I would say that you might have a chance of being able to use it if you can find a way to keep it cool. I had a friend that this happened to and he ended up using his minifridge as a means of being able to play it. I've also heard that frozen towels are a favorite method as well.

As far as fixing it goes:

Unless you have the knowledge and experience of fixing consoles, you're better off just buying a new one. If you get a new one that is a different model, you can buy an Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Cable (Price will vary) to move your data to your new console.

remove it from the case, and put it in the 360 S. or if I was feeling fancy, I'd spend $6 and get a proper case for it.

if the 360 S comes with a bigger hard drive, then you could invest in the transfer cable, or use USB flash drives to move the content.

Would this or this work? The pictures are kind of vague and I don't quite understand how the hard drive plugs in.

a transfer cable will work, as long as you get the revised version that has the proper end for the hard drive used by the 360 S and E consoles.

But as /u/bemon mentioned, if you don't have a lot to transfer, it's probably cheaper and easier just to use a USB drive.

Was the console one of the older "phat" models? Looks like this . If so, and provided is has that kind of hump, you can buy an Xbox 360 Data Transfer Cable . I'd also like to note that this will also work for a slim models hard drive but I don't recall if the slim models came with one or if it was an add in later. Hope this helps ya and good luck.

If I understand correctly, you want to buy a slim and have the xbox with removable hard drive?

If so you should be fine I think. I didn't have a slim, but I replaced my old Elite with a new one and bought the HD transfer cable which hooks directly up to the HD you want to transfer from, and plugs into the USB ports on the xbox you want to transfer to.

edit: This is the cable I bought (not from amazon)
