(had to split this into 2 parts)

PART 1

So you're struggling with taking forever to make decisions, and then probably second guessing yourself whenever you do make a choice.

Boy have I been there. My family used to want to murder me for how long I would take to pick a movie to rent at Blockbuster when I was a kid.

And I carried that trait with me for a long time. I was the kind of person who would read EVERY Amazon review of every thing I wanted to buy and then cross reference ten different websites just trying to pick out a freaking rice cooker.

Another thing you mentioned is how you kick yourself for not spending your free time working on your passion projects but then when that time comes, you just waste it away on video games, Netflix, Youtube, Reddit, etc.

Been there too! Love it! Hate it! Hate myself! Love the shows!

So what can you do?

I'm going to throw a lot of information at you at once here. What I want you to do is take each section and work on it for 2 weeks before moving onto the next one. TRUST ME. Taking thing slow is so much better than trying to fix everything at once. Imagine if you had just written 1 page a day for the past year. You'd have a damn book. But are you going to stop what you're doing right now and write 1 page? No. Why not? Because you haven't created that habit yet. You're thinking "big fucking deal, one page. One page gets me nowhere". TRUE. But one page a day 365 days in a row gets you Harry Potter.

(insert image of that guy tapping his head with that "Uh huh, ain't I smart" face)

So remember, take this slow. Work on each thing for 2 weeks before moving on.

FIRST, the set up. Go to Amazon and invest in this $15 dry erase board. Got a little extra money? Then buy a 4 foot by 3 foot board. It'll make things easier. (But if you're not buying the one I'm linking to then you only have 5 minutes to find a board and buy it. Start a timer now)

https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Markes-Assorted-Colors-Fridge/dp/B0186B46CM/ref=sr_1_5?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1523593206&sr=1-5&keywords=dry+erase+board

This board is going to be your tracking system. You're gonna draw a calendar on there and you'll number the days (starting with today or whenever you get the board) and you're going to start making a check on the days when you complete your habit. At the end of each 14 day challenge you'll just write down how many out of 14 you got.

Each cycle (2 weeks) you'll try to do better and better. So if the first cycle you get 4 out of 14 checks, next cycle try to get 8 out of 14 (Here's a little secret, you'll probably be hitting 14 out of 14 by the end of the month.)

Simple as that. Now lets begin with the tasks. I'm just gonna target each thing you mentioned in your comment. Feel free to take what I saw and cater it to your needs because you know you better than I do.

PART 1: STOP AGONIZING OVER DECISIONS: Ever hear of analysis paralysis? Google that shit. You got it. Choices suck. We have way too many choices in our world today. It fucking wrecks us. Too many mates to choose from, too many apples to choose, too many movies, too many shoes, too many shampoos!

Here is what is going on in your head: You are afraid of making a bad choice and then regretting it. Okay, that's a fair thing to be afraid of. BUUUUUUT you have made a critical error in your logic. How many choices a day are you making that are going to TOTALLY ruin your life if you make the wrong choice. Not very many. Those kinds of choices don't come along very often, pretty much never (unless you decide to drive a motorcycle through a corn field backwards while naked with a pound of C4 strapped to your head and a bottle of prune juice in your stomach).

But you're treating all of these decisions in your life like they're important. How many of these tough decisions that you've had to make in the past year do you even remember? Probably not very many.

So what can you do?

First, understand this. And I mean REALLY understand it. Most of your choices don't really matter. Maybe you go to this restaurant, maybe you go to that one. Doesn't really matter does it. Maybe you get these shoes, maybe you get these. Who cares. Maybe you go to this party, maybe you go to that party. Stop wasting your time WORRYING ABOUT THE FUTURE OF YOUR CHOICE and just make the choice. Literally set a timer on your phone for like 2 minutes and make a choice by then.

Trust your gut. Your intestines have neurons in them just like your brain and so your gut actually does a little bit of thinking (no joke, its' weird) and so when people say "go with your gut" that's not just a saying. Your instincts are a lot better than you think.

Just practice for a few weeks making fast choices. BOOM! Just do it. Bam! Do it and no turning back. I recently went through this when I was deciding on a pair of boots to buy. Did I want to buy these or these? These have this kind of leather but these have this. These have this color but this one has this. Will this look good with jeans? Can I wear these at a party? WHO GIVES A FUCK. They're boots. Buy the fucking boots and wear them and if you don't like them then buy another pair. Fuck all the wasting time thinking about it.

SO HERE'S YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Every day I want you to practice making a fast decision and then just going with it. Don't think about what could have been. Just go with it. A good way to practice is by deciding what you're going to eat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Just make a fast choice.

If you happen to get to a tougher decision, pull out your phone and set a time for 2 minutes. Make your choice by then and then decide to live with it for the rest of your life.

Do this for 2 weeks.

TWO WEEKS LATER

Okay, onto number two.

PART 2 - You mention wanting to get shit done but then not getting shit done and playing video games, but then feeling guilty for playing the video games.

What is happening here is a tale as old as time. You know it as well as I do. SO I'm just gonna get to how to fix it.

It's all about scheduling. You have to schedule when you're going to work and when you're going to play. And then work when it's time to work and play when it's time to play.

Do you know how fucking great it feels to have time scheduled to do whatever the hell you want with absolutely no guilt? Because you know that you've done what you needed to do and now is LITERAL TIME TO PLAY.

It's fantastic.

So how do you do it?

Just start blocking on 1 hour a day to do the thing you want to do (writing, programming, dancing, whatever it is). Then block out 1 hour a day to play. Easy as that.

Get your shit done first (in the morning if you can) and then schedule 1 hour later to do WHATEVER YOU WANT. But make sure that during that 1 hour you don't let any thoughts of guilt or anything creep in.

Do this for two weeks. Write down on a sheet of paper a weekly schedule but only schedule those 2 hours. The rest are for whatever. BUT KEEP THOSE 2 HOURS SACRED AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT (in the advance course you would eventually get to a point where you're doing 4 hours a day of your deep career work and then the rest of the day you can schedule whatever the hell you want. Your brain can really only SUPER FOCUS for about 4 good hours. After that it's kinda frazzled so you might as well let it rest and absorb fun and games and movies and books and sexy people)

TWO WEEKS LATER

Part 3: Write!

Now we're gonna have some fun. This one is super simple. For the next two weeks this will be your morning routine. You'll wake up, get out of bed, pee, brush your teeth, sit down at a table and drink some water/coffee. And then you'll set a timer and you will write by hand for 10 minutes. That's it! That's all you gotta do! BUT the thing is, you have to write non stop. DO NOT STOP WRITING. Do it for ten minutes. What are you gonna write about? Whatever the fuck you want. The goal here isn't to write anything good, the goal here is just to write and to get your brain unblocked and flowing onto the page. Watch this, I'm about to do 60 seconds of writing like how I would do in the morning. Setting my timer....aaaaand go:

Oaky so I'm writing. I'm sitting here at my desk and I'm about to go home but I"m gonna go by the store on the way home and get some more eggs and so asparagus and I'm gonna make some more of those egg muffin things. I hope the new muffin tray came in from amazon today. I fucked that last one up. lesson learned. man i hope that annilaliton is still playing at the arc light. really need too let hat in theaters. That shit looks like good. Well, i haven't actually seen what it looks like but i hear it's amazing. love alex garland

and that's it. See all the typos? Yup, no going back to fix shit. Just write.

(If you want to get advanced, this technique is from the book "The Artists Way" and it's fucking genius. Your life is going to change, no joke. This is a good way to start a journal b/c you can just kind of free write about what you did yesterday and what you'll do today)

DO THIS FOR 2 WEEKS

u/mmtb1120 · 54 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

Hello all, in a previous post made yesterday, I had replied with a picture of a drawer of my Alex 9 unit and received a few of inquiries about how I made my drawer organizers. So, I decided to try my best to tell you how I did it. I apologize I wasn't able to make a complete step by step with a ton of photos, but this process was done over a year ago, and I wasn't really planning on doing it again since I finished!

Materials Needed:

Ruler

X-acto Knife

-I would recommend some extra blades as well-

--Foam Board (the more the merrier)--

Flathead Pins

--Contact Paper--

-The blades become dull fairly quickly, I think I used about four during the process-

--I was able to get a piece for $.99 at Michael’s on sale

---I decided to wrap each piece with contact paper because it makes it very easy to clean. In my actual vanity, I used fabric and it has gotten dirty and damaged and I 100% don't recommend it--

Template Materials:

Copy Paper or Grid Paper

Ruler

Actual makeup products

Steps:

  1. I first made templates for each drawer. I found using grid paper to design the setup made it very easy, each block was marked as an inch. Using the actual product dimensions I was easily able to map out what could possibly go in each location. It’s nice to know that the height of a standard sheet of copy paper is the width of the drawers! Also, to note, I made sure to give a little space on each side of the product to give it some wiggle room. (The dimension of each drawer is 11.5"x20.5")

  2. I then used normal copy paper to make a full-size map of each drawer. Then using that I transferred it onto the foam board. Measure twice and cut once.

  3. Using a straight edge, I was able to make cuts of each segment. It's easiest to first cut the width of the product and then afterwards cut the height of each compartment making sure they all have a uniform width and height.

  4. After each piece has been cut, I went ahead and wrapped every piece with white contact paper. Contact paper has a sticky back that easily allows it to adhere. Also, the back has its own grid so it was easy!

  5. Once each piece was ready to go ahead and assemble, I made a new template. This one was to make a uniform depth of each compartment (my smaller compacts all had about 3/4 of an inch between each and larger had about 1 inch) A B. This also made it very easy to ensure I had a perfect right angle.

  6. I decided to use flathead pins to connect everything together. I've seen previous YouTube tutorials that used hot glue, but that can be messy and difficult to work with. Also, if you ever need to redo something, you don't destroy what you had done. I used two pins on each side which really anchors the part. I will note, the tips of my index fingers went numb from doing this so much, but the feeling came back…eventually

  7. Enjoy!

    Some other things to note:

In my palette drawer, I created L shaped panels to allow for the palette to be better seen

I also purchased from byAlegory a liquid lipstick and lipstick organizers to build around

In my lipstick drawer, I purchased little glass beads to allow for the products to stand up better

My paper towel drawer has a holder which I created using a wooden dowel and clay

Also, I grabbed plastic liquid dispensers to easily get to my various liquids

Managed to slice my finger open making little lids of acrylic to hold all my disposable paper products

*Most of my other acrylic pieces have been purchased from MUJI

I hope you enjoyed my ~teal battlestation~, if you have any other questions about it feel free to ask. And I'm sorry if it was unclear at all. And, I'm 100% aware I have a stupid amount of makeup that I've gotten over the years as a makeup artist, Sephora employee, and a true Make Up Addict.

I would recommend a couple of things

  1. Use thinner coats of paint. It's the key to a perfect paint job I swear! The first coat should be so light that not everything is totally painted (you should still see primer in some places, especially the edges)

  2. If you want gold joysticks, I wouldn't paint them. Paint adheres especially poorly to rubber and if you're constantly touching them it doens't last long. Instead you can use a PS3 or xbox one joystick that is colored. They're really easy to replace and work just as well - it's just the cover of the joystick that changes not the actual mechanical bit of the joystick. Here is a link for gold xbox one joysticks on amazon
    https://www.amazon.com/XFUNY-Thumbsticks-Joystick-Replacement-Controller/dp/B00XKNLSRS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468006950&sr=8-1&keywords=gold+xbox+one+joystick

  3. If you want to have letters on your buttons I would reccomend using vinyl or waterslide decals. Vinyl decals are probably the easiest but have a bit of an edge so might be annoying when playing. Waterslide decals have no edges and feel just like the button itself. The other option is to spray paint over the vinyl letters and then peel it off. It may also be hard to find vinyl letters that small. I would measure the buttons and see if these could fit...https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U1I54KW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  4. For clear coats I always recommend automotive clear coat -- specifically spray max 2k high gloss. It's about 20 bucks on amazon so it's a bit pricey but if you want a super shiny finish (you can check out some I've done to see how shiny) it's the best.

  5. For the logo in the middle rather than trying to spray paint with a stencil I would try to get a custom decal made. I don't think a waterslide decal would work very well with a black background (and such a light text design) so I would recommend vinyl - which is the cheaper and easier to find option. If you clear coat the vinyl afterwards and try to find someone that makes extra thin ones unless you look really closely it looks painted on.

  6. Just wanted to mention that the clear coat I recommended is also really good for buttons! The buttons eventually chip but because automotive clear coat is the hardest stuff out there it delays the process a bit.

Assuming you want to avoid adult oriented things - and thing that may be considered shady.

I am also assuming your computer is a laptop or relatively mobile.

My suggesting involves a form of selling. First you must pick a subject that you know very well and then think about questions and answers a novice would have.

For example, I know computers/Internet well. Things a novice might ask are:

  1. How can I set up my gmail/yahoo mail/outlook account so it checks mail in other accounts?
  2. How can I set up my gmail/yahoo mail/outlook so that email certain emails are automatically deleted?
  3. How can I see what programs are using the most memory on my computer
  4. How do I backup my computer?
  5. How can remotely view my home computer desktop from my iPhone?
  6. Etc. etc.

Come up with a nice long list of questions and solutions. The idea provide quick/succinct computer advice.

Buy a folding table, folding chair, poster boards, markers, and cookie jar.

    Create Signs:

    Computer Questions Answered! - FREE

    Quick Computer Solutions - FREE

Got an Internet Question? FREE answers

Pack the computer, table, signs and jar into your car and find a spot with high foot traffic. This could be a downtown street, near public transportation, entrance to your neighborhood, community function (street fair, swap meet), the beach, etc.

Once you pick your spot, setup shop. Unfold the table, chair and put up your posters. Get the jar out, take off the top and affix a piece of paper that kindly asks for donations. Be ready to demonstrate you solutions on your computer.

    Here is what will happen:

First, because you are offering the services for free, people will be more inclined to visit your booth.

Second, everyone has a computer and therefore the topic is familiar. You will have people come by that know their answers and want to see yours. You will have people that are genuinely ignorant about a topic that you can help. You will also have know-it-alls that quiz and grill you.

The trick is to be a good salesperson. You are offering good advice, for free, but without warranty. "This works for me, it should work for you, but I can't 100% guarantee". If you have a great demeanor, people will appreciate the novel advice and provide you a donation you.

As an added bonus, I would figure out how to record some of your sessions (web cam?). Then you can post the video with the title "How I made $$$$ quickly...." You can also contact the press describing your adventure and I am sure someone would bite.

Finally, check out this video (6 mins): Tina Seelig: Classroom Experiments in Entrepreneurship I think you will enjoy it.

My recommendations:

  1. Organize yourself. What do you want to get done by the end of the semester? (Probably a lot of it is "the stuff on the syllbaus"!) Now, how do you want to move towards each of those things across each month? Okay, now within each month, how do you want to spread those goals across each week? Then at the beginning of each week, you see where you are at (on/off track), adjust if necessary, then plot out what you want to do each day.

  2. Reorganize yourself. You want to dedicate regular time to reorganizing and reorienting. I always liked organizing, and until I was medicated, I never got organized enough to be effective. Now I am more effective, and I also realize that for me, at least, organization is essential. It helps me feel safe and effective with what I am doing, which is important for keeping me engaged versus constantly pulled away by the feeling that this isn't the right thing, or something I need or want to be doing. It also means I am in control versus doing it only because it is due tomorrow and I'm panicking, which is important to me.

  3. Mess up. You're not going to do what you planned each day. You're going to use that to make less ambitious plans, or you will switch up your strategy in a slight, low-cost way, or you will just forgive yourself and move on. And then you'll get too ambitious again and mess up again. And you'll eventually want to arrive at what are the most important things not to mess up on, and what are you willing to sacrifice? This is also why reorganizing yourself is so important. It plans for you not doing everything ideally to plan. That is actually a part of planning it turns out! :) People who stick to plan to do because their plan is changing to fit where they are at, versus them running to catch up with it.

  4. Take care of your time and self. At least for me, ADHD has meant doing everything last minute, against my will, with panic and terror. I was fast and efficient and working until it was done. Switching strategies was weird. I would estimate time as if everything was done at run-from-a-bear speed (it isn't -- working in advance feels slower and less efficient), and then try to finish everything on the list anyways (which was usually not possible). What I learned was that my most important priority for the day (except when there really is a deadline) is to keep a regular schedule. The second I start staying late (despite showing up early), I am screwed... because then I feel like I have more time, and I slow down more, and then I feel run down and like I am getting no me-time, and... it all spirals out of control. Keeping a regular schedule -- including waking up early every morning -- has made me feel 100% more stable.

  5. Ask for help as soon as you know you need it. It is okay if you're not sure why you need it -- and if your professors are buttheads, that is their problem and you can learn that and find another way to get help without having to feel bad, but definitely at least try asking first. Many educators will appreciate the initiative and engagement.

By the end, you should have small goals towards each of your final projects (for instance, week one might be "write down a few ideas for the paper that is due at the end of the term" and week two might be "write down more ideas" and week three might be "google a few of those ideas")... such small goals they'll feel stupid. That's just about where you want to be. :) Those "stupid to make" goals turn into "woah, I can still fit this goal in even though I lost track of Mon-Wed! Let me bang this mofo out! YAAAAH I DID IT, I AM A CHAMPION!"

    ---

    Planners!

I really like my Triple View planner -- it looks like this, where the to-do list and the days of the month (on left and right sides) are always visible. Then each day of the month has its own page (Sat/Sun share a page), and each has enough space for me to block in appointments and track how else I am using my time right next to the time scale, and then, closer to the spine, I will write in To-Do items planned for that day! The last two (as you can see in the image) for each month are devoted to a more traditional calendar view. (The 2017 one is here.)

They also have weekly/daily ones, for if you just need to track appointments, aren't doing much on Sundays, and they'd probably be thinner I would imagine -- they look like this and can be found here.

I use this planner along with post-it notes for a very useful planning notebook. For instance, for a long time, I took small post it notes and stuck them over the to-do list so that it was an always-visible but also reusable to-do space (since I had many smaller activities I was having to do regularly). Now, I have large, lined post-it notes like these, that cut in half, and I stuck one to every Sat/Sun page, so that when something occurs to me that I need to do sometime next week, I can quick jot it down there, and at the end of the week, I can move that forward easily until I get them written down and planned out on my master to do list.

Ok this one is one of my favoritest organizer ideas. You could use this for maybe brushes or the items you use most. And you can use an old antique frame so it looks just the way you want :) It's basically a magnetic board and you add little magnetic stripes to some items and pin them up Idea 1

Magnetic board It's not that expensive and you can get these in all sizes, so if you don't have much space it's perfect :)

Another thing if you have much space on the walls is take little containers and hang them on the wall, so you can fill your stuff in them. I can't find a picture of it now, sorry.

I love this organizer, it's just so cute :)

For your brushed you could maybe do this. You could decorate the glasses to fit your house and color theme of your room :)

This mirror is the cutest!

I'm not sure about the English cottage theme, but this desk and mirror is absolutely fabulous too. It might not be what you're looking for though.

For your palettes maybe this, since you have quite a few

A short list of ideas:

I came here to recommend this initiative tracker - I used it for 13th Age, not Pathfinder, but it was massively helpful. I hunted around and found it for $20, not $35, but you could probably make a version of your own with a small whiteboard base and some fun fantasy-style decorations.

The cheapest minis that aren't ugly and have a wide variety you'll find are likely Bones from Reaper. They aren't pre-painted but they are easy (and fun!) to paint and a beginner's set of paints are cheap. We do painting parties with our gaming groups and it's a nice way to get a great set of minis and let people unleash their inner artist.

Every GM I know, myself included, loves the Critical Hit d20 from ThinkGeek. It's incredibly fun to roll it, get a crit and slowly raise your screen up while staring at your players as they realize their impending doom heralded by the rapidly flashing red light.

A battlemap and the (wet erase) markers to go with it is the only other tool that I regularly use when GMing - depending on the game it might not be necessary at all, but it's nice to have it to reference, especially for a new group.

Here are the PDFs of the artwork for easy printing on 8.5” x 11”. You should be fine printing at 100% and make sure it's Landscape mode.

RIGHT ARM

LEFT ARM

Supplies you’ll need:

Color printing capabilities for 8.5”x 11” paper (standard Letter size)

Two (2) qty. 20” x 30” foam core boards—I went with this size because they are most readily available at stores like Michaels and Staples or even Amazon

20"x30" Foam Core Boards and here is a 10-pack on Amazon if you wanted to do your entire row (DO IT)

Spray Mount or glue stick

Scissors and a boxcutter

A cutting mat would be helpful but is optional

•Feel free to ask questions. If I can, I’ll try to answer but I hope you find it pretty easy. Only the cutting part takes attention but I found that easiest to hack large parts off in straight cuts and then get progressively smaller with the cuts. Good luck and let’s surprise the ALCS with #LETBRETTBANG signs everywhere! LFG

EDIT: You don't need to use foam core. You can probably use a large cardboard box or poster board. That might even be easier to cut. I just recommend the foam core because for its lightweight not much matches its rigidity.

I'll try to be specific with what I recommend, giving brands and models if I can. Bear in mind, I'm from a STEM major, so some of this is stuff I've used for math and other related classes that you might not need.

  1. Uniball KURU TOGA Mechanical Pencils - These are hands-down the best mechanical pencils I've ever used. It has a mechanism that rotates the lead as you lift up the pencil (I think? or maybe as you write...) so you get a sharp, clean script nearly all the time. My only gripe is I lose the eraser caps a lot, and if you don't have them on it's difficult to click more lead. The "Roulette" model might be different.

  2. TOPS Engineering Computation Pad - I actually take my in-class notes on my Surface Pro (highly recommend it), and use my next recommendation for practice problems, but I use this paper for my hand-in assignments. I don't like ruled paper for any kind of computation work, and with plain paper I tend to veer off and don't get clean lines. With this paper, though, I can see the grid on the backside through the front, allowing me to get a clean look without thick lines muddying up the aesthetics. This isn't necessary, but for me it makes my work easier to read and organize, and it often times is the only green paper in the homework pile so it's easy to pick out as well!

  3. NUboard A4 Dry Erase Notebook - My wife bought this for me for my first semester because I was going through so much paper to do practice problems, and because I hated standing up to do work on a bigger dry erase board. It's the size of a normal notebook with transparent sheets overlapping the dry erase panels, and your notes will (more or less) stay on the board until you erase them. By this I mean that you can do some notes or problems, close the book, shove it in your backpack, and when you open it it will be as you left it. This thing changed my studying habits, and I use a lot less paper now.

Here's some other random things I didn't think of before I realized I need them in the moment. I try to keep these things in my backpack most of the time:

Surge Protector - I do all my studying in the library, and if I don't get there early, all the desks with outlets get snatched up quickly (especially near midterms and finals). I ended up picking up a cheap one at Micro Center and keep it in my backpack in case I need to sit somewhere further away. Also, it helps others that aren't close to one either. :)

Noise-Cancelling Headphones - I study in the "absolute quiet" floors, but even then some people make some noise just shuffling papers, zipping-unzipping stuff, eating lunch, etc. You don't need the Bose fancy ones; anything that keeps the noise out (and, I should mention, your own music IN) will work.

Chegg/Wolfram Subscription - These saved my academic butt so many times. Wolfram might not be necessary if you're only taking one math course as a GEP requirement, but if you're taking up to Calc2 or 3 it's great. It can solve integrations and derivatives, but, more importantly, it will also show you a step-by-step solution. Chegg, however, I think is worth it for nearly any class. I've only had one or two textbooks whose answers weren't on there, and for the others it was a lifesaver. Professors will sometimes not post solutions or answers to problems in class or on homework, and books will often only have the answer in the back. Chegg, however, not only has the answer, but, more often than not, has step-by-step solutions. I used this all the time for two things specifically: 1) Check my homework before I turn it in to make sure I understood the processes (and got the answers right), and 2) doing practice problems from the book that the professor didn't address or post solutions for.

    Hope this helps!

Great idea for a contest! I just went to my transfernorientation today and flooded my wishlist with the new category of "crap I actually need :/"

I've found a lot of cool stuff. I hope you don't mind me posting more than one- it's not like, to make sure I win the contest, but because I want to share all the nifty things I've found :P

I love the design of this key holder

Robot flash drive! I love robots!

Wood USB Drive!

OMG this pizza cutter!

and this one too!

Mondrian dry erase board!

You need these adorable hedgehog dryer balls

Also, if you aren't aware of dry erase and/or chalkboard adhesive vinyl, you now are. Quick, cheap, non-wall-damaging noteboard. Awesomeness.

Good job there! Here some improvement tips to make it look smoother:
You can use this board as bases or even building material, it works really well! I've just got at a stopping point of my first scenery pieces: http://imgur.com/a/EuGXa
Super easy, just the board, PVA glue and some pins to hold it in place while it dries. Is about 90% complete, just some touch ups left. But you get the idea. The possibilities are endless, sometimes you just need to see someone doing and go from there!
P.S.
The wedges he uses in the video, for the base of the tank, are here. I've picked mine up at walgreens for a couple of dollars. They look a little nicer than the styrofoam, since it's all bubbly. So maybe look for some things that still work, but give you the ability to work with better! Still, I am super happy that you actually ended up building that!

Hi Everyone OP here. This project is something I wanted to do for years but I wanted it done right. I'm not super skilled in the DIY area so I wanted to make this process as simple as possible and I think I accomplished that! Feel free to post any questions about this and I will respond as quickly as possible. However, here are the very high level steps outline below.

How to Make a Framed Corkboard Map
1.Purchase corkboard, map, and map pins from Amazon or somewhere else
2.Unscrew corkboard frame
3.Tape map every 2 to 3 inches to the corkboard on all four sides
Note: Start at the top, and then move clockwise.
4.Place frame back on corkboard. Be careful not to snag the map
Note: This process may take a little finesse and time. For me it was easier to put the top and bottom on first the fit the sides.
5.Screw the corner brackets back in
6.Apply pins as you wish!

The chessex-style battlemats are pretty great, but I got a 10-pack of 12x9 whiteboards that I really like. Usually never need more than 4 at a time, but if need be I can just plop down another board in whatever direction and expand the map.

Can also hand 'em out to the players for their own notes and whatnot, use one yourself as a combat tracker, whatever. Super useful.

Thank you so much! I'm going with option 2. It might make the transition to a more structured planner easier.

I decided to get the Mead Organizher Shopping Companion, 5.5 x 8.5 Inches, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GE4I92W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ACBIxbJ5Q7GV8

I just can't afford a cool new hole punch plus materials right now. I probably won't use it for its original purpose, but it's the perfect size. It has pockets and other useful stuff, and I'll be able to make new pages with what I already have!
Can't wait to get to work on this! Thanks for your help.

What I did for Warhammer Diskwars (which uses the right-angle boundary markers too) is got a 36" X 36" cork board from Hobby Lobby. I then purchased some felt to cover the area and glued it with VERY THIN application of Tacky Glue (think Craft Elmer's glue). I stress VERY THIN as if you put too much, it will bleed thru the felt and create a hard spot.
This has worked out great...and its double sided so I have one side black (for space!!!) and green (for grass)

I suggest an arts and crafts store (Jo-Ann's Fabric, Hobby Lobby, Michaels) as they will run coupons for '50% off one item' weekly (they have phone apps which make them easier to find) so the ~$20 bulletin board becomes half price.

I tried to find something similar on Amazon to link, but all they have are rectangles, and their prices are high and I'd imagine shipping is high too cause of their awkward size.

Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Brands-Bulletin-Board-Inches-Frame/dp/B00PRYQ9YU only square and much cheaper. (my 36"x36" was maybe $15 or so at Hobby Lobby, before the 50% coupon)

As you can guess, this is not portable, but I usually host games at my house so no big deal.

Start with the underlay.

Got your underlay in position? Awesome. Now add the overlay materials. Use /u/the-packet-thrower's stencils in conjunction with your overlay and underlay tools.

Need to back out a change? Use the standard change management tools prescribed by the underlay/overlay technologies..

I used two layers of cork and cut out a channel in the top layer for the thermistor and its wires.
Quartet Cork Tiles, Natural, 12 Inch x 12 Inch, Frameless, 4 Pack (102) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018DHBAK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_0y-kxbA5N9MQK

Just found some of these .25" thick 12"x12" squares at Michaels Craft Store and cut them down to size with a sharp knife. Then to raise the bed the amount that I needed I just folded up some painters tape and taped that to the bottom middle of the cork. I can possibly take a picture later. You can shim the underside of that cork with whatever you want since it insulates so well.

Edit: like These
