Let's get some neutrals in that room:

  1. BEHR #PWN-67 Nurture - It's like a soft grayish blue. Really pleasing to the eyes and calming.

  2. BEHR #730B-4 Winter Cocoa - This taupey color looks like it would work well with that gray-blue.

Having neutrals allows you to be more creative in your decorating. I don't think you can go wrong with any neutrals.

    Now...

    Let's change out those curtains!

Keeping in mind that you're a guy, I refrained from linking in flowery curtains. But I did choose more than one. I hope one of them fits your personality:

I ordered this one off amazon this time last year:

VINGLI Aluminum Solar Swimming Inground Pool Cover Reel Set, Up to 18-Feet Wide x 40-Feet Length https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MDLU2GG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ji0nDbESGKB8Z

Has worked great so far. It was a bit of a pain to put together, but has held together well. Even the straps all stick still, even after falling into the pool during high winds! It’s easy to wind up as long as you do it slowly so it rolls evenly. Keeps the pool much warmer and noticeably stops evaporation.

Shock Alert

This is pretty much exactly what you’re talking about. We have two of these at the marina I work at and they work pretty well although they do wear out after a couple of years however we use ours to test every boat in the harbour I’d imagine just for personal use they’d probably last a lot longer.

I have one of these Critter Skimmers in my pool. It works great for saving bugs and small animals from the skimmer. The make several sizes as well as a round version... http://amzn.com/B003G30FJE/?tag=3feetunder-20

I have had this one for three seasons now: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01C4JSTES/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_QZrADbCGESHZJ

20x40 pool with Rocky's Rollers, even my wife can pull the cover off by herself. It's still in good shape and I can get at least one more season out of it.

You might want to get a critter-safe skimmer cover.

There's also this wonderful invention that keeps frogs from making themselves into soup in your filter!

you could try these
And/ or a solar water heater. These are just the first products I found in a quick search, not necessarily recommending them as I haven't done any research

And get enough water tubes to go around the perimeter. Get a bigger cover than you think you will need.

This is not a safety cover, make sure no kids find there way onto it.

But they can still fall in the deep end. I have lived in Florida all my life and I have been around thousands of different pools and never have I seen someone try to reduce the depth of a pool. I have also have done pool maintenance and water testing for a large water park, and before that was a lifeguard. The stuff you put on the bottom will probably fall apart and make cleaning impossible. It could also become dangerous as the kid could get caught on the cheaply made false bottom. Also plastic and PVC is slippery.

The only way you care really reduce the depth is to call a licensed pool company. They will have to drain the pool and redo the bottom correctly. This will cost thousands of dollars and basically would be a waste of money. Any company would look at you and say WTF.

Usually people buy a pool fence for the pool. Here is one from amazon for an example http://www.amazon.com/GLI-4-Feet-12-Feet-Safety-In-Ground/dp/B004VQE1DG/ref=sr_1_2?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1376502750&sr=1-2&keywords=child+pool+fence

Overall I really think trying to reduce the depth is really the wrong approach here.
