I had the same problem with the first bluetooth iPad keyboard I bought. Try using VI over SSH without an escape key.

I bought this keyboard off Amazon and have been very happy with it. Everything is where it should be, escape and backslash included, and the price is reasonable.

I have and love an AmazonBasics Bluetooth keyboard that I use with my nexus 7.

Amazon has two models, Apple version and Android version.

Both are under 50 bucks.

If you're looking for a well reviewed keyboard that's fairly decent, I'd go for the AmazonBasics model. I got it for my Mom when I gave her my iPad and she complained about the touch screen. This keyboard has the special function keys for iOS devices, and comes with a mini stand to hold up your iPad.

Another popular one is the Logitech Keyboard Case. It's a bit over your price range, but is a name brand keyboard, and doubles as a case that attaches on and fits. If you get an iPad mini, they have a suitably sized one as well.

Are you worried about taking the Macbook Air because you think it would be more likely to be stolen? I'm not sure if that's actually the case but if you have decent travel insurance that's much less of an issue. I've used World Nomads and have successfully claimed electronics that were stolen in SEA without too much hassle (though they did require a police report to be filed).

If you end up going the tablet + keyboard route, here's a cheap but sturdy Bluetooth keyboard: http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Bluetooth-Keyboard-Travel-iPhone/dp/B005EOWBKE

I used an Android phone with Bluetooth keyboard for a one month trip and it was barely manageable. Organizing and uploading photos was a pain. So was navigating airline/bus/hotel/guesthouse web sites. I'm definitely taking a full-featured laptop (probably Macbook Air) next time I travel.

I use Word. I also have a cheap Bluetooth keyboard I got off amazon that works really well with my phone or tablet.

I got an Amazon basics bluetooth keyboard and it's nice for the money, but too cramped imo, so I'm going to replace it with a Logitech K811 which should be arriving soon. As far as a stand, i got this and think it's good for the price

I mean like the apple wireless keyboard or the amazon keyboard. That Filco Air looks awesome. Thank you.

You can use a bluetooth keyboard for iPad. If you don't like how cramped the case keyboards are, get a full sized one. Here's one on Amazon. Scrivener is developing an iOS version as well.

I sometimes use an Apple wireless keyboard with my iPad, works great. Works well with the Nexus 7 too.

Amazon has a nice keyboard that's a bit cheaper.

I like small keyboards because I have short fingers. Im using the amazon keyboard because I can reach all the keys fairy easy. I also switched my right command to ctrl.

AmazonBasics brand keyboard. Their products usually work pretty well.
