I've said this a few times when these threads crop up. I'm building a beginner model ship by Constructo, called the Albatross. It's a good starter kit, and has pretty decent instructions in various languages and with pictures. Always read a couple of steps ahead and do some research before you take the plunge as the instructions aren't 100% and some terms don't go between languages well.
I have quite a collection of hobby type tools about after many years as a kid in the hobby, but the kit comes with a decent knife, blades, sanding block, tweezers and pliers. Constructo also do other, smaller, cheaper kits too, but I thought if I'm making a ship, I want a half decent square rigger, since I work on a real one so it's a bit closer to my heart.
Since you're a newbie, let me elaborate on what might make your life a little easier when making the kit.
A few things I would suggest additionally you may need, would be definitely some dress making pins, maybe a vice that's bolted to your desk, just so it's easier to hold, and some decent wood glue. I also use the odd mini cramp. A small razor saw is a good plan too, as it makes chopping wood a little easier than just using the supplied craft knife, especially when the planking is on the model and you can't press down with a knife. I wouldn't bother with using the metal tacks in the kit, use the dress making pins instead, the tacks are shite and leave big holes, they also bend horribly. When you need to bend any wood, soaking it is a good idea, makes it a lot more malleable, there is a lot of resource online to help you with these techniques.
You can view a finished Albatross by /u/Sun_Searcher here.
For the money, I think it's a good one to have a crack at as a starter. I'm after building HMS Surprise, but she's a bit big and advanced for a newbie to contemplate, so when this one is done, perhaps Surprise shall be next, much to my Mrs's consternation.
Here's my last picture, I've gotten a bit further but life seems to be getting in the way at the moment.
I absolutely adore my Zirkel pin holder. (Zirkel Magnetic Organizer ZMOR Pin Cushion https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013D6T4YU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_-T56BbT820X80). It’s a STRONG magnet, and it fans out the pins for easier picking up than my plain circular one from Joann’s. I also enjoy my magnetic wrist band which is from the hardware store and is great for holding pins as well! Those are more on the scale of $5-10.
I know I am getting Gingher 4” thread snips from Santa this year, which are around $12 with coupon/sale. They’re a lot lighter than my embroidery scissors and they have the cap so I am not always stabbing myself when I wear it around my neck.
I’ve been contemplating the gypsy quilter cutting thing, but it gets kinda mixed reviews on Amazon. Other small random quilty notions you could buy: That Purple thang, Clover Hera Marker, a Seam Fix Seam ripper (the ones with the rubber bit on top to gather up the bits after), or Clover binding clips
Adding in a handmade gift could be fun! I’m planning to make my MIL one of these scissor holders. I have one another quilter made me, sans batting and they didn’t trim the bottom so it’s pointed. I think the pattern linked would be much more practical, but idk if the batting is necessary. If you got several small skinny notions, you could even put them IN the scissor case. :D
If you search etsy for "gifts for knitters" you will get lots of pretty options. Other search terms to try include name of thing she also likes plus stitch markers or project bags. I have found some very cute Harry Potter stuff that way. Also try looking for "advent yarn calendar", they are small skeins of different yarns plus a gift or notion sometimes. Those are pricey but drool-worthy.
I'm also partial to yarn socks and good set of basic stitch markers in different colors, like these. They are great for marking repeats and you won't be mad when the couch eats them.
Yes, and I don't put up with it anymore! I love Clover pins, they are Japanese and so nice to work with. My favorite for heavier materials are these flower head pins and for fine materials like your project are these fine glass head pins. Bonus is that the flower pins don't roll so they don't fall off the table. And you can press with an iron right over the glass head pins, no melting.
I love weird specific tools, but you might need to gauge whether your wife already has them or whether she even needs it (I'm more of a casual dressmaker - no self drafting or designing here) but here ya go!

These are mostly the small tool kind of things. If you're looking for a more big ticket gift it would probably be the mat + rotary cutter (biggest mat you can get!) or an overlocker aka serger
The cast members who will trade to you will (should) have a special tag at the end of their lanyard that says something to the effect of "Hey, I'll trade pins with you!"
Maybe someone has a picture of what I'm talking about?
Re: putting your pins on a backpack, I really like this idea! :D You can purchase lockable backs for your pins at any of the shops at WDW. I'm also relatively certain you can find them cheaper online.
Something like this although I can't guarantee -these- will work with Disney pins, the ones in the Disney shops definitely will.
If you use these locking backs, then you don't have to worry about them falling off of your backpack!
Look up how to fold a cloth diaper and you can get pretty thick pretty easily. I have used bath towels and throw-sized fleece blankets to fold very thick diaper covers. You'll need some large safety pins, usually sold to pin back draperies or skirts, and maybe some plastic pants if thats your thing.
example of pins
Chest hair Dandruff
Safety pins to hold the throw i usually have around me, around me while i work. Lol all my typing and moving usually makes it slide off my shoulders, safety pins would fix that XD
You shouldn't use sewing pins, because a lot of them are not rust proof, and they're pretty bendy. Something like this - stainless steel is best.
Found it on Amazon! Less then $4 and free shipping. You're getting a new pin cushion, You're all getting a pin cushion! lol Amazon
I like the Coco Chanel black and pink.
If price isnt an issue then this
If price is an issue then this
If price is a really big issue then
Big happy birthday to you! ❤
My suggestion would be to make a couple of locking diaper pins and use them to secure a onesie and/or a thin cloth diaper over your diaper.

This kind of XL clothes pin, often called a "blanket pin": DIY Locking Diaper Pin
And this kind of plumbing part (not sure what size, will try to edit later): https://www.amazon.com/LASCO-17-6069-Compression-Sleeves-2-Piece/dp/B008E33Y1C/ref=sr_1_5?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1542430365&sr=1-5&keywords=copper+compression+fitting
The trick is to use pliers or a vice to squeeze the round compression sleeve into a narrow rectangle that slips tightly over the head of the pin. I wrecked a few compression rings figuring out my method. Thankfully I bought them at normal prices at the hardware store, not from the rip-off price from the Amazon link!

You piqued my interest so I had a google, I’m pretty sure emery sand powder is what she used.
I honestly think you're shilling these all wrong because you're missing the whole point. You keep downplaying that they are magnetic but thats the main selling point of the product.
There are plenty of options for locking pin backs out there (those are three different links), and these screw-on types are actually reviled by many for warping the studs on the back of pins, or leaving dents on it.
Again, the ability to turn pins into magnets is absolutely brilliant. Locking pin backs is not new territory.
I love the "calabash" aka "gourd" style of safety pin for this! They're small and have a rounded end that won't catch on anything.
https://www.amazon.com/Squids-3400-Glove-Grabber-Black/dp/B002ORK3M2
would this work? or too big.. Honestly I would just use a plastic safety pin (plastic so the metal doesnt scratch the leather)
https://www.amazon.com/Plastic-Knitting-Crotchet-Locking-Markers/dp/B00VNI2PJ2/ref=sr_1_9?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1518041432&sr=1-9&keywords=plastic+safety+pins
I got this set of stitch markers off Amazon. They are great for the price!
Knitting Stitch Counter | LeBeila Crochet Locking Stitch Markers Mix Multi-Colored Stitch Needle Clip/Safety Pins For knitting & Baby’s Clothing Usage(Color Ship Randomly) (50PCS) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01118B22E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_H-EQzb6PG4W4R
I even saw there were some cheaper ones on there too
yes :) get one of those giant saftey pins
What I really need right now is a new mouse, because this one keeps dying on me and I'm resorting to use the trackpad, but its a little over $10.
These pins will also do nicely for my sewing and altering though!
These might help: https://www.amazon.com/Lapel-Pin-Locking-Backs-Keepers/dp/B007IU94Z2
I've used them to secure my Nephew's Disney Pins while at Disneyland
https://smile.amazon.com/Lapel-Pin-Locking-Backs-Keepers/dp/B007IU94Z2/ref=smi_www_rco2_go_smi_g2609328962?_encoding=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0&ie=UTF8
I haven't personally used these, but I've heard of them, and they seemed to get a good score.
I have a MUCH BETTER life hack for your bobby pins: http://www.amazon.com/bwm36-GBLA-Grabbit-Magnetic-Cushion/dp/B0018N6BNI/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ac_5
Yeah, you gotta get the locking pin backs.
Something like this: Lapel Pin - Locking Pin Backs (Pin Keepers) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007IU94Z2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_O7IACb6VT39BZ
Some safety pins are actually quite large if you're worried about making sure people can see them.
You can get them at the parks, or if you want to get some beforehand they have them on Amazon. Here are some: http://www.amazon.com/Lapel-Pin-Locking-Backs-Keepers/dp/B007IU94Z2
They also sell the official Disney ones on Amazon, although they are more expensive.
I would say they are worth it, lost my Taylor Swift pin with a normal back. You can also get some with a screw.
Interesting. I suppose the magnet is too weak to draw your wrist into dangerous machinery. I prefer a wrist pincushion and own one with a top like this. I do have a magnetic dish for pins and a magnet on a stick for picking up pins.
here ya go.
https://www.amazon.com/Lapel-Pin-Locking-Backs-Keepers/dp/B007IU94Z2
Sorry but you got ripped off. Those are not rare or expensive, everyone in the Navy owns probably 5-10 of those, we use them on our mesh laundry bags to keep them closed while they go through the ships laundry service.
