These shorts

After extensive testing, i.e. 4 months of wearing nothing but alternating two pairs of these shorts, I can conclusively say these are the best running shorts ever for ~$20. The zipper pocket on the back is just another bonus. Buy them.

Amazon has their own brand of athletic gear now and these ones have a built in compression type shorts inside which has a pocket on the thigh for a phone. Mine first perfectly (6 inch screen) and I don't feel it at all when I am running.

Thanks, so pretend I'm a complete dumb ass. My bike shorts look much like what describe, and they really help with the friction (but the padding makes running more like waddling). But I can't tell if it's underwear or not. Are you supposed to wear running shorts on top of this?

I use Adidas shorts that are running shorts with a compression liner. They're great and they were less than 20 bucks a pair.

I disagree with the running belt and flip belt suggestions. I've tried both and haven't thought either handled the large phone well.

The naked running band is one I haven't tried yet, that looks better. I instead went with shorts with a large enough pocket. I got the salomon pulse shorts and the back pocket has a zipper and fits my iphone 7 plus. Way less sweaty than a flip belt and less bouncy than a 'race' style belt. I don't use headphones that plug in, and it is a tight fit, so you might need to try it in a store or something first. The north face, patagonia, brooks, etc all make shorts with phone pockets now, some in the front, some in the back

I have 2 pairs of shorts from Baleaf (on amazon) - 7" and 5" - that both have a small zip pocket on the back that is big enough to wedge a Samsung Galaxy 7 in if you need phone carrying, but is better for cards/keys/etc. rather than a phone for me. When I need to bring a phone I bust out the Flip Belt.

They look pretty good and have pockets. They feel a little longer than 5" when worn, though. For more serious runs, I wear shorter ones without pocket. Check out Under Armour. They have good-looking shorts.

These are my absolute favorite shorts; they have a small key pocket in the front interior, and a pocket on each side for gels, gummie bears, etc.

Yea I like to be on the shorter side but still appropriate if I need to run in somewhere. I'd seen [these asics](ASICS Men's Everyday 5" Shorts, Poseidon/Arizona, Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019FOLLGI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_yG4Hyb8KM7WS2) which aren't terribly priced. May end up buying these.
