Volunteer Fire Fighter and Career Systems Engineer here:

  1. Spray the inside of that box with a fire resistant spray. Flame Stop II is a good water based spray on that drys clear and chemically bonds to the wood, which is much better than pressure treating. There is also some spray on amazon you can use, but I've never tried it before. Reviews look promising though: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003M8G39E/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687642&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B002TKLD14&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1X061QM3S972YR6MYRD5
Make sure to hit the area's that you put metal into wood, since those area's could become potential hotspots.

  2. You NEED to do something about the cooling situation in that box. You may not see issues now, but computer parts don't like excessive heat and will break down over time. That enclosure will trap excessive heat.
What I would suggest doing for an effective cooling system is installing an AC Infinity Airplate. http://www.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-AIRPLATE-Thermostat-Cabinets/dp/B00QFWWZQO
It's affordable, comes with a slick looking lcd interface, and has detachable metal guards that you can stain or rust to your hearts contempt to keep that vintage look. If the one duel fan panel isn't enough you can get another single fan and guard for like $20 bucks and add it into the existing controller.

  3. Where do you hook your VGA, aux, network, usb, ect up too? I don't see access points for those ports.

It may be worth having a look at something like this to add to the cabinet, if you don't already have airflow.

Thanks! It’s this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QFWWZQO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4ZODCbTSWEAT7

With an extra one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009CO543S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_k1ODCbPRY9JMD

Bought the white face plates for all three.

Listen to /u/KarlProjektorinsky. A structured media center is really the best way to go. It offers tons of flexibility, and can be reconfigured on the fly as your needs change. If you buy a composite version, it is RF transparent, you you can mount your wifi router in there without problems of range.

I've got my cable modem, firewall, security system, telco, and powered gigabyte ethernet switch in a 42" long cabinet that sits between two studs.

Since I have a 3 TB hard drive in there, I keep it all cool with an Airplate T7:

Runs cool and quiet. It's in the master bedroom closet, and you'd never know it was there.

Thanks! Yes, that's this bad boy: AC Infinity AIRPLATE T7, Quiet Cooling Fan System with Thermostat Control, for Home Theater AV Cabinets. Worth every penny. Silent and does a great job of cooling the closet.

Do you have a TV console/cabinet that you could hide it all in? Or perhaps even building your own TV console? Something like this console for starters. Then add a 2U of rack rails for the Unifi switch. Or more and add a rack shelf, depending on your equipment. And finally, put an AC Infinity Airplate T7 fan unit for air intake or exhaust.

I built this entertainment center for a friend, but could have easily changed the dimensions for standard 19" rack equipment. The cabinet door fronts are mesh, and my friend opted to install just normal 120mm fans in the rear.

I actually already wired everything with outlets. There's a set behind the monitor that you can see and another inside the wall that you can't. It's quite a tight squeeze in there--9" wide I can't really fit.

And yes, I've had these in my cart for a while--but they're quite expensive and I'm not sure fit for the application. If the wall is "open" with a vent, fans inside a case should do just fine, and I'm worried that the wall/AC cabinet fans will just blow dust around inside the wall (there's insulation and other stuff in there--it's behind drywall).

Going to highly recommend you get an Airplate, amigo.

I have a setup with even more space on the sides of my Xbone and PS4 (both in separate cabinets). I have dual 120mm plates on one side of the shelves, and they still run hot after awhile.

I just put one of these in a TV stand I built. It's really slick, but just a touch louder than I would like.

Just to echo /u/GlamRockDave: what are you using the PC for? Are you playing games or are you just streaming/watching media? If you're just do the later then having something like a FireTV is what I would go for and then relocate the media source somewhere else. With FireTV (and Roku or AppleTV to some extent) you can use a combination of Netflix, Amazon Prime, Plex, and Kodi to get all the media coverage you could possibly need. They make back-of-tv mounts for these to keep it further hidden if you want.

If you need the PC to be physically present you can relocate it into a smaller case or rebuild a new one. They make lots of great cases for that sort of thing these days. Examples: Cooler Master Elite 130, Fractal Design Node 304. There are also slightly larger ones if you need them but I've ben using the CM Elite 130 for almost two years now, with a "short" Radeon R9 270X. Original PC part build here.

If you need to keep the original tower I don't really have any ideas on furniture. /u/Sidekicknicholas suggests Ikea and I just used the Besta to build my entertainment unit... albeit without PC. The only concern I would have is ventilation. You can make your own with a drill and PC fans or there are some off-the-shelf kits.

excellent ok - I have been doing some research and came across these...

https://www.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-AIRPLATE-Thermostat-Cabinets/dp/B00QFWWZQO/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_60_bs_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=N0JSF93D31SFDFMKCM8Y

I am thinking about getting 2 or even 3 of these (i want this cabinet to be a fridge lol) and also getting a top cooler for my receiver. Has anyone ever put holes into a cabinet though? I'm so worried about doing this to brand new furniture

u/mgithens1 · 1 pointr/homelab

Just ran across this over the last week or so.

https://www.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-AIRPLATE-Thermostat-Cabinets/dp/B00QFWWZQO/ref=pd_sim_147_9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=5TWZCRRD4P8NBJN6H98X

Its expandable to handle like 6 fans, moves like 200ft^3/min, but more importantly it is temp controlled. Clean, fairly inexpensive.

As far as design - pull in from bottom, push out from top. If you're using a closet, either slide the shelves away from the back wall or port them to allow air exchange all the way. (pro tip, use mesh / perf shelves to allow the air to rise)

u/lilpokemon · 1 pointr/hometheater

I have been looking at a few of these after I got my AVR a week ago. The Ikea BESTA TV unit doesn't have much airway in the back so I have to either rip out the panel or make holes for the fans.

Wish I could make my own, haven't had a chance to look that up yet. I have dozens of high end fans from over the years and would prefer to use those over the ones that come with it.

Interested in this one - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QFWWZQO

I am close to sticking one of my ecobee sensors inside there just so I know the temp and get alerts.

I am buying a cabinet - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CM1SN7C
And want to do two things:
A) put on casters
B) Cut out some spots for these fans/controller. https://www.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-AIRPLATE-Thermostat-Cabinets/dp/B00QFWWZQO

What kind of tools should I get for B? I was thinking a circular saw, and wood glue but that seems wrong. I was assuming I'll just measure/trace the size of the insert of the fan, use 'a saw' (Is Circular the right one?) to cut it out, and glue it in...

For the casters I assume I just buy 4 casters, and screw 'em on; Nothing off about this. Welcome any advice.

+1 AC Infinity. They have a variety of 120mm kits that come with or without mounting plates, as well as optional controllers. They are USB powered but can be powered via a wall outlet adapter. I've been using them on my Denon for a while and they are silent.
