Interesting, I was looking through diagrams trying to find air pathways I hadn't considered and I saw this diagram. It shows a "EGR injection valve" (circled) https://i.imgur.com/TGrjT2O.jpg inside the intake. This connects to the large tube that is connected to a passage that connects to the egr housing. (tried to illustrate in pic)
I don't have one of these. It's possible during the rebuild it got lost or fell out but still, I dont recall seeing it then. I know for sure I dont have it installed now. I have never heard of such a valve, but this engine is so oddball im not really surprised.
I think, it is supposed to regulate return airflow from the egr valve since the egr valve is electronic and doesnt have vacuum control? Either way I'm thinking this would be a big source of pirate air that my leak tests couldn't reach and would kinda explain the location of the hissing I heard. I think this would create a similar internal vacuum leak similar to a booster thats leaking internally. Any thoughts? Has anyone heard of a valve like this in other engines?
edit: this is whats called an "injection valve" or "fuel injection tube" it looks from the length/height it runs air past the inside of the intake to the IAC area or similar. https://www.amazon.ca/ACDelco-219-166-Fuel-Injector/dp/B000C9K3WY
