There are a few things to think about, and gloves to suit each purpose. Like to use your touch screen devices without taking off your gloves? I have a pair of lightweight smartwool glove liners. They are real comfortable, and work great but they aren't very warm and aren't the most durable material. There may be other kinds that other people have experience with. Alternatively you can use a stylus with your devices and wear thicker warmer gloves like these super comfortable Black Diamond midweight gloves. They are a great combination of flexibility and medium warmth, leaving you enough dexterity to operate a camera etc... Want to go running outside in the winter, look around for a running glove. All of these options won't be super warm but I would rather keep dexterity and put my hands in my pockets from time to time to keep them warm. My warmest gloves and my go to gloves on real cold days are a pair of wool lined leather gloves from banana republic. They are a bit pricier but look great and keep my fingers nice and warm with the tradeoff of being a bit less form fitting and dextrous. I also have some waterproof ski gloves that I wear casually occasionally if its snowing/below freezing or something like that.

I just finished 300 miles of the mountain to the sea trail in North Carolina.

I did it in just under a month.

I had an amazing time, and I would definitely do a long hike like that again. I think I will be more selective about the region I hike next time. I look forward forward to my next adventure!

I used injini toe sock liners underneath darn tough wool socks, and I believe this is why I didn’t have any blister/foot problems. Even after hiking with wet feet/socks/shoes for 4-6 days at a time. I highly recommend these to hikers and also to anyone doing long distance running.

I liked my backpack just fine. It’s balance when off my back was annoying. Like setting it down, it would always feel lopsided and lay on the ground in a frustrating way. But while wearing it, it was comfortable and seemed great. I grew quite fond of it.

For parts of the trail, a bear canister was required and this was a challenge with my pack and gear. Very ungraceful and will make me be more thoughtful in the future about trails I choose. I am happy not to have to deal with that canister every day now that I am done.

I used trekking poles the whole time and loved them.

I brought a kindle ereader with me and was happy to have something to wind down with in the evenings. I was able to read several books while on the trail!

My favorite pieces of gear:

accordion style seat pad

injini toe sock liners

sunscreen stick

Pack:
Osprey lumina 45

My sleep system:

Therm a rest neoair xlite torso pad

tekology inflatable pillow

I also used a synthetic quilt. I don’t have a link for it

My shelter:

single person tent

I used winter window cover treatment plastic for my footprint and was VERY IMPRESSED!! After a month, still done have any rips or noticeable wear.

Cooking system:

A lightweight cup for boiling water
Stove

A sawyer squeeze for water filtration paired with a couple smart water bottles

Great experience. Loved all my gear!

Here are my cheapo recommendations and what I paid for them. Prices can vary as they go in and out of stock frequently. I recently ran 8.5 miles at 73 minutes in 20F and this gear worked well for me...

[ASICS Lite-Show Beanie, Black, One Size $5.23] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AJ38MBW/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item) - Fits comfortably, is very warm and reflective. It stays in place while running. Looks a bit funky but I absolutely love this hat.

Tesla New Men's Compression Tights Under Leggings Base Layer Gear Wear Pants $13.90 - Keeps my legs warm while not being bulky or restrictive. A decent base layer that is affordable and comfortable. I would recommend getting 2 sizes larger than normal though as they are based on Asian fitting sizes and can be pretty small.

[Tesla Men's Thermal & Cool Compression Under Base Layer Wear Long Sleeve -T $13.90] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LNCVSB4/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item) - Same advice about sizing as with the pants, they make a decent and warm base layer.

Mizuno Running Breath Thermo Run Glove, Large, Black/Red $4.77 - The gloves won't seem warm at first but once you are 10 minutes into your run they work really well.

BLACK NEOPRENE FACE MASK $1.34 - It's surprisingly very comfortable and warm considering the price. A great bargain IMHO. Ships from China though so it will take about 2 weeks to arrive.

TITLE Boxing Poly-Pro Warm-Up Suit Black/Red $39.99 - I wear this over my base layer and the set up keeps me warm and comfortable at 20F. Jacket and pants have 2 pockets each with zippers which I find to be very handy.

This can be dealt with.

Here are a few options to consider. First, Zinc will help with the stink. You can take a Zinc supplement AND use a topical ointment on your feet. If you decide to take a Zinc supplement, don't take it everyday and be mindful of your copper levels. OptiZinc has copper included although you want to supplement even a little more. The ideal zinc-to-copper ratio is 10:1.

  • Boudreaux's Butt Paste Maximum Strength Diaper Cream

This works very well because it contains 40% Zinc. One of the highest you can find. I've used this on my feet with success and I've even used it on my face before to help with complexion issues and it never dried me out. I think using daily on your feet would be fine although I wouldn't recommend putting it on your face every day. You can find this in Walmart in the baby isle (where the Pedialyte is located). Start with a small amount and rub it in. A little goes a long way with this stuff, you don't want your feet feeling greasy all day.

  • Crystal Body Deodorant Stick Deodorant

I bought this because I was looking for safer deodorant options. I was amazed at how well it worked on my armpits (much better than traditional deodorants containing aluminum) and the upside for you is, it even specifically mentions being used on feet to treat foot odor. I haven't done that but I imagine it would working swimmingly.

  • Nature's Way Chlorofresh

This product is along the same lines as BodyMint, but much cheaper. It is typically used to deal with bad breath that originates from odor created in the gut, but it has also been used to treat general body odor as well. I recommend starting with the top 2 recommendations first but considering this can be tried for only ~$7, it may be worth just adding it to your odor fighting stack.

  • 10-Seconds Deodorant & Disinfectant

I was told this is the product that bowling alleys use to disinfect the bowling shoes. I bought a can sometime ago when I was running and wanted to keep my running shoes from getting rank. I can't find it right now but I seem to recall a warning about harmful/caustic chemicals coming into contact with skin so use this one carefully if you decide to try it. You should be disinfecting your shoes anyway since it sounds like your issue could be bacterial or fungal, seeing as it spreads so rapidly to new shoes.

  • Drymax Run Hyper Thin No Show Socks

I got these for running and I love them. They are super light and are made from a breathable mesh. The thicker your socks are, the more likely your feet are to get hot and begin sweating. These are a bit expensive but you can think of them as an investment that pays dividends.

  • Mini Moso Natural Air Purifying Bag, Charcoal

These are designed to naturally remove odor. I keep them in my shoes when they're just sitting in my closet. I assume they are working because my shoes don't stink. They are cheap and got good reviews on Amazon. Check 'em out.

    In conclusion

I believe if you are washing your feet thoroughly, making sure your socks are clean and your feet have some Zinc ointment rubbed into them (or the crystal deodorant applied) and your shoes are properly disinfected and dry, I think you will see an appreciable reduction in foot funk if not a complete eradication.

    Good luck.

Which ultra you doing in Wales?

You'll have to have the required kit, so waterproof bottoms/top, gloves, space blanket, etc, etc

Depends on the weather, but loads of thin layers are much better than one thick layer.

I have an ultra in Wales in November and will be wearing

on me

a short sleeve t-shirt, running leggings, socks, trainers

carrying

I will also have thin fleece with full zip, very thin long sleeve t-shirt, buff, waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, gloves.

This will give me the option of 1 layer bottom and 1layer top, or 2 layers on bottoms, or up to 4 layers on top if the weather is really really bad and I can mix and match in-between depending on the weather! The important thing is that each layer is thin but added up gives me plenty of protection against the elements, no matter how windy or wet!

Then i have extra kit that is required, map, compass, space blanket, water, food, etc etc

If i can recommend anything, look at TCA on Amazon, this is the long sleeve t-shirt https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075JNFW4K It is super super thin and fantastic for the summer too, even with its long sleeves as gives protection from the sun. But I found it's great under/over a short sleeve t shirt too as it's so thin it works well as an extra layer. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01B7Q04J2/ and this is my new fave t-shirt, it's long and great for running and feels fantastic.

u/bipolaroid · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This and this would make my new running regime much easier! (boob bounce...need I say more?)

The person I love my most is probably my little sister. She's nearly 10 years younger than me, so I sort of tried to mother her while I was growing up! She is a very brave, strong, determined little girl, who has such a big heart, and is slowly growing up to be even more amazing! I can't wait for her to be old enough to come and visit me, and come to the pub with me, because I love talking to her even now, and she's only 11 :)

Sorry this is a terrible picture, I made like three attempts and I just can never do her justice and can only do stick people - My sister (ish)

Number... erm, 436

And you - have an even more fantastic day, you horribly generous, lovely person you. :)

People make it with all kinds of gear kits, but my personal and subjective opinions are that I would consider:

  • bringing waterproof shoe covers; I admit that my personal happiness perhaps more closely tied to the happiness of my feet than average, also shoes usually take a long time to dry out
  • definitely keeping the 20000mAh powerbank (someone suggested 5k), I have the same one and especially if you're using your phone for nav you can go through it. you probably know this but that sucker takes like 8 hours to recharge, so just plan on that being an overnight thing not a stop-at-a-cafe thing.
  • take vulcanizing patches instead of Park. The Parks are fast but I've found them less reliable
  • lean towards just using a rain jacket for wind conditions. Or maybe bring a wind vest, I got one of those recently-ish and it rolls up so small. The main downside to using rain jacket for wind is it doesn't breathe, can get to warm and sweaty, but whatevs
  • put my computer in a separate lightweight drybag - redundancy of protection for critical item
  • bring something so you can have something warm on your head and your neck (not sure which the Buff was intended for). Per unit mass, I think my fleece neckwarmer is one of the best items I have. Yeah, it's July, but you have to imagine you get a mechanical issue on a pass. Also, downhills. Arm warmers also very warm for the weight
  • If you have a kitchen scale and an extra hour: weigh everything, put it in a spreadsheet, and sort by weight. It seems OCD, and I swear I'm not really that OCD and felt ridiculous doing it, but it was really helpful to put things in perspective as to what items were worth leaving at home due to weight and which just didn't matter compared to my overall packed weight
  • bring a smaller adjustable wrench, or no adjustable wrench at all. do you have bolt-on wheels or seat tube that require that? if it's for replacing cables . . . you probably could do with a mini-version or a Park ST-3 or similar hand socket wrench. A drive-side rear spoke break seems like a sufficiently rare condition, and a full-size adjustable wrench is a sufficiently common tool, that you could probably just borrow one in that circumstance
  • I've found webbing-with-clip more secure than bungees for most applications, lost a down jacket once that was bungeed to a bike
  • bringing lip balm, not mentioned in toiletries
  • extra rack/bottle cage bolt or two, had one of those come off on me once and was very happy to have a spare
  • bring extra spokes that are the right type/length for your bike's wheels (which often means three lengths: front, rear drive, rear non-drive), can tape those inside seatpost

ok that's a long list I'll stop now

I'm not a fan of compression liners in running shorts specifically, but definitely running shorts are great. Running shorts tend to be super lightweight, and the generally have a liner (if you're a dude), so you don't need to wear compression shorts or something underneath. I like shorts that hit mid-thigh most of the time, but if you're feeling fast some 1in inseam split shorts can be great too.

The big thing with running shorts is that good ones tend not to rub or chafe like a generic pair of workout shorts might, and like I said before, they're really lightweight – even compared to a standard pair of mesh shorts.

Here's a couple examples:

u/Shebags84 · 1 pointr/running

Naviskin Men's 5" Quick Dry Running Shorts Workout Athletic Outdoor Shorts Zip Pocket Black Size M https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0797RZ4CY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_XpxiDbNX38M7C

Saw these on a running site. I don't have a pair but they have great reviews and are super cheap.

Another Option are from Super Target - Champion C9 5 inch running shorts - they are $20 and very nice. I've had a pair for several years and they are as good as new.

u/knitting_miscreant · 3 pointsr/running

Do ya'll have any more of that blister advice? I wear running socks (these, for reference) though they're nothing special. My left toe does okay but my right toe is decidedly a different shape than my left due to massive callous that builds a pretty big fresh blister every half marathon or so distance. I'm training for a full and like. While I don't MIND the callous, kind of take it as a badge of honor and proof of mileage, I'm worried about comfort.

Would taping help? Should I try a different sock? Is it proof of poorly fitting shoes?

Edit

Got another one : I read 180 steps (steps? Strides? Strikes?) was ideal and so I got a metranome app to time that out...why does it seem insanely fast? My usual pace is 9.10-10 depending so I know I'm not fast. Gonna try it out this morning on my 4 miler (maybe just the first of 4 miles..kinda, ease my way in). Maybe I just have no concept of time..and distance and space in general.

Edit: a preliminary search I would have done if this wasn't Moronic Monday says 180 is more "elite". I am not what you'd call elite lmao.

u/Artrw · 1 pointr/running

Hello, I am brand new to running (literally cannot even run a mile yet), but would like to get into it for fitness' sake. I'm trying to buy some decent shoes (the ones I've been running in are very old and completely shot).

Here are my needs:
I'd like to be able to run on trails
My arches aren't horrible but they aren't good either, so I need support there
In my running so far, the back of my right calf has been tight (usually not during the run itself, but later that day and the day after), so shoes that help with that would be appreciated
I'd like to keep it <$100 because I'm a graduate student and I'm new to this
I'm generally more comfortable in shoes with wider toe-boxes (or at least not particularly small ones)

The best I've been able to find on my own are Merrel All Out Charges:
https://www.amazon.com/Merrell-Mens-Charge-Trail-Running/dp/B00KZO8DS2?th=1&psc=1

Is this a good choice? Does anyone else have recommendations for alternatives?

u/zorkmids · 2 pointsr/Ultralight

It's hard to find running shorts with pockets. These are my favorites:
New Balance Men's 5-Inch Go 2 Shorts. They make a 7-inch version too.

Zebralight is great (I have the H52w). Highly recommended.

Pertex Shield is a good fabric for UL rain jackets. I like the Outdoor Research Helium 2. Except it doesn't have pit zips. The successor model (Outdoor Research Helium HD) does have pit zips and an improved hood, but it's a lot heavier.

For shelter I recommend the Six Moon Designs Wild Oasis pyramid tarp. It's fully enclosed, with perimeter bug netting, so it has a very tent-like feel, but it's very light and compact. And it's only $175.

u/gingysnap · 1 pointr/pokemongo

Invest in some good shoes and some good socks. ESPECIALLY socks. And I really mean invest, don't just keep buying cheap ones if you can avoid it. They make a world of difference.

I just started Couch to 5k a few weeks ago and invested in some new running shoes and some running socks - these things look silly as fuck, but are my jam - and my feet never hurt now.

Also, a bunch of people in my gym swear by a tiny bit of vinegar to take out the sweat stains/smell. Haven't tried it yet personally, but apparently it's a miracle worker.

And lastly, good job!

u/_Dihydrogen_Monoxide · 6 pointsr/running

I just got these Baleaf 5" Shorts for $17 and I love them. They’re so light and soft. Excellent value. I have an older UA pair that are very similar and those cost twice as much.

u/ChaplnGrillSgt · 4 pointsr/nursing

I wear [VitalSox] (https://www.amazon.com/Vitalsox-VT1211-Graduated-Compression-Performance/dp/B004BKIPXO) for work and love them. At first they felt like they were squishing my legs, but I got used to them pretty quick. That being said, they come off IMMEDIATELY when I get home...but so do the rest of my clothes.

u/wGrey · 68 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

For anyone interested in a zipper option, they're also $15

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=53051196

/r/streetwear discussion also mentioned similar pricing on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Champion-Powerblend-Pullover-Hoodie-Black/dp/B01HIUTCW6

However, not all colors and sizes are $15 like Dick's (ex. Orange, Dark Green, Seabottom Blue) and all of Oxford Grey is sold out already on Amazon except for xxx.
White zippers though (except for maroon) and fewer color options

u/sewmanybees · 1 pointr/March2018Bumpers

This is the exact pair that i have, have had them for a few years now and i don't wear them too often but they are holding great: https://www.amazon.com/Vitalsox-Patented-Graduated-Compression-VT1211/dp/B004BKIPXO

u/posthumous · 2 pointsr/fitness30plus

I personally just wear running shorts. The length depends on what you like, go 7” or 9”.

My favorite are Patagonia but have a bunch of different pairs ranging from cheap C9 from Target to expensive Nike shorts.

Amazon has some ok shorts from a brand called Baleaf, they are cheap but decent enough. Give them a try?

You can definitely wear socks with your five-fingers. In fact, I find wearing socks with mine to be more comfortable than going without.

u/roadnottaken · 3 pointsr/running

these new balance shorts are my favs. I have a few pairs and they're perfect: normal pockets and light and airy. Not too expensive, either.

Here is what I use for my feet:

Heel pads (note: am female so yes, I get the one for women):

heel protector:

also will work in a pinch: duct tape, just tape over blisters. keep walking. Also Oragel - fantastic pain relief that can be used on blisters

I wear Altras which are trail runners and not going to be for everyone because they are sort of weird https://www.altrarunning.com/

u/CleverMorion · 2 pointsr/running
  • Baleaf, available at Amazon. I have a couple pairs of the 7" quick dry and one of the "Pace" 3" quick dry.
  • Old Navy, but only when they're on sale. I saw a couple 2-day 50%-off sales on Activewear in the past few months, but I wouldn't count on one before your race.
u/zuhhed · 2 pointsr/nursing

check out vitalsox. https://www.amazon.com/Vitalsox-Patented-Graduated-Compression-VT1211/dp/B004BKIPXO

my buddy in the ED swears by them, picked up a few pairs myself and aint turning back. They don't offer much in the cushioning department but that graduated compression really makes a difference
