ve found. Doesn’t make your space look like you’re obviously growing weed since it’s white light lol and doesn’t give off a ton of heat which burns my plants. Also I like that the bulbs are curved and have 3 led strips per light so I have more versatility in my set up.
So the one you see on the top is this one:
Winjoy Grow Light, 30W LED Grow... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JLJFWNY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
But my plants don’t love it, they kind of put up with it. They seem to do better with this light but they only come with two heads and the cart needs three for good coverage.
Grow Light, Ankace [2018 Upgraded... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H57K565?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
The succs stress better with this second light than they do with the first one too! The third row I have this lamp for my light hogs.
50W LED Grow Light,Growstar... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LF21378?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I only keep one side on at a time because I’m afraid to melt my plants but I just got this one and am a novice user!
Hope this helps you decide on one! I know how tedious it is to pick some lamps out, especially online.
The soil is FoxFarm Ocean Forest.
I've been feeding them general organics lineup for every week. Once a week.
One light is advertised at "600w" but surely it's not able to live up to that for only $90 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078XHHVKZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_TF1zCbVM5FMQZ
I'm using that one for the Ak-49 auto and Peppermint Kush.
The viparspectra is being used for the Blue DREAM'MATIC and the Super Lemon Haze https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076JBY3J8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_kJ1zCb1C0NW20
I have the light for the Blue DREAM'MATIC & SLH about 6-8 inches away and it's not burning the plants. The other one is bright so it sits about 10-12 inches away. Once they start flowering, I'll move them up more.
Most of the info you'll find online for indoor grow bulbs will partain to pot (weed) growing. If it's legal where you are, I say go for it but ordering lights off of some sights can get you on a list of sorts that maybe you don't want to be on lol.
These are fairly cheap cfl's and I reccomend these types over the longer larger u shaped tube cfls. https://www.amazon.com/Hydroponic-Full-Spectrum-Light-5500K/dp/B005P29K1S
I say this because I've not had good luck or life span out of the others, but with smaller ones like these I've had great success.
But here's some L.E.D. types that you may be able to afford that last much longer
https://www.amazon.com/Lights-Spectrum-Indoor-Succulents-Seedling/dp/B07FKF6BT4
These links ought to get you started at looking at some options. Hell, I just was super shocked at how much the price tags have gone down in the last 3 years since I bought some for myself! Lol... Now I'm gonna have to do some reinvesting also!
I actually use these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01B68F6U8/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522557091&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=led+feit+grow+light&dpPl=1&dpID=41iAKh8dalL&ref=plSrch
I have two right now. One on each shelf that I use. I was told that they may not be enough light, that my plants would either etiolate or do nothing at all. However, I think my plants are doing rather well. I’ve had some echeverias for about five weeks now under them and am seeing a lot of new growth, great change in color, and no etiolation so far. Things may change down the road but I have no complaints as of right now.
My top shelf has all of my different echeverias so I hung the light pretty close to the plants. Maybe three inches away.
My bottom shelf has a larger jade, some haworthias, a gasteria, a Crassula, and a fairy castle cactus. All of these are naturally green and aren’t AS light needy as some of the purple and pink echeverias. So the light on this shelf is anywhere between 2-5 inches away depending on the size of the plant.
The lights emit little to no heat and haven’t burned any of my babies.
This amazon link is a bit expensive but I had a few amazon gift cards so that’s where I decided to purchase them. However, you can find them at Home Depot for $30.
Good luck!
Edit: I leave my lights on for 13 hours a day.
If you look on Amazon there are LOTS AND LOTS of grow lights. I have bought several. I have had good luck with the LED grow lights. They are more energy efficient and the plants seem to do well. If you get some just make sure they are FULL SPECTRUM.
You can also get flourescent T5 grow lights. They do fine but just use more energy. They also tend to run hotter so be aware of how close they are to your plants so they don't burn.
Here's some links to check out.

here’s the fanny pack! I’ll also add that pretty much everything I own is chartreuse. It’s my jam.
And yes! I have two types of grow lights for my plants.
This onemy plants seem to really love just for the coverage it allows.
And I have two of these on another cabinet that do all right but aren’t as powerful. I like them because they have clips and are usb powered so I can save space on plugs with a dual port brick.
I’d say 2:1 perlite:miracle grow cactus mix for my Haworthias. I honestly just kinda winged(wung?) it and I think maybe I have too much perlite and that’s why roots are taking ages. But definitely heavier on perlite for them. here is the one I have and honestly the only reason I have it still is for rerooting, and I don’t even know if I’m imagining things or it actually be like that 😂
Maybe not quite what you are looking for, but I wanted to expand my MiracleGro Aerogarden, so I specced out what it would take to build my own, and its fairly cheap. The only functionality I lose is the auto turn on/off light. I was growing Thai Basil, Italian Basil, Dill, Thyme, Parsley. Best part is it grows indoors, year round.
I add water every 3-4 days, and nutrient every 2 weeks.

I've been looking at this COB from Phlizon: https://www.amazon.com/Phlizon-Spectrum-Growing-Monitor-Adjustable/dp/B07MZ1QHKC/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Phlizon+CREE+Cob+Series+2000W&qid=1573343801&s=lawn-garden&smid=AH440WDUIAWYA&sr=1-4
ASSUMING the reviews are legit, some of the reviews say its identical to the Optic COB lights. Although with that being said, SUPPOSEDLY the QB lights are still the best. However, unless you have a huge budget, you'll have to rely on buying them from Alibaba/China. What scares me about that is slow shipping, and no fast support/returns/replacement compared to if you buy an item that is Fullfilled by Amazon. Out of everything that I've shopped around for when creating my build, the most difficult decision is the lighting because everyone has their own opinions, and the lighting that is supposedly the best of the best is insanely expensive.
I have been using these lights with very good success in a mini vegetable setup.

Some of the best bang for the buck out there for lights.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H9W1TSZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This works great when supplemented with CFL light or other LED, My planty is doing great. Hope your plants a girl.
Slow on the game, but here’s an affordable LED system. I’ve used it and it has worked great for my plants. Note that the plants live in a terrarium next to an east-facing window at around 5000 ft elevation, so I do have some natural lighting. But one of my violets has been blooming for nearly a year now after adding the LEDs. The light does not get hot either.

Just wanted a realistic time frame Until it gets here. Its my first grow and i want the best for my baby. I appreciate your help bro.
We haven't found ones we particularly like at our house since we're always switching up our ~grand vision~ for our plants, lol. This one was the darling of r/houseplants for a while. Definitely search here, r/houseplants, r/succulents, or even r/plants for more suggestions. Threads about them pop up all the time.
They're these guys: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FZTKYXV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
An absolute steal. As you can see, they're super pink. I'm sure our neighbors are wonder what exactly we're growing at this point! The orchids are going bonkers now! I have nothing but good things to say about these lights. They're incredibly lightweight. I did zip ties on the wire shelves and the included contact strips for the walls. You can rig multiple lights together, or do individual lights. The price was pretty much perfect. I ordered two boxes (12 lights total) and still have two lights left (looking for the right spot).
I'm assuming monthly billing and about 13ct/kWh electricity price. This means they suddenly started using about 3270kWh more per month, which translates to an average of 4.4 kW steady consumption. Now what can we do with 4.4 kW? We can power at least 3 of these and another 700w model next to it, giving us a 57 sq foot weed plantation. According to this site 3000 kWh will get you about a pound of product, worth somewhere between 4000 and 5000 dollars on the street. Since they are already behind on the rent, i would assume they are not crypto mining, since it has a huge upfront cost, and even at 4.4 kW i'd say it's too small-scale to really turn a profit. On the slightly less nefarious side, it could also be that they tried to safe on gas cost and switched to an electric space heater, which can run into the kW, but would probably not run constantly. I was gonna mention a short, but a short of this size ~36A (assuming 120V) would almost certainly trip a breaker, and if it doesn't it would probably set the house on fire. However, maybe they just really like taking saunas or maybe they're making beer. In conclusion: This is a rather large spike in electricity usage, and can get you a lot of money if used for weed, but could also be attributed to less illegal purposes, and I believe in the inherent good of all people (and that weed should be legalized) so I wouldn't jump to conclusions if I were you. Maybe just go talk to them, go like "hey I noticed your electricity bill has jumped, just came to check if everything is alright, if there's no shorts etc."
This site is good and have some real great range of lights. Personally Im a fan of this type of design, version 1, more expensive and stronger light with 96W , version 2, slightly smaller size, price and light with 65W. Or you could go with the more traditional shop light style, 1 tube is 30W. If you want something cheaper then this one from amazon looks okay at 22W.

LED lights are more expensive to buy but much cheaper to run in the long run (electricity bill). Saw you asking about the energy bill, use this site or one of many similar to check out how much it would increase. Just put the watts in the Power Consumption (the numbers in bold above), many use grow lights for 16 hours each day so put 16 hours and then how much your electricity cost is.
i just received this one a few days ago. so im not sure how well it's working yet. but i do enjoy the large clip, long lights and all of the functions (ie like automatic 6 dimmer options, 3,6,12 hr timer, and being able to turn on one two or three lights). so far it is very worth the money!

It’s these! I absolutely love them. I’ve only been using them for about a week and I’ve had new growth in my Hindu rope, crotons, Zebra plant and my peace lily is blooming. I swear it’s because of these lights. I have them on during the day in a room that has a north facing window, my monstera soaks up that sun but my others get these lights :)
Sorry, I didn't mean that brand wasn't important. I meant I'm not brand biased and open to any suggestions. But yes, I'll share with you the links to the lights I was considering.

So I checked the "1000W" and it is showing 55.1 at the wall with only the "veg" turned up to 100%. Not sure how it is doing yet because it is the new one in the second tent. The other one I have to move a few things around to get back to the outlet and cannot do that at the moment. I will try to remember to get around to it though.

Here it the link for the "1000W" on the second tent that I was able to measure.

Still new to all of this and despite the initial planning I still have much to learn.

These are the lights I️ use.
This is the light that I️ like best. $30 from Amazon. It doesn’t put off very much heat.
This is the one that is not so good. $25 from Amazon.
Thanks for the detailed response! So if my understanding is correct if I went with potting soil in a small pot would I use the hydroponic nutrients instead of water when "watering" or use both? Would that then replace the need for fertilizer as well? As for lighting would a cheap grow light like this work? After a fair amount of research I am still unsure about what would be a good grow light for the plant on a budget.
I do! It's wonderful (link here). I actually had these colors when I had a patio outside last year as well. I'm in a good location for succulents.
I had the same problem! I tried lights lights like that and they were terrible! ...then I bought two of these...then two more! They give color to my succulents and all my plants love them! They also have a much longer range than other bulbs I’ve tried!

Good luck!!!
All the comments so far are good choices, but this shelf would look neater with some t5 fixtures mounted under the bottom each shelf. I haven't used any yet so I don't have a recommendation but I found this assortment for you to get an idea of what they are... https://growershouse.com/t5-fluorescent-grow-light-bulb-and-fixtures#!
Or try the flat panel type of led:

I'd use some spacers and mount them directly under each shelf, making sure it has a few inches of breathing room for heat dissipation.
I’ve been using this one for the past year, and have had great success with it
It’s actually one of the small 45W led panels from Amazon :) https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B075JFPLY1/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I moved the panel closer to my plants (about 4 inches away) and I’ve kept it on for 12+ hours, and they have been really happy
Sometimes you just have to get creative. I have most of my plants on 2 console tables. But during the day when I'm at work, the ones that need extra light sit under a grow light that I attached under my console tables with some cheap Command Hooks. I posted a pic of the set up a little while ago here: https://www.reddit.com/r/houseplants/comments/9b3cyf/check_out_my_cloudy_daywinter_set_up/
I use these grow lights https://www.amazon.com/Feit-74302-Blue-Spectrum-Light/dp/B01B68F6U8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1538502436&sr=8-3&keywords=feit+2%27+LED. They're very light weight and easy to mount. My plants have been flourishing with them. When I get home from work, I put the plants back in their usual spot, and tuck the lights away. Sometimes I just leave the plants where they are and simply shut the lights off. This gives them a good 8-10 hrs under the lights.
It wouldn't be too difficult for you to find something that could subtly mount under your shelves or fireplace mantle. You'll just need to hunt around. I'd also recommend going the LED route if you're mounting lights directly under anything, as they won't give off heat which could damage whatever they're mounted to.
Yeah, small scale like that, put $15-20 into something like this, or a simple desk/clip lamp with cfl would work.
https://www.amazon.com/Upgraded-Dimmable-Spectrum-Adjustable-Gooseneck/dp/B07PXP7DW5
Will do the job for starting seedlings for an outdoor grow, make sure to slowly harden them to sunlight during transition.
my partner got me this light panel the other day. it's about 6 inches (give or take!) away from my plants. i've had it for about two days, so i can't give any feedback. but if someone more knowledgeable than me can give any advice i would love to hear it!
I intend to cover it with more of the black walnut that's used above, but in a Japanese shoji lamp-style, so there will be a lamp at the bottom.
Basics of the setup:
The grow area is physically separate from the reservoir so I can detach and clean it. Some have critiqued the design for not being true NFT, saying that water remains in the system; and also because the channels are not square. So there are surely design improvements that can be made.
The wood is black walnut that I coated in teak oil; and are slid onto brackets I made so that (in case of leakage) I can pull them right off without unscrewing anything.
These aren’t the same lights, but if you’re looking for specific grow lights to chain together like this, I can recommend these: [6-Pack] LED Grow Light Strips for Plants 2FT, 60W (6 x 10W) t5 High Output Integrated Fixture Extendable 24 Inches Grow Lights for Greenhouse, Plant Grow Shelf, Easy Installation https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FZTKYXV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_h-pJDbD7RGXM3

I found this one in particular very useful since it has an auto off AND auto on function. Since it automatically turns on I didn't have to worry about it while gone on vacation.
I only mist and occasionally water with a few drops of water using a pipette. No pesticide.
Goodluck!
Sure! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JLJFWNY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Z8ArDbSVTE5QE Some of the reviews say the lights die pretty fast like within a few months so take caution. I have only had these lights for a little less than two weeks. Its not a very strong light so with succulents and other sun loving plants I keep the light about 2 inches away.

Price went up to $27 overnight evidently. I paid $19.99 last night! I chose this one because it has a clamp to clip onto my table, 60W vs most others with 30W, and 3 wand arms that will work perfectly for me because I use a corner area for my plants. This will fan out perfectly. Also has timers and color modes. I don’t know much about the different light modes, but plan on doin some in depth research and experimentation!
will look into coco coir for sure. I was using the dirty dozen nutrients, which specific nutes do you recommend? I kept forgetting what week I was on in the schedule for selected nutrients to add and kept guessing on the week messing up a ton I'm sure. The manufacturer says "comparable brightness as a 100W incandescent" https://www.amazon.com/100W-LED-Grow-Light-Bulb/dp/B07H9W1TSZ/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=haus%2Bbright%2BLEd%2Blight&qid=1568870198&s=gateway&sr=8-1&th=1
Yes, Id recommend a grow light. I use these guys. They're fairly cheap, dont take tons of energy, the leds dont get hot, and provide the proper light range for succulents.
Those bulbs aren't going to be enough and I'm not sure anything you put in the vanity is going to work as the bulbs are 3 feet away when they should only be a few inches away and they are pointing out horizontal, not down directly at the plants. As for hanging the lights either get a clip on work light socket or for the self contained ones, just put and eye hook in a ceiling stud and hang it from wire or chain. I'm not sure you're really grasping how much light these need. Both Vandas and Den phals can take as much as full outdoor sun and need quite bright light to perform well. They aren't low light plants like phals. I posted some other options below that would be white light. For the second light, you'd want the 45 watt version , not the 14 watt. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015YX8ZF4/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1491063709&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=grow+light+white&dpPl=1&dpID=514VugAmA5L&ref=plSrch

Maybe try something like this or this or this!! :)
So something like this light, that uses white LEDs would likely be better for my use case?
It gets a lot of light- it's positioned almost directly under my powerful white LED light (this isn't the exact model of light I have, but it's pretty much the same)
When the E. raindrops is outside during the summer, it needs to be in full sunlight for most of the day, or the bumps will not form or get bigger. You can see in the picture that some of the leaves near the center don't have bumps or have very small bumps- this is because the plant has only just been exposed to the higher power LED light after a long period of having suboptimal lighting.
VivoSun 600w.
I had temp and humidity issues this last run, I'm hoping my fall attempt will go better.
I'm definitely going to give that greenhouse a shot and put it on my heat pad. So one more question if you don't mind... Would a grow-light like this one work for a greenhouse this size or would I need something bigger?
A few years ago (somewhat recently) it was discovered that plants mostly only use the red and blue wavelengths of light.
So, when you use white lights on a plant, you have to use really bright, high-powered lights because the plant is only using these two narrow bands of the whole visible spectrum that the light is putting out.
Instead, by using a combination of red and blue LEDs, you deliver only the colors of light that the plant is going to use, and you can use less power.
I'm a big fan of this style: https://www.amazon.com/100W-LED-Grow-Light-Bulb/dp/B07H9W1TSZ/ref=sr_1_35?keywords=plant+light&qid=1566596546&s=lawn-garden&sr=1-35

I'm def happy with how it turned out. My second build and my favorite part is the ability to reverse the fans. Could turn them all into charcoal filters if the smell becomes an issue. So far, just one set of fans with activated charcoal is doing it. If i were to do it over, I'd probably skip the sidelights. It's a little overkill - there's 150w pulling in 2.5 sq ft right now

I'm in NY and today I just noticed that my plants are seeeriously stretching. I rushed and bought this grow light. I think the supplemental artificial light will be enough!
Now I'm going to behead a bunch of my succs and give them to a friend who just started up her garden!
Feit makes a good one that is white
They're a reputable brand and I'd trust it more than the ones that come from China to not fail and/or catch on fire.
It's not super powerful but it has worked well enough for me so far as a supplement during winter months.
Alright, thank you!
Regarding the second, I got it a few weeks ago, but it had clearly been shedding leaves before I bought it. How do you know it didn't have enough light?
Regarding light, since it appears all of my plants are on the verge from dieing due to lack of sunlight, I apparently need to buy a grow light. Would this work, put over rows of these plants, and how many should be going over head plant and how many hours a day should they be on for?

I have it on a lamp timer, it comes on at 6am and turns off at 10pm.
This is the light - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FKF6BT4
Its a little flimsy, but it seems to work well enough.
The HLG 550 v2 is, but that seems to be the only one, and that's for a 4x4 - 5x5 tent. The Mean Well driver is for the rest, but not the main PCB.
The Spiderfarm SF lights seem very similar to the QBs (though I haven't used one), and appear to be UL / ETL certified.
I don't think any of the QB-style boards people order on alibaba are.
Sure thing! I used this and I keep it just a few inches above the plants. Around 5-6” above them.
Looking for some input on set up specifically for my lighting plan.

Or if you can maybe lead me towards a few plug n play options!
That light you posted has a ton of red in it and isn't ideal for veg you need something with 3,500-4,000K full spectrum diodes.
This would be a lot better.

I'm wondering if my Tulsi Basil plant is too close to the light. Some of the leaves are getting dried and crumpled and brown looking. I'm not sure why, but thinking it's the ought. It is a this 45w LED grow light and the top of the plant is about 10 or 12 inches away from the light. Can anyone identify if the leaves are getting light burned?
I’m using these Feit lights from Amazon!

Generally even with southern sun the plants will need to be cut back (I live in Minnesota, USA). There are affordable lights these days. I just bought this one: Osunby LED Grow Light 45W UV IR Growing Lamp for Indoor Plants Hydroponic Plant Grow Light https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075JFPLY1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_ecyZWPQDahT6C. Only 45W. I’m using it for seedlings and it’s been working well.

Alrighty. Try this:

On mobile, hope this works correctly. This is what we use for seedlings: Light and mat
I want to build an indoor basement grow room so we can grow throughout the winter but that requires serious lighting, temp, and air control.
I would just pluck the dead leaves off and see how it does. My office avocado tree is now 4' tall and a second one is growing almost an inch a day. Add a grow light for best results.
That is an expensive way to light a tray, IMHO. A cheap $10 analog timer will automate that for you (granted, no remote control)
As far as how well, that depends on all the sciency stuff about par and lumens and all that. I'll just say there are an array of HUE lights and one might work and another might not. You could get a cheap set of LED lights and put them on a timer and have all the light you need for $50 (with the timer)
To get you by, you could try the HUE and see if the plants get leggy. I'd suggest having a backup regardless and as long as you're buying a backup just do that first and don't mess with the HUE bulbs.

I've used these (and other similar ones) - this particular item also offers a $10 digital timer as an option:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075JFPLY1/
That 1500W would grow indoor fruit and veg. It doesn't really draw 1500W rather it is an equivalent to I believe HPS. I would go for a 3500K-4000K rather than the blurple. Depending on how much you want to spend, check out this : Spider Farm LED
