Yeah, it's an amazing projector except the 4K60Hz HDR gaming :(

It's big, but quality projectors are big for a reason heh.

I use Carls FlexiWhite myelf in a completely light controlled room and it's great.

FlexiGrey should be nice with a lower contrast projector like that (compared to an expensive Sony or JVC I mean) and if there is some light.

Your seating is too wide for an ALR screen with gain IMO.

If you want something simpler though you could just go for this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I4WTFM0/ref=twister_B01J29Z4G4

My friend has that screen and it's nice. 1.0 gain, grey, but not too dark. Feels the same as my Carls material.

All these cheap vinyl screens are pretty much the same material and performance IMO.

u/CaptainComedy · 1 pointr/Costco

I wouldn't do OLED over 65. Price point makes the price/value ratio drop like a rock. I know it's weird, but consider a projector once you're thinking $2500 and up. If your space is somewhere you can control light pretty well, you can have a 150" screen for 300 bucks and a decent projector for $750!

If you wanna get into the early stages of researching projectors, definitely check out Wirecutter. Their TV review articles are stellar too.

As for Costco, I'd honestly say you can't go wrong with LG at the large sizes, but depending on how picky you are about visuals, you might not want to go with "entry level" (clumsy term, but the quickest) ones like the Samsung 6/7 series. I also don't know that Vizio is that unreliable of a brand. With the warranty, you practically don't have to worry about it, but if you're swearing them off, you've probably got good reasons.

I'd start with checking out the cheapest LGs at the size you like at your local warehouse. If you want to get really bold, ask for a remote so you can poke around the settings menu and see what the TV can do when it isn't in stupid, bright, saturated, overblown "Standard" or "Dynamic" mode. But keep in mind, for the price you'll spend on an 82 inch TV (they don't carry 80s), you could do a mid to high-end projector and make it as big as you want. Just something to think about! Does that help at all?

u/philosoraptor362 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

You should look into a UST (Ultra Short Throw) projector. You can put it a foot or so in front of the screen and still get a 100" picture with decent brightness during the day. I haven't actually gotten one, but currently researching it.

There aren't that many options but the two I'm looking into getting are:

  • ViewSonic PX800HD for ~$1300
  • Epson LS100 for ~$3000. Just announced and not yet released.

There's also the LG PF100U if you're on a tighter budget, but it won't be as bright.

If you do opt for a UST projector, you'll want to make sure you get the right type of screen which rejects most ambient light:

  • ViewSonic BCP100. ~$1300. 120" version also available. 0.3 gain.
  • Elite Screens AEON CLR Series 100". ~$1000. 0.6 gain.

I've been researching the hell out of this stuff the past few days and still having trouble making up my mind so if anyone has any thoughts to add or reasons why this is a good/bad idea, that'd be awesome.

    Here's some helpful links:

  • AVS forum user's thoughts on his ViewSonic PX800HD + BCP120 screen
  • Reddit user's ViewSonic LS820 + BCP100 setup
  • Throw distance calculator

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some of my thoughts / concerns based on my research...

    PX800HD Concerns:

  • I've heard the ViewSonic LS820 projector (which is way more expensive than the PX800HD) has a very noticeable rainbow effect. Not sure if the PX800HD could be considered a cheaper version of the LS820 in which case it would be just as likely to have the same problem, but I'd really like to avoid a rainbow effect if possible.
  • As with any UST projector, I would need to get a specialized screen (Viewsonic BCP100 or Elite Screens AEON CLR 100") for optimal viewing experience. I'm worried that the PX800HD will not be bright enough to facilitate a high quality movie experience when combined with the low gain BCP100 screen (or AEON).

    LS100 Pros:

  • Isn't DLP so as far as I can tell, so it would not have a potential rainbow effect
  • Accepts 4k input. Although, Netflix is really the only 4k source I would have access to, so 4k doesn’t matter too much to me at the moment.
  • Probably a big jump in image quality and most certainly contrast.
  • Double the lumen output, so I would probably be safe to assume it would be bright enough for movie watching while still capable of producing inky blacks.
  • Epson is well known for their quality customer service and warranty support. Same might be true for ViewSonic, but I haven't heard much about them.

    Cons:

  • EXPENSIVE!!
  • No word on a release date other than "this Fall"

u/homeboi808 · 1 pointr/hometheater

It's an IPS display (says so in the Overview section) and I don't think it has FALD. It may have looked great in the store, but at night, it won't be close to OLED.

Since you may be considering a projector. With blackout curtains, you can enjoy a >100" screen. Take note that it'd be 1080p, but it would look fantastic. Here is Zeos' DIY 21x9 setup. Now, that's on an ivory screen (white has worse contrast), if you got a grey screen, the contrast would be better (you just need a brighter projector, and his is only 2000 lumen, so that's easily accomplishable).

You could get this projector for $2500.

As for the screen, assuming you want 16x9 and a fixed screen, you can get either a grey screen (1.0 gain vs 1.1 of white) or a high contrast screen (0.95 gain). Now, 0.95 is better of course (and more expensive), but once you calibrate it, it loses some lumen output, so grey is better.

Screen size:

120" for $300, projector would probably need to be 13ft-18ft (depending on how much lumen loss there is after calibration).

135" for $380, projector would probably need to be 13ft 2in (can't do 13FT due to zoom lens not going that close at that screen size) to 17ft.

150" for $500, projector would probably need to be 14ft 7in to 16ft away.

If wanting a tv, get the best 2017 Sony you can afford.

Sure! Let's see.

  • You opted to go with the 6500, good call.
  • Why the B150? I myself recommended them a while, but the H110 is that much cheaper that I'd go with that if the mainboard is of no priority.
  • The SSD is one of the worst on the market, and a scam. I highly recommend to get another one.
  • A GTX 960 can be a good choice if combined with a low-powered psu to save a proper amount of money. If not – like here, as the CX600 is not cheap – the R9 380X for 10€ more is a way better deal.
  • Case looks nice, as usual for fractal.
  • The display is small and not cheap enough. You can get a 24" IPS display for 20€ more, http://www.amazon.de/LG-24MP47HQ-P-AEU-Monitor-D-Sub-Reaktionszeit/dp/B00Y81219K/ref=sr_1_6
  • The keyboard is quite expensive for not even being a mechanical keyboard, but if you like its featureset, I don't want to speak against it too much

I think the essence is that I would recommend to the build I recommended in https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/48a5a3/first_gaming_build/d0i0bfz, switch the mainboard to the Bazooka or the H110 if you want to save on it, and pick whatever case you like.
u/AnInnO · 1 pointr/projectors

If your projector zoom setting is already at the widest setting you will need to re-mount it further back.

Is it a pain in the ass? Yup. But, here is a handy tool for you to use that will get you very close when making measurements!

If you'd like to save a more than a few bucks, and don't mind waiting a bit, I would order from XY Screen via their website or Alibaba. Ordering via Alibaba will give you some room to negotiate and break up your payments via PayPal to circumvent the current Chinese good tariffs currently in place. This is a bit riskier, but with PayPal being on the buyers side most of the time in payment/return/damaged item resolutions, I liked my chances and ordered one last week. Here is their website: http://www.xy-screen.com/xy_en/products/index.asp

Keep in mind that these are not ALR screens, but XY Screen does have grey options that will help with contrast in ambient light conditions. (They do have Ultra Short Throw specific ALR screens, but do not confuse these with ones that will work with your projector.

Hope this all helps! If you have more questions, feel free to DM me.

Thanks. Projector is a BenQ HT1075. It's 1080p and 3D capable. Cost around 800 but it looks like the price went down. We bought glasses too (see link below). Screen is a white Silver Ticket 110". That's around 200.

It's an incredible viewing experience, I wouldn't go back to a television after this. Only downside is you have to be diligent about light control. We have blackouts on most of the windows which work well. But need to find a solution for the high windows.

yeah the sound transparent ones are more expensive:

https://www.amazon.com/Elite-Screens-Sable-Frame-120-inch/dp/B008M11Y9U01

Anyway, it's your choice but I'd drop a bit more money to make it so you have a big screen. Big is beautiful, especially with such a long room. If you can fit the speakers next to the screen instead and save money that's great though of course.

u/eternalistic · 2 pointsr/hometheater

We show movies outside during the Summer and set up a popcorn machine and a snow cone machine and it's a lot of fun. Probably have 20-30 people over at times too.

I purchased a BenQ W1070 for our indoor home theater and take it outside and place it on an end table and project it onto a 120" Visual Apex ProjectoScreen. Then just hook up a blu-ray player into the projector. For sound I ran a headphone cable from the output of the projector to an old guitar amp I had and it works well.

We're very pleased with the picture quality and the screen but of course the sound could use some upgrading. It works just fine for outdoor use but not high quality by any means. With your budget I'm sure you can figure out something nice but for the screen and projector we are very pleased.

u/concentus7 · 1 pointr/hometheater

I doubt you'll have to spend that much for a decent screen. My go-to's are from Silver Ticket. They're good quality, super easy to set up, and easy on the wallet.

So I did a bit of MSpaint with one of your photos using the suggestions below. Let me know what you think...

Since your LRs are in wall, you could go with a larger screen that's acoustically transparent. This for example...

https://www.amazon.com/STR-169120-WAB-Silver-Ticket-Cinema-Projector/dp/B00I4WT9Q2

If you want to have a clean look in conjunction with a acoustically transparent screen, buy another in wall speaker as your center and install that at the same height as the LRs, eliminating the need for any center stand. You could go a step further by placing the AV gear to the side on a little media shelf/rack, or just an entertainment center below. Would require a bit of cable channeling if you go with the rack idea of course.

gonna want them lower is the main thing. if possible bring the seating you are going to have into the room. sit down in it and measure to where your ears are from the ground and center appx on that. it will seem way too low, but you'll thank me. surround is specifically mixed to be played at ear level unless its a sub or a height speaker. might even consider raising the screen, or buying an acoustically transparent screen and putting the center behind it to keep all the speakers on the same level. it would have to be in-wall, which is tough with studs, but doable, or super low profile with a deepish screen for the latter, which your neck will thank me for. the absolute most important thing in surround is to put the speakers where they were when it was mixed which is at ear level and all even.

I bought the projector over a year and a half ago for $350 refurbished (normally $600). It's only 720 but looks fine since my couch is 12 feet away. Currently have almost 4000 hours on the projector. I got the screen a year ago, had a 75" screen before. The 100" screen also is ceiling mounted and retractable. I have a 36" Sony Trinitron you can see sitting on the floor that I'm using for my older consoles for a better picture. It weighs 220 lbs so that's why it's currently on the floor, I need to get someone to help me pick it up and put it on the tv stand.

u/agray20938 · 1 pointr/hometheater

You have a fairly large budget, so I'd go with a separates system. Here's what I would go with that will get you a very, very good system:

Speakers: Hsu Research Bookshelf Speakers $1059 for a 7.0 system. Chane Loudspeakers would also work here.

Subwoofers: 2 Hsu Research VTF-15H subwoofers $1709 for both. SVS subwoofers are also excellent here.

Amplifier: Outlaw Audio Model 7125 $999

Pre-Amplifier: Marantz AV7702 $1499 for a pre-amp with dolby atmos (in case it becomes popular). If you wanted to go cheaper here, you could pick up an Emotiva UMC-200

Projector Screen: Elite Screens Acoustically Transparent $470

Blu-Ray Player: Panasonic Blu-Ray Player $100 (unless you just want to go for a PS4, or my personal preference, an HTPC.

Cables: Monoprice 12 Gauge Speaker Wire 5 Aurum HDMI Cables Emotiva 7-Channel RCA Cable All cables add up to ~$90

Subtotal: $5926 plus shipping.

As far as anything else goes, I'd look into either padding the walls with acoustic dampening material, or putting up some other form of room treatment, which would be another couple hundred dollars. Other things you might want are speaker stands, a universal remote, a calibration disk (I like Disney WOW), and maybe a couple other cables for other audio equipment, etc.

u/thehazardsofchad · 1 pointr/xboxone

This may be a bit out of your price range, but I use a BenQ TK800 on this screen at 92".

I have not noticed any input lag and the projector is great for rooms that get more light like my living room. It may be too bright if you are looking to put this in your basement/room with no windows.

If you are an Amazon Prime member, you can purchase the projector in 5 monthly installments instead of all at once.

I am willing to answer any more questions if you have any.

Not sure if they deliver to India, but for blackout cloth I'd recommend Carl's blackout cloth (and not some curly curtain):

I couldnt agree more. The one thing I would say is that if an 8" velodyne was left behind, I bet those in walls aren't too bad. Here is a link to a solid 120" AT screen. I installed this one for a friend about 6 months ago. It took about an hour to put together, but well worth the $370 price. Take the front 3 grills off the speakers and mount the screen over. Make sure your receiver has a way to calibrate the audio characteristics of the screen.

Projectors are cheaper than LCDs nowadays. This projector is fantastic:

Epson Powerlite 8350

and then just buy this screen and you have a great 10 foot screen for under $1500. The only drawback to projectors is you need a dark(ish) room.

u/PrescottX · 1 pointr/hometheater

Check out the pictures from people's comments on Amazon. That will give you a great indication of the sort of light people are working with. Also... take into consideration, all of there pics look better in person. Taking pictures of white projector screens washes out the image.

Any reason why you're going with the thin bezel over the standard for $175?

I have the standard one and it's amazing. You can either get more screen for your money or save alot.

u/greystarnetworks · 1 pointr/hometheater

This one is a 120'. It was right around 3K. I think it was overkill for this application. I have a dedicated room with no windows. That being said the picture is showstopping. I got it for the very thin border, but i've since seen others with the same thin border for much less. I don't know how they handle well they handle ambient light but the price is right and they look just as good. https://www.amazon.com/Elite-Screens-AEON-CLR-Diag/dp/B01ATS97L0/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1494142950&sr=8-6&keywords=elite+screens+aeon

For what it's worth, I have the VPL-HW40ES and a SilverTicket 92" fixed frame white 1.0 gain screen. It's well reviewed,, was relatively easy to assemble with two people, and I've been happy with the results. There is a slight speckle to the screen but it's not distracting to me.

u/FapOpotamusRex · 1 pointr/hometheater

What I did for a cheap screen was to buy "Carl's blackout cloth" and tack it directly onto the wall with finishing nails. Then I bought 4" wide felt tape and taped off the edges. Works perfectly. I'll link the things I bought, but with your size screen you might be able to just go down to a fabric store and buy "blackout cloth" which would be even cheaper. (I had to get carls because my local fabric store didn't sell large enough cloth, but i'm out at 125" so you should have better luck.)

https://www.amazon.com/STR-169120-WAB-Silver-Ticket-Cinema-Projector/dp/B00I4WT9Q2

Behind it I run a Klipsch R-5502. Sounds really good and I would highly recommend.

u/a1blank · 2 pointsr/Android

Well, once you get a projector, the only significant limit on the screen size is the size of your wall and how dark you want to get the room. Larger screen sizes aren't very expensive.

eg, my 120" screen was only $158 and upgrading it to a 150" screen would only bring it up to $350. Either screen uses the same projector ($800) vs a
90 inch 1080p tv for $6000
. As soon as you get into large format TVs, it's always going to be way cheaper to just get a projector. The only downside of a projector is I probably wouldn't want to run it for more than 4 hours at a time regularly, and probably not ever more than 6 hours at a time.

Looking around online a bit further, it appears that it isn't until you're looking a TVs that are 60" or smaller that the TVs will start to be cheaper than a good projector + screen.

Yes. I am thinking about going this route. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0093E81FA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3SDLS9D18M6UH&coliid=IHBMO65T9UZZJ&psc=1

my only concern is that the gain is only 1.1 and with the throw being so far on the projector it might be lower level colors....

This stuff:
amazon link ?

Also have you noticed any issues with the slightly smaller viewing angle?
I'll message when I have all my dimensions! Thanks moldyeggos

116" screen. I picked up this cheapie from Amazon to hold me over until I can afford something nicer. I've spent WAY too much money over the past week already, so this will have to do for now.

Dude! That's so cool. I've always wanted to do something like this. Great job. Congrats.

Have you thought about hanging screen cloth? It's not super cheap, but not over the moon either.

The acoustic is a little more expensive. I was considering the DIY route but the prices of these were not too far off what I would have to pay for the DIY and I knew for me they would turn out looking better.

Grab yourself a good screen to go with it. It will make a world of difference.

I'm planning on getting the 2k Lumen Short-Throw BenQ Projector you mentioned along with building my own screen. I was planning to buy Carl's ProGray since there will be ambient light at times (living room with windows).

My question is: Will this material and projector be bright enough for a ~120" screen to be comfortably viewed from 9 or 10 feet? They don't list a gain factor for this material, but maybe you have seen it in person?

Thank you I just ordered this

edit: FUCK shipping doubles the cost. Gonna shop around for a better deal.

edit: Changed it to this it costs more initially but I make it up in shipping.

The elite screen you listed is normally cheaper:

You can get some of their felt tape and hang it with tacks or command strips.

Get a long 3.5 mm cable to connect to external speaker. I'm going to hook up to a soundbar and sub, but for tonight, just a Bluetooth speaker. I have a fire TV stick plugged in. Will use laptop w hdmi for baker's.

heh, I was looking at this one.

I went with the 5d in my setup (a tinge pricier, but a bit more gain) and had done black widow in a previous house. Paint might be the right choice if it's a kinda non-permanent college situation though. You just gotta be really deliberate in mixing and rolling it on as the aluminum in the paint mix will exaggerate any imperfections in your painting or the wall you're painting on.

Get a screen and lower the view height.

I used this one. I got the folded one and stretched it over the frame. No visible wrinkles.
