Reminds me of a cheap-o stand alone door/window alarm. (Maybe a pool alarm) case missing, and wires probably went to a piezo/speaker.

That circuit board is a classic example of dollar store products.

Neat design.

You can setup a magnet and a reed switch hooked up to one of the gpio's and a python script to put the pi into sleep/hybernate when the cover's closed to save battery.
