The trick is to have closed blinds on the other side of the insulator. This should give a fairly normal appearance if they fit and look right.
If all else fails, you can always implement a thick, dark, high quality fabric that resembles curtains. If that's not enough, you can make a wood or wire frame to give the fabric inward depth from the miniblinds and glass. If that's not enough, you can further add a lamp between the insulator and fabric to simulate a lit room, and you can even incorporate a window A/C since they are visibly insulated a lot of the time anyway.
It's all about determination, my friend :)
Edit: Mirror blinds are a great style for this purpose. They're aesthetically appealing and I'd be really surprised if someone thought it was unusual that they couldn't see past reflections in broad daylight. Try to use an insulator that blends in well with the scene and, if you still feel it necessary, open up often enough to mitigate any long-term neighborhood concern.
I bought these: The Gro Company Gro-Anywhere Blind https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IB7D1YQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_mlAKBbVZP4HGA
They work pretty well, have suction cups and Velcro to keep maximum light out. He slept two hours later and I showered so I feel pretty good about the purchase. Although the garbage bag suggestion is a great one!
What I would recommend is something similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Chicology-Double-Sliding-French-Truffle/dp/B0077HEL0E/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1413921623&sr=1-1
Or another beige-ish tone depending on your wood. I have a very similar divider to create a bedroom space in my studio apartment and it looks fantastic. If you have room to store it, you could unscrew what's there from the wall and put it in your closet until time to move out.
Rachel O'Leary reviewed this snail trap on her YouTube channel and said it worked pretty well.
Lowes sells paper ones for fairly cheap, or you can get Gro anywhere Blind: http://www.amazon.com/The-Gro-Company-Gro-Anywhere-Blind/dp/B00IB7D1YQ
The latter is handy so you can use it if going to visit grandparents, traveling, etc. If you have only one window it's worth it--if more it might be better going for the paper ones.
Actually, ignore that, I just found it. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dressmakers-Squared-Pattern-Paper-15m/dp/B006LFJRD4/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1472155930&sr=8-13&keywords=squared+paper
I've decided to use this, then tape it to card. It does have faint 1cm squares, but I don't think there is a huge issue. Sorry if it is not what you are looking for, but it works for my group!
Trigrips: $6 in-store http://www.sears.com/craftsman-trigrips-non-slip-work-supports/p-00934765000P
Or $10 with prime: www.amazon.com/Craftsman-TriGrips-Non-Slip-Work-Supports/dp/B00E0OJEPO
https://www.amazon.com/The-Gro-Company-Gro-Anywhere-Blind/dp/B00IB7D1YQ
This may or may not be more appealing than replacing the cute blinds, but I bought this portable blackout blind for my son and we've used it under his curtains for the past year or so.
We just pull some of the suction cups off and let it hang loose on one side when we want to let the light in, but again, full-on blinds may be more desirable depending on window shape / size, etc.
Problem solved
