I went last year for the first time since about 2002. To put it lightly, I was scared.

It turns out that my fear of dentists for the previous 16 years was a solid and effective motivator for me to take very good care of my teeth. No cavities. I waited until AFTER the cleaning to tell them how long it had been, and they said it looked like I had been getting cleanings every 6 months. Now, whenever I go in every 6 months, they tell me I consistently have the cleanest teeth of any of their clients (maybe they are lying to make me feel good).

My regimen for the last 17 years:

u/Warfrog · 3 pointsr/Dentistry

If you are concerned, I'd recommend a good starting point is:

  1. Floss at least once daily or use inter dental brushes: https://www.amazon.com/TePe-Interdental-Brush-Pink-0-4mm/dp/B001AI8ARQ/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_194_img_2/137-1347916-6832425?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MKFPREV4QY3GB02TCJG1
  2. Clean your teeth with a round head electric toothbrush with a flossing head https://www.amazon.com/Electric-Rechargeable-Toothbrush-Automatic-Precision/dp/B01AKGRP92/ref=sr_1_9_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1540899352&sr=8-9&keywords=oral%2Bb%2Belectric%2Btoothbrush&th=1
  3. Mouth wash with peroxyl https://www.amazon.com/Colgate-Peroxyl-Mouth-Sore-Rinse/dp/B00WOSEKP2/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1540899406&sr=8-3&keywords=peroxyl

Do it in this order. Your gums might bleed a lot the first few times you do it, but after a few days you should notice a VAST improvement.

Eat only 3 meals a day, and try to avoid all carbohydrate and sugar in between. Cheese and bread, carrot sticks etc, tea coffee, water (without sugar, no juice etc) for snacks are ideal.

Save up for a reputable dentist to make sure you don't have any cavities growing under the surface.

Cant give you any advice regarding dental care in the US, but if you need any more advice, happy to reply to your PM's.

ugh I wish the limit was a little more because I love this case and this one. I have this one on my phone right now, not sure if youd like it but its amazing. Maybe youd like more of a case like this. this one is a little over but its absolutely adorable. If you don't want to spend the extra I had one like this for my Ipod and it took such a beating before it finally broke 2 years later and there wasn't a scratch on my ipod.
If I win I'd love this case cause I'm also a huge walking dead fan

I use a makeup bag, but something like a travel bag or a shaving bag for men might work better for you. Also, I just got this for Christmas, and it is one of the greatest things I've ever received. I hope this link works. Edit: They come in all different colors.

  • Gloridea electric toothbrush for $18. It's like a better Philips Sonicare: lighter, smaller, more handsome, and a third of the price. It charges via USB rather than a charging base, and the battery lasts 1–2 months.
  • Cheap folding straw hat covered with mylar for $2. A strange and wonderful mix of the traditional and futuristic: woven natural straw fibers coated with lightweight waterproof mylar. Super dorky but highly functional; I get lots of compliments. It is available on Amazon, but without the mylar coating, which loses its ability as a rain hat.
  • Yes4All Lightweight Camping Hammock for $10 (now $15). The fancier, more expensive travel hammocks I've seen are even slightly larger. This one rolls to the size of a large burrito. Replace the include rope with a high quality lightweight climbing rope. Perfect for a nap while waiting for those 4am trains.

Thank you... It makes me feel better that you guys think I can maintain it. I guess it is just pretty scary to basically be told I have an incurable disease..!

I think I've already improved my flossing but I will make sure. Electric toothbrush is a good idea that I probably should have already done by now. I'll get one soon. Thinking of the Philips Sonicare 5100 because it specifically says for gum health. The fancier ones seem like they have extra features I don't really need lol. Thanks again.

I was told I had a receding gum line and would need grafts too. I got an electric toothbrush and haven't had the problem since! An electric toothbrush is also good because it helps you brush your teeth for long enough, and it typically does a better job of brushing teeth than we might do on our own (we miss spots, brush too hard, etc).

I have an Oral B brush I really like. It came with a rechargeable base and a little clock that counts down my 2 min brush time and tells me when to switch to a different part of my mouth.

Get a small, soft round brush head; those work the best. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006ANDK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I personally enjoy my brightline bag but I commute so I don’t pack food, that’s what per diem is for.

I’d recommend a Microsoft surface over a laptop. I’d get a hard mousepad to lay over everything in your bag. When your bag goes vertical it’ll help keep everything slightly in order also.

I'm a few inches taller than you and I have these in medium petite. They fit perfectly and that huge pocket works for my stethoscope. Then I use a shirt like this for everything else I need. I fit an astounding amount of items on my person at any given time and I have yet to lose something. I keep everything I'll need for clinicals/lab in a bag like this when I'm not using it. I throw the bag in my backpack the night before so I don't forget it and I load up my pockets when I get to the hospital.

u/anotherNewHandle · 2 pointsr/Dentistry

I'm not a dentist, but an electric toothbrush changed my life. I have this. It's very affordable and the replacement heads are very affordable. I definitely like the sonic brushes more than the oscillating heads, but I know some dentists recommend the round, oscillating heads. Either way, you won't regret getting one. And try the dentec floss picks!

u/abituntangled · 13 pointsr/financialindependence

Sonicare

This was recommended by our dentist, and we've had it for about 2 years without any problems. I find the electric brushing considerably more effective (i.e: "that clean feeling") than manual brushing.

Supposedly, I also have less plaque. Bonus

I know a lot of people are worried if they’ve never gone or if it’s been a long time that they’ll get judged. I personally view a situation like this as more “thank goodness you’re here” and not “why didn’t you come sooner”.

Also if you’re worried about cost most offices will work a payment plan or have resources to help you pay over time.

Let them know upfront that it’s your first time and you’d like some patience and extra explaining for the process.

If there’s a lot of buildup, a cleaning may take multiple visits. Your first visit might even just be an exam and X-rays.

Edit: Under 16 you’ll likely need a parent or guardian with you to consent for your care.

Edit #2, often high end electric toothbrushes will have a cheap model like this sonicare. It does the same action but uses a much cheaper power source and isn’t rechargeable. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00NL2AOPU/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1519228374&sr=8-2&keywords=sonicare+battery+operated+toothbrush&dpPl=1&dpID=21FAoBDkz5L&ref=plSrch

Please note this will not remove any hard deposit on your teeth, you will need to visit a dentist for that.

Does anyone know of any major differences between "Flexcare" and "Flexcare Platinum" models?

It is funny to me because two Flexcare handles come out to $160 with DiamondClean brush heads, travel cases and all the good stuff. You can get them even cheaper at Costco $120

Meanwhile the Flexcare Platinum is only 1 handle, does not come with DiamondClean brushes or UV sanitizer and all the other goodies and costs $160 for one brush.

Is handle really that different? The only difference I see is the "sensitive mode" with a pressure sensor that reduces aggressive brushing and a newer design?

Is it really worth paying for this newer Flexcare Platinum model that costs more than 2 brushes of greater value?

Am I missing something? Are there any Sonicare experts here?

What would help me with some self care would be new brush heads for mine and my husband's toothbrushes. Ours are wearing out and we do not have the funds to replace them.

Do you think this will work? I just spent my vape budget, but would like to try something

u/whatmichaelsays · 5 pointsr/unitedkingdom

Yes and no.

There are two ways to show a discount. One is against the "RRP", and the other is against a previous selling price. To show a 'discount' against the latter, the item has to have been on sale at the higher price for at least 28 days (plus some other minor conditions).

But what you don't have to show is that the item may have been cheaper than the sale price previously.

Take this electric toothbrush on Amazon. It's currently advertised at £29.98 - a 63% discount on an RRP of £80.

But look at the price history. Firstly, the most that said toothbrush has been sold on Amazon for is £69.99, not £80, and that was back in 2014. Secondly, it was actually cheaper than today's Black Friday price for a period in late 2016 to early 2017.

In other words, it's not a bargain in any sense of the word. It hasn't been worth anywhere near the RRP for four years.

My thoughts were that the battery would be larger on the razor, but the difference in charge is massive so seems strange to me.

Good point about the toothbrush being stored on the charger, I don't have a power outlet in my bathroom, so I have to charge in the bedroom so only charge it when it's getting low. Also it was my understanding that if something is constantly on charge it affects the battery life over time. Maybe this isn't the case with newer devices.

I brush twice a day and my toothbrush is 18 months old, this is the one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Oral-B-PRO-2000-CrossAction-Rechargeable/dp/B00K2U5XFK/ref=sr_1_7_s_it?s=drugstore&ie=UTF8&qid=1520268119&sr=1-7&keywords=oral+b

Also those toothbrush bristle head refills are rip-offs.
http://www.amazon.com/Oral-B-Sensitive-Extra-Soft-Brush-heads/dp/B00006ANDK

when i go the pharmacy 3 heads cost more then 3 whole new brushes
(Same with razor head refills)
