I have two of these. I like them better than cat carriers (which I used to use) because it’s easier to scoop them out from above than reach in and grab them from the back of the carrier, and they’re the perfect size for two bonded pigs 😊

I also use them during cage cleaning

I'm a college student as well and I keep my hammy at my dorms. The thing is, traveling puts hamsters under stress so I try not to bring him home unless I need to (My room mate will take care of him when I'm gone) I use the standard commercial cage I bought when I first got my hamster when I travel.. but that one costs way too much.. I can't be of much help on this topic. Perhaps you could ask /u/sarelcor who recently traveled 800 miles with their hamster :)

EDIT: This is a good article for traveling with a hamster..
If you get a cage that can be expanded using tubes, you could attach this to its home and let it get used to the cage before you travel but I would in no way recommend using it as a main cage

Something smaller and enclosed might actually be better. Like a critter keeper with all the walls covered. If they can’t see the scary things going on outside it’s much better for them and the dark calms them. I actually use a little carrier meant for small mammals. This one. Its worked out well so far!

ah found it http://www.amazon.com/IRIS-Small-Animal-Carrier-Blue/dp/B000VZSSDU/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1405005846&sr=8-13&keywords=hamster+carrier

I got it for $16.49 but it isn't carried in most pet stores. It's kind of small- I bought it for my much smaller syrian hamster. But it's a decent size and does great for the baby hedgehog in short trips

Did you get a critter cuddler as well?! I have one and I love it

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Pawdle-Expandable-Foldable-Domestic-Approved/dp/B019NNMI68/ref=sr_1_4?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1496923830&sr=1-4&keywords=tsa+approved+pet+carrier
I have a big boy - 10 lbs, and he fits in it. He likes it a lot, if I leave it out, he'll sit in it all day, so I have to put it away when it's not in use. Not quite sure what you mean by a carrier good for socializing her.

Are you in the states? Linky

Expensive I know but they do last forever. I've had my own rabbits, foster rabbits, lent to other rabbit people, run over them, dropped them (do not recommend) and just generally not been terribly careful with them. They are really hard wearing. If you're ever looking for a similar heated product I would strongly suggest the Snugglesafe as they've taken similar treatment.

I zoomed in, looks like this maybe? Ice Pod

u/Pterrordactyle · 29 pointsr/mildlyinteresting

Do you not have one of these? I thought they were mandatory for every cat owner.

Edit: Protip- If you buy one or already own one, drill some holes by the latches and zip-tie them.

I bought a Critter Cuddler neckband thing off Amazon. It really helped us bond. You should try it out!
