If you read into what seasoned snorkelers say, they don’t recommend full face snorkel masks, but that’s exactly what I use. I think it’s perfectly safe for the type of snorkeling you’ll be doing in Curaçao. Also, there can be a breathing learning curve for some people to snorkel with the traditional style snorkel masks. I jumped right in with a full face with ease, as did my boyfriend. This was our very first time snorkeling, too! We snorkeled everywhere.

I liked having flippers for zipping around faster in the water, but you definitely don’t need them at all. They can be awkward when you’re getting in and out of the shore, or taking rest breaks. I found that I abandoned them sometimes for convenience.

You are going to have so much fun snorkeling! You’ll find that snorkeling gets more interesting when you go closer to the rocks. My personal favorite snorkeling was at Playa Lagun (trunkfish, parrotfish, gold spotted snake eels) and Cas Abou and of course the sea turtles at Grandi. Klein is a great place to break in your snorkel chops, but the sea life was minimal. Seeing turtles isn’t guaranteed there. It’s just so wide open that it makes practicing a breeze. I recommend hitting the sea turtles after you’ve learned snorkeling elsewhere as you need to navigate people and turtles and will wanna make sure you have no leaky mask and have adjusted it correctly! When you do hit Grandi, arrive at noon. You’ll definitely see the turtles as the fisherman are feeding around 12-1pm. Definitely do your GoPro there. Sea Turtles have no fear and bump right into you!

My recommendation looks like this:

  1. Buy your own gear. Once you go, you're going to want to return, especially once it's free. Check craigslist and local dive shops that sell used gear if you want to save a little money. Don't buy junk. Companies that don't make junk: Riffe, ScubaPro, Mares, Cressi. Go for black silicone as it ages much, much better than clear, which yellows. Don't mess about with dry snorkels (the ones that close with a float when you go underwater), they just get in the way and cost more money. You'll need fins (full heel if you don't want to buy booties), mask, snorkel.

  2. Start off at Marine Room (parking is easier), go out a couple dozen yards and start swimming north. You'll see some sharks!

  3. Head on over to the cove, the scenery is lots prettier, there's a larger variety of fish but there's fewer sharks and rays.

This is my set-up: Snorkel, mask, fins. But I like overkill. You'd do fine with this: Mask + Snorkel, fins. I'd also recommend some socks to prevent chafing.

Once you're in, you're in so expect to be buying weight belts, wetsuits and spearguns in the near future. Have fun and see you out there!

I like these kits from cressi. Cressi Scuba Diving Snorkeling Freediving Mask Snorkel Set, Clear Transparent https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CILSU78/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RdL4AbYNDM2VK

There’s better but those are good enough to dive so very much good enough to snorkel.

Advice: use a lighter and burn the glass deep black then clean before your first day on the water to prevent fogging

u/mathiasben · 5 pointsr/snorkeling

I've been pretty pleased with the Cressi kit I bought a year ago for use during a trip to St Lucia. I spent weeks reading reviews and searching out accounts of gear experiences before making my selection. Since that trip I've used the set about a dozen times since then in rivers, pools and at the ocean and it's held up well. Still works the same as the day I first pulled it on. I've since bought a more powerful pair of fins (Cressi Gara 3000 LD) but still keep the smaller fins for casual diving. good luck!

Yep, that's a sinking ship alright. Aside from all the people saying DM's should help with this, I have a feeling this could help you.

I'd appreciate this snorkeling gear because I just moved to Florida, and live 20 minutes from the beach. So I'd like to go snorkeling. :)

The Elephant Barber is a rare and not commonly seen thing.

Also, something interesting... I have a misformed ear that makes it look slightly pointy, so I call it my elf ear.

u/thedeadlinger · 1 pointr/EDC

That's a good question.

This seems like a good bet. Plus it's waterproof and such.

Also depending on the state or country you live in you can carry a switch blade if you're missing an arm. ;)

I have a Cressi snorkel set I got on Amazon for ~$40 that I've been very happy with.

I just picked up a bunch of gear. Was told to go with Neosport for anything Neoprene as they're an offshoot of Henderson and make decent stuff. Everything fits fine and seem to be a decent quality.

Mares Avanti Quattro Plus Fins. Bungee strap will be useful if you're going to be diving from a beach.

I just got these, they are pretty grippy. Though long races you will get sweaty.

We bought two sets of these inexpensive sets, they come with a storage bag that makes drying them out on the ship easy (either on your balcony or shower). We used them in Cozumel in 2015 and Bermuda this year. I would also buy a cheap pair of water shoes. I personally preferred water shoes to fins because we were mostly in shallow water. Whatever you decide, wear something on your feet, too many sharp rocks and sea urchins. https://www.amazon.com/Seavenger-Diving-Snorkel-2-windows-Tempered/dp/B00H4FG418/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1474472135&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=Seaavanger

Maybe you should have a bit more try with the snorkel set. I Love my [new snorkel mask] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072V4FCMM)! I snorkel every weekend and couldn't find a good-fitting mask that didn't leak. I went through at least six different masks in the past year only to be disappointed each time...until I bought this mask! I have been wearing this mask for a month with ZERO problems! No leaking! No water coming in through the snorkel or mask! It works perfectly!

u/Venezuellionaire · 1 pointr/bermuda

Yupe! I've seen a lot of tourists wearig a full face mask like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GEW5X5Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_FRC7xb9DKJSKA
However, i would recommend going for a cressi mask, worst case if you dont use them you can return them on amazon.

Edit: i have this mask Cressi Scuba Diving Snorkeling Freediving Mask Snorkel Set, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0067BGZBE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_zTC7xbD7T0VQ5

u/cc12floz · 3 pointsr/Swimming

You could try a swim mask or if you're not worried about hydrodynamics you could go full face mask with snorkel.

You could also try a scuba mask...The seal is formed under the nose so that could work for you.

u/browsie_sfw · 2 pointsr/snorkeling

Here is the link to the one I bought. Not exact but same design:

Seaview 180 Degree Panoramic Snorkel Mask- Full Face Design, (Panoramic Navy Blue / Gray, Extra Small) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01MU3MI81/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2SYIAb6DPGJ2K

u/Dustylyon · 2 pointsr/Whatisthis

They were originally made by a company called Tribord, but you can find knockoffs all over now. Here’s a link to one.

u/DanLer · 1 pointr/Swimming

I'm thinking of using this kind of mask:
https://www.amazon.com/Seaview-Degree-Panoramic-Snorkel-Design/dp/B01K3Q1AYA/ref=sr_1_1?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1491908443&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=snorkel+mask&psc=1

The head turning is one of my problems because I tend to focus too much on it and I end up sinking. I was thinking that using a snorkel mask will eliminate that factor and I can focus on my technique and laps.
