I would suggest getting a hanging bag either 50 or 75 pounds. Everlast is a cheaper good quality brand and easy to find in most sporting stores. The most important thing is to get hand wraps and the heaviest gloves you can find, Everlast is also a good brand here. There are many youtube videos showing how to properly wrap your hands it is very important in preventing injuries.

If you have never hit a heavy bag it is easy to fuck up your hands and wrists especially if you have any strength. Any injury will kill your motivation to continue using the heavy bag. The last thing you want is a trip to a orthopedic physician because you broke your hand or wrist.

The standing heavy bags i don't have as much experience with, i would imagine they are more expensive and less useful. the ones i have trained on i had to actually hold back on because they usually have plastic behind the bag which hurts like hell if you ever feel contact with, also they rock around alot and make a bunch of noise.

Get a round timer as well for a few bucks. Altogether i dont think it would cost you more than 150-200 dollars for this setup.

These are the gloves i use http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11218525. Expensive but worth every dollar as i never get sore or have injuries to my hands in years.

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=24519766 is a good starter bag. I upgraded to 100 not long after using this as it swung around too much.

one of the best investments was when i got my husband a punching bag. All in all it was about $175. its a regular punching bag and it comes with a stand like this. We got it with the stand because we rent and know we're going to be moving sooner rather than later. its substantially cheaper if you can just hang it and get one of these. I got a cheaper pair of gloves and googled "punching bag workout". I started doing a quick circuit that takes about 10 minutes but it works out every muscle in my body. I do that and do weights too. You dont have to start off buying something big. I got a kettle bell for $8 from marshalls, a jump rope for like $3, and hand weights for $5 at target. So you can start off with something inexpensive like that. Less than $20 and you already spent less than you wouldve for a month at the gym.

Yes, absolutely. As the person above said you just need to find a stud (or two, like mine https://imgur.com/ZezD9OQ.png)

I also recommend a spring like this to reduce noise https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G8QRL3W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I bought this off amazon -> Eapele Heavy Bag Hangers Brackets for Wood Beam

Admittedly I haven't put too much into the bag, I'm getting a new pair of gloves delivered today, so I should have a better idea this week. That being said, based on the few punches I have thrown at it, it seemed very solid and I didn't notice any movement on cross members (House was pretty well built IMO from the early 90's).

This one is a bit over 4"

https://www.amazon.com/comingfit-220lbs-Weight-Capacity-Spring/dp/B06XHD44DR/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=heavy+bag+spring&qid=1556138328&s=gateway&sr=8-2

Personally, I use these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CCFCO0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They are strong, bouncy, and don't transmit vibrations very much at all. My bag is only 40-50 lbs, so they work great. I cut the chains off my bag and use these instead. You can buy different lengths or weave them around the D rings to decrease length further. If your bag has nylon straps and not chains (or weighs 150 lbs), you may not be able to use them though.

Shouldn't be a problem at all. You'll want
http://www.amazon.com/Balazs-Boxing-Heavy-Bag-Spring/dp/B0000AMK2B
Or similar though.

I would get a smallish piece (1/2-3/4" x 4-5") of allthread and put through a predrilled hole in your 2x6, and then have it layed out like [nut- washer-chain-washer-2x6-washer-chain-washer-nut] and really crank it down. So then you'll have a loop of chain to put through the top of the spring, then run separate chains from the bottom of the spring to each of the metal rings on the bag, making sure each one has the same number of links.

/r/homegym may have better info.

If you have access to the top of your overhead studs, like an attic, then some strapping around the stud would give you extra support. Otherwise, heavy duty ceiling hooks fastened with 2 lag bolts per ring would work. Those are the type usually used for mounting heavy punching bags. A single eye hook will likely pull out of the stud over time.

Edit: Here's an example: http://www.amazon.com/RDX-Boxing-Ceiling-Training-Hanger/dp/B00AKFR5TE

u/zeuther · 2 pointsr/Fitness

You mean something like this? If so, Id highly recommend buying it rather than making one with wood. Chances are it’ll be sturdier.

u/dgv54 · 1 pointr/homegym

Thanks for all the suggestions. I might give this a try with a spring and swivel.

Seems like a water-filled bag anchor would also help by reducing movement? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001XSN8M0/

Trying to decide between a lighter bag (60-70lbs) or heavier bag (90-100lbs). Thinking the heavier bag would move less and create less vibration. Or should I not think about bag weight in terms of noise/vibration, but only in terms of appropriate bag weight for my skill level and size (which would point toward a lighter bag)?

u/JamesPhilip · 2 pointsr/homegym

I hang mine from the metal I beam that runs through my basement. Doesn't shake the house like mounting to the rafter would and I can easily relocate it.

Have you thought about a wall mounted paddle or one that mounts to you heavy bag ?
Examples
Spin Kick

ProForce Paddle Clapper Target

You could always build you something from PVC or 2x4's to.
hope this helps . Look at this guys simple setup

I have this:
Century Corner Man Hanger (2 Box Item), One Size https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076HBLVZQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_at1uDbJCW2C0S
It was better than hanging from the ceiling. It does take up room though.

u/Bag_of_Rocks · 1 pointr/amateur_boxing

The wood beams that support a house are very sturdy. They will have no problem supporting the weight of the bag and the impact of your punches. There are spring attachments you can hang the bag from to keep the vibrations from making noise throughout the house. Example:

The chain for my punching bag broke not too long ago so a new chain would be awesome! Also here is a guy hitting a punching bag :)

u/GrimChicken · 2 pointsr/taekwondo

Something like this?

He could use one of these. You fill em with water.

That's what I have ! I just failed to draw it correctly lol. And it's two of those side by side so they're each bearing some of the weight?

I use the home depot swing on wooden joists in my basement and there's no vibration at all, that setup would be fine. Maybe add a small length of chain if you have to drop it down

u/wittyid2016 · 1 pointr/homegym

I'm in the very early stages of finishing my basement...the center piece of which will be a home gym. I'm in the process of framing it out. I'm on the hunt for tips on long-lead things to consider. What I have so far is:

  • Wiring for built-in speakers in the ceiling
  • Wiring for TV
  • Anchor for heavy bag
  • Anchor for TRX
  • Lots of electrical outlets for the cardio equipment (tread mill, bike, rower)

What else should I be thinking about now? Any anchors in the walls for bar racks or equipment? My ceiling is only 8' so I'm not going to be able to do pull-up bars I don't think. Thanks!

I highly recommend a spider mount. They’re pricey, but the damage you could cause by hanging from a single joist is significantly more...

Firstlaw Fitness Spider Mount 140 - Heavy Punching Bag Hanger - For Heavy Bags up to 140 LBS - Made in the USA https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0175DL8PU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_vVzJBb9Q176KQ

Using chain-less bags, there’s virtually no sound from the bag outside of impact. I bought a 3/4 piece of plywood and cut it so I could span three joists, and then mounted this mount to the plywood. Painted it all black and it looks slick (my gym ceiling is black). Can provide pictures if you would like.

u/jayrot · 1 pointr/amateur_boxing

Did this myself not all that long ago. First things first. You need to go into a ceiling joist, not just in the drywall. (http://youtu.be/Y2cBXAUaDJQ)

So here's what you do -- if your ceiling joists are exposed, great, but if not you'll need to find them. You can use a studfinder or just drill some small pilot holes until you find wood. Joists are almost always spaced at 16"oc.

Cut a 2x4 and using large lag screws, attach it to 2 joists to distribute the load a little bit.

I bought this hanger and screwed it into the center of the 2x4, between the joists. Pretty damn solid.
