my now 4-year-old loved (and still loves) play doh, and kid safe washable paint. also, for something less supervised, Color Wonder markers and paper/books are great, they make paints too and stamps, it's made by Crayola. my kid also liked helping with easy tasks when cooking, specifically mashing bananas for bread. i made some slime not that long ago, was super easy (glue, food coloring, shaving cream and contact solution i think were the only ingredients) that was a hit and it lasted FOREVER kept in a tupperware.

we also love books, he especially enjoys interactive books like flip the flap or Don't Push The Button and Press Here

he also started getting into puzzles at that age, we had these from his first or second birthday that he took a while to take interest in, but once he did he was obsessed. they have all kinds, pets, vehicles, dinosaurs. we also have this set too

when it comes down to it, as long as you don't mind a mess, just about anything can be an activity in a pinch. bust out some different food from the cabinet, sensory explore the differences between things like flour, sugar, oatmeal, or if your brave, get messy with things like peanut butter, syrup, ketchup. get the pots and pans out and have a drum circle in the kitchen.

when all else fails, put on uptown funk, turn it up, and have a dance party

Trust me when I say that you really can tell the difference, especially compared to the original Rubiks! If you're getting into solving them quickly, or even just fidgeting with them (like I do) you definitely can feel when cheaper cubes catch or fail to turn. Never had it happen with a nice one!

Try and get your hands on a suitable wooden box. Then you can easily make the mechanism with wooden scraps and a few nails. I've made this one without any woodworking skill whatsoever.

This toy is the best toy ever. Even though it's very popular and you might already have one, you should get it if you don't have one. Plus I want to know how to complete it.

There are speed cubes that are made to turn very smoothly and easily, which is most likely what he has. I'm not sure which exact one he's using, but this is the one I use and I really like it! There are a bunch of threads on /r/cubers with recommendations so that would be a good place to check as well!

I've been babysitting my tiny cousins for a while (3-5 year olds), and they seem to really enjoy dancing. I suppose since I've been playing kpop for them, that's what they like now. But there's also the Baby Shark song and Just Dance videos. They can get a little rowdy with their dance moves, so remind them to be careful. This usually tires them out.

Puzzles are another option that's relatively quiet. Depending on how young they are, you might need to give them hints about where the pieces go. But eventually they'll learn it on their own. I've done the same puzzles probably hundreds of times now and they haven't gotten tired of it (until they do and then it's off to playing house or grocery store). I hope you know how to solve a Rubik's cube. It's easy once you break it down and learn it in small steps.

Solve time = move count / TPS (Turns per Second)

So to reduce solve time you need to reduce move count or increase your TPS. To reduce move count you can learn new algorithms and try to work on reducing your 4LLL to 2LLL. To increase your TPS you need to work on fingertricks and also getting "a chinese cube of some sort" could help. When I got serious about improving my time I started with a QiYi Warrior W. For $7 it's asking for that much dedication.

Haven't done any speed cubing since the Guhong era, but heard about magnetized cubes and it sounds really interesting.

I'm planning on getting a Meilong from Amazon and a set of 50 nm50 4x2 magnets from ebay.

Amazon has them for $7.94. You could probably pick up a few here and there at garage sales, Salvation Army, etc. I have more than my fair share of them and I've only ever paid for one (at least only one 3x3). You tend to collect them over time.

Surprisingly, the QiYi Warrior W is less expensive than a Rubik's brand. It's my first speedcube, and even after only a few days it's served me well.

I did accidentally break it today while trying to put it back together (to be fair, I have no idea how) after a purposeful pop, so do keep that in mind
