I know plumbers use an endoscope to check pipes:

Actually, FLIR Cameras that look like cameras or camcorders are pretty damn common. The pistol-grip FLIR cameras are common for maintenance, and the scope is common on weapons.

What you failed to mention is the fact that FLIR cameras come in all styles and sizes, from iPhone attachment, to webcam, to security, to modern camcorders.

The camera in the video doesn't look to be a thermal or IR camera, but you're pretty much wrong in your assessment that "Oh, those cameras don't look like that".

I was thinking that, or a previous occupants had a pet (something) crawl into the register and died. You can get an Android powered endoscope for under $30 and inspect the duct work yourself.
