This is the one some 4s suggested. I like it a lot.

Check out this light and this bike-mount.

The flashlight has 180 lumens, more than enough to see the road and be seen by others. A friend of mine uses a similar system for city riding around San Francisco.

If you do some searching, you can probably (definitely) find a cheaper bike mount and maybe a cheaper flashlight. I'm not sure about the science but I think you'll want to have a light with at least 120 lumens to clearly see the ground 13-18 feet in front of you.

I use this as an extra rear light. The clamps ripped (because I am a not so smart, not so gentle giant) so I use velcro to secure it to either my milk crate or my rear rack. It has some eye-catching settings and can attach to a helmet, milkcrate, seatpost, seatstay, rear rack, pannier... to a lot of things. I bought it last May and haven't needed to change the battery until this week (it still lights up but I want it to be brighter).

I attach either this or this to my backpack.

I'm thinking about using the flashlight system for a front light as soon as I can afford it. For now, I use a Blackburn Flea and/or a Cateye. They're both bright and noticeable.

As far as which lights you should get, look for:

  • amount of lumens

  • number of settings (the more the better)

  • battery-life

  • brightness

I need to get back to work. Good luck!

And here's the Pak-lite website for those too lazy to google:

http://www.9voltlight.com/

These things are awesome. Plug it into a lithium battery and you've got light for ages.

And the Photon:

http://www.amazon.com/LRI-AR-Photon-Keychain-Micro-Light/dp/B0006B658Y

And of course the Fenix:

http://www.amazon.com/Fenix-Flashlight-850-Lumens-2xCR123A-included/dp/B00DITWQMA

You could buy him all three for less than $100. But since you said common batteries I might recommend the Fenix LD20:

Not as bright but still gets the job done. Buy the Pak-lite, Photon, and LD20, and have a whole redundant lite kit for flying for under $100. You can probably throw in a couple good Eneloop AA's as well.

I can recommend a fenix LD20 , which can get pretty low on lumens for endurance (70 hrs @ 9 lumens). It is about the size of your E21 with similar function. I can also vouch for the 4sevens quark mini 123, which can go for 6 days on low mode (3 lumens) with one CR123A. This one is much smaller and easier to carry, but the twist bezel operation make one hand switching problematic.

A good flashlight and a very thin/small knife that can always be in your pocket (even women's jeans) are good friends to have.

The $100 price range opens up lots of awesome options. Some of the more well known and respected flashlight manufacturers are 4Sevens, Fenix, Jetbeam, Surefire, Shiningbeam, Sunwayman, and Olight. There are of, course, more brands, but those are the first few that came to mind.

You mentioned that you would prefer a longer body rather than a short, squat one. With that in mind, let's look at some 2xAA and 2xCR123 batteries.

In the 2xAA category, you have the 4Sevens Quark AA^2, Fenix E21, Fenix LD20, and JetBeam BA20. The E21 is both the dimmest and cheapest of the group, with the other three lights roughly comparable. You might want to look into the different UIs to see if you like one more than another.

For the 2xCR123 category, you have the Fenix TK11/TK12, Quark 123^2, JetBeam PC20 and BC20, and the Shiningbeam S-mini. These lights are all in about the same range brightness wise, so once again it comes down to whichever you like the look/UI of the best. And of course price.

In the somewhat shorter body category, you have 1xAA and 1xCR123 lights, which are great as backup lights. Some examples are the Xeno E03, Fenix E11, LD15, Quark Mini AA and Mini 123 and Olight T10.

A couple of excellent sources for reviews of all of these lights are Candle Power Forums (which seems to be down for me right now) and Selfbuilt's list of his flashlight reviews.

Hopefully this is enough to get you started! Welcome to the flashaholics club.

I picked up the Fenix LD20 a few months ago. And I have to say, I really dig it (Can you diggg it?) it takes 2 AA batteries which I wanted since AA's are everywhere, so if I need to swap batteries the likely hood of not being able to is next to nil. It is 180 lumens or so which is very bright and could easily blind some one if you so desired. Which is cool.

I picked mine up from Amazon for around $60. I was pretty skeptical about paying so much for a tiny PEL but it has been worth it. As for carrying it, it fits in my left pocket (clipped on) without any problems. I never notice it poking me or bugging me.

For the record if you want more info on lights go to /r/flashlight. They have handy-dandy charts to compare lights and won't shut up about them because they are constantly spouting info about them.

Hard to go wrong with a Fenix LD20 or 4Sevens Quark AA². I believe they're both waterproof, but I don't know if that counts as gas-proof.

Here's my flashlight. i use rechargeable Ni-MH batteries and its good to go. i've never owned a cr123 light and i don't see buying one anytime soon. but i hear they're brighter. true? also do you use rechargeables?

Thank you for this suggestion, I like what I'm seeing here.

I'm going between this beast,

...and this one.

My concern with the second one is this ridiculous photo, which I'm pretty sure is poorly photoshopped. Like, wat, I see the whole thing is .5" in diameter and only 2.53" long, but...wat.

Anyway, yeah, looking at that first one for srs.

Sorry, I don't know how to post links well, I'm generally lurking around and not posting so much.
