this guy has the right idea. but when replacing everything you should highly consider upgrading the components.
hopefully your ipod is a 5th or 5.5 generation ipod classic video.
this is the best ipod classic model to upgrade into a higher capacity ipod (128gb, 250gb, 500gb)
then buy these parts on amazon...

the first item is a 128gb & 256gb mini SD card. this will give you the best/fastest performance possible for the size/price. booting from a flash card will be much noticeably faster than your ipod.
the next item is an SDXC to CF adapter, which will allow you to connect the 128gb SD card onto your 1.8 ZIF.
the third item is the CF to 1.8 ZIF adapter for iPod.
the last item are the tools needed to do everything.
connect it all together and you got yourself a super fuckin cool ipod.
check out amazon and ebay for new cases, faces, whatever. you can even get the aftermarket U2 ipod covers and install them.
ipod motherboard.
cheers.
EDIT: last item is actually a higher capacity battery + tools.
Your hard drive died. It happens..the drive in there has got to be 10 years old now, and it was the tiniest little hard drive you ever did see, anyways. Luckily, replacing the hard drive is not only super easy, but prices have gone down so much that you can replace it with 128GB for quite a reasonable price.

Good luck!
you don't even need a Compact flash card these days. Way cheaper to just get a CF to SD card adapter and use any SD card you have laying around. https://www.amazon.com/Digigear-SDXCF-Extreme-Ultimate-Compact/dp/B00EPMWT1M/
New battery is a worthy investment too if you're opening it up.
Not OP but a 5Dc owner if you buy this set (which you should) buy this bad boy and used regular SD cards with a 5Dc.
Not really.

I've recommended this hub many times. It's what I use to backup my photos while traveling. It may not work with all external hard drives, but I use a larger flash drive and it works great. But if it has its own power source it sounds like it might work.
Alternately you could go with one of these. They are bit more expensive, but seem to work a little easier.
Also, I think it's a bit easier to use SD cards for this scenario without a computer. I use this adaptor and haven't had any issues. Makes life a little easier while traveling not having to worry about bringing a separate reader.
Hope all that helps a little.
I've been using two of these for a few years now with no problems in a Nikon D300.
Thanks for the tip! Turned out I needed to get a CF to SD card that had true IDE on it. This one here did the trick: https://www.amazon.com/Digigear-SDXCF-Extreme-Ultimate-Compact/dp/B00EPMWT1M
ok so for the cf adapter I used the digigear found here. it works great and would highly recommend. for the sd card itself I used a 128gb sandisk microsd with an adapter. Now for the battery, I bought an ipod mini on ebay found here. Honestly I really cheaped out on the battery and so far for the day I've been using it it's been good. Reviews for the product are pretty mixed so I'll PM you in a few days after I've seen if I got fucked or not. It was $6 though so worst case scenario I'll bitch at the seller if it fails and buy one from ifixit for $15.

This adapter works seamlessly on my d200 and d300
Do not buy that CF to SD card adapter it will not work. I bought the same one and could never get the iPod to work with it. I have modded a gen 3 iPod classic and a gen 4 classic (photo) and these components worked perfectly so they should work in yours fine. Hope that helps.

I have seen reports of a CF to SD working on most camera, I have one coming from Amazon im going to throw in my 7d. The only issue I would forsee is the 64gb wall in a few scenarios like firmware upgrades.
The 7D is indeed CF only.
This is the one I ordered.
Wouldn't have the advantages of CF cards.
>Compact Flash allows for transferring large blocks of data all at once. Useful for video or high MP cameras.
>The highest end cards can transfer data at 167 MB/s
>Compact Flash cards were built from the ATA standard for hard drives, so they can be used to replace disks in computers and store data in FAT16 or NTFS.
>The basis of Compact Flash is about five years older than SD technology.
I use this CF to SD adapter in my 40D just fine if you need a recommendation.

I just did this very same mod about a half hour ago and it went great! iTunes was able to detect and restore the iPod, and I'm currently uploading music now
Just a few weeks ago I modded my BW iPod 4th Gen. I used this SD to CF adapter, and this CF to IDE adapter. Sadly, it looks like it's out of stock. The one that the other person linked looks good. Always read the reviews.
I also recommend checking out this thread over at MacRumors. It has a lot of invaluable information about this mod. OP did it with a photo, but many others have done it with BW 4th gens, and there are even a few third gens. Reading through it gives you an idea of the issues other people have run into and how to fix them. Also a good place to go if you run into issues.
Best of luck to you! Let me know if you have any questions.
There are CF to SD card adapters. Keep the cards under 4GB to be safe.

That's why I've had to use SD cards in an adapter in Slot B. It's an extra step, but it actually hasn't caused me any trouble (to my surprise). I got an SD to CF adaptor and use the Apple branded SD to iPhone card reader.
I have one of these in all of my cameras.
And then I pop the card out and into one of these.

This has been 100 percent reliable for four years, and the best way I've found to move only selected photos from my camera to my phone on the fly.
One nice benefit to running an SD card in one slot has been how cheap giant SD cards are, too. When I'm on assignments where I do video it's nice to have a giant backup available.
You're probably not going to have much luck fitting the SATA drive into the device, even if you can find the right series of adapters.

I would suggest replacing the drive with an SD card in an SD-CF adapter into a CF to 1.8 IDE adapter. What you have is the same kind of drive used in the old iPods, so there's actually some demand out there for adapters for that interface. Readily sold online, even on Amazon.

CF to 50-pin 1.8 IDE
SD card to CF

And of course you'll need an SD card, but probably best to find one around the size of the old drive, like a 32GB or so.
If you mean for the iPod Classic 1/2, I've seen people have success with these: Digigear SDXCF SD SDHC SDXC to CF Type II Extreme/Ultimate Compact Flash Card Adapter, Note Not for CF Type One Slot https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EPMWT1M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_.2FZxb1B41WRQ
