Try to recycle as much stuff as you can. If you do other sports/athletic things, I'm sure you own dri-fit (or similar) t-shirts/shorts/underwear. Use that as a base layer.

For a mid layer, a fleece/synthetic hoody would be ideal, but eh, if all you have is cotton, that's fine too. It's a mid layer, it's not supposed to get wet.

For a jacket, you can just buy something cheap and reasonably waterproof, no need for expensive membrane fabrics. Personally, I'm partial to Columbia stuff. Quality is passable, and I've often found last season's jackets or pants for $50 or less.

For pants, you should consider renting something nice (Gore Tex or other membrane fabrics). As a beginner you'll probably spend a lot of time on your ass on wet snow, so...

For gloves, just anything cheap (~$20). Or maybe you'll want to rent something nice too, since you'll be touching the snow a lot. I'm personal to FreeThePowder if you want to spend a little bit more to buy, but keep in mind that leather isn't waterproof unless waxed.

Wraparound sunglasses work in a pinch, but goggles are highly recommended. These Chinese goggles are pretty good - probably the best thing short of spending $150+ for the goggles they copied. https://www.amazon.com/OutdoorMaster-Ski-Goggles-PRO-Interchangeable/dp/B014XKTFI0/ref=asc_df_B014XKTFI0

Socks - wool/synthetic for sure. Generally I tell people to use the sock to compensate for the rental boot fit. If you have narrow/lower volume feet, wear a thicker sock. If you have wide/high volume feet, wear a thin ski sock. But always wool/synthetic, never cotton (this is so much more important than for base layers IMO), and never double up.

You will die in those jackets. Literally.

Here's my winter setup.....

  1. Jeep cap. Keeps the sun out of your eyes and it keeps you warm. You can get them at Ragstock for 5$
  2. A pair of good winter gloves, and a pair of those cheap stretchy winter gloves. Wear the stretchy winter gloves underneath the thick winter gloves. A good tip on whether a pair of gloves are going to be warm, is if you hold a McDonald's cup of ice water tightly against them. If you can feel the cold cup, then they're no good. If you can't, then stay with them.
  3. Your legs will get cold too, so buy a pair of base layer pants. Maybe double up. Wear them underneath your regular pants.
  4. Get a good pair of snowpants to go over your regular pants. Again, McDonald's cup of ice water trick.
  5. Get a base layer shirt to go underneath your regular shirt.
  6. Get a good, thick jacket. Do the ice water thing for the jacket too. My personal favorite kind of jacket is an ice fishing jacket.
  7. Ski goggles. Sounds weird, but your eyes will get cold too.
  8. [A neoprene mask] (https://www.amazon.com/ZANheadgear-WNFM114H-Black-Neoprene-Half/dp/B000LVZVNE/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=neoprene+mask&qid=1573108443&sr=8-1) . They keep your face warm.
  9. 2 good pairs of wool socks. Yes, 2. It gets that cold.
  10. A thick pair of high top skateboard shoes, if you're going to avoid getting winter boots. High top Osiris shoes are good alternatives to winter boots. But you're going to have to get them waterproofed. They're naturally thick.
  11. Ice cleats.

I have a pair of Smith Fuel MX goggles that I DH in. If it comes to any type of pedaling, they become too hot to wear and fog up, even in subfreezing temps. I wouldn't want to wear a ski goggle either. Though I love my Smith IOs and they have fantastic venting, any goggle is too much for any real aerobic activity. For winter riding and ski touring-activities with roughly equal cardio output-I wear sunglasses or clear safety glasses, and save goggles for the passive ski down.

In short, you want lexan safety glasses. Unless it's arctic conditions, goggles are overkill.

We use ski goggles which can be had readily and cheaply in many areas with used recreational shops.

What you want regardless is a layer of foam or something similar that goes along the edge between the goggles and your face. Something that produces a breathable seal.

What I like about the ski goggles verses motorcycle goggles is they tend to have a large, wide face plate similar to diving goggles. I like having that extra space in my field of vision during whiteouts. I also like this because both of us wear prescription glasses and they fit over the top of the glasses.

Honestly both my SO and I did the daytime and nighttime goggles because that is what everyone says you need. They took up too much room and we NEVER have once needed them so we ditched the different types years ago. IMHO its a waste of money. Just get a solid clear pair and go. Less to carry, less to worry about switching back and forth, and the less you have to worry about out there the better.

Let me know if you need any other help. I am always very glad to answer any and all stupid and not so stupid questions you may have. Feel free to PM me if need be.

Former ski racer here. All of our practices were at night. The biggest issue with night skiing is that it is difficult to see contrast in the terrain/snow. I would strongly recommend getting some goggles with hi-intensity yellow lenses like these, which seem to be a pretty sweet deal on amazon. Yellow lenses help make the limited contrast pop at night and on cloudy days. I use my yellow lenses for all but the sunniest days, but they really shine during night skiing.

You're probably not going to be skiing glades much at night, since most areas only light the main trails for night skiing.

With all of the high intensity lighting used for night skiing, fluorescent/reflective gear would probably look pretty nice. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about that kind of stuff to be able to make a good recommendation.

Also skiing at night == colder, so make sure to have a few extra layers.

I'm a cheapskate, so I'll be honest and tell you that much of my cycling clothing comes from Target. But one thing I splurged on was my Sugoi [leg] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0059AKH54/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and [arm] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0059AKHW2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) warmers, which totalled $50, but which are completely marvelous.

Also, I got a pair of [Bolle snow goggles] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039041FI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which are extremely useful when riding in active snow showers.

Not as good of a deal as I got on them but they are awesome goggles. I'm sure the APX is good too, definitely check Amazon for deals. I got mine for less than half price.

Edit: The coal/red ion ones are 50% off right now

I bought a “North” kit on amazon for like $85 last year. Came with the iron, scraper, nylon brush, diamond stone, edge sharpener, and a brick of wax. Pretty good deal and comes with a nice carry bag. I also went to dollar general and bought a plastic shower curtain to put down when I wax for like $2 saves on cleanup

This is super awesome!!

Don't want to be a stick in the mud, but you should invest in a better helmet for her. As cool as the Frozen helmet is, it is a very low grade helmet that doesn't protect your brain very well in event of an impact.

Get her something that is MIPS certified or EPS 4D.

Tell her great job and keep on crushing it!!

I don't sharpen my own ski's but I do have a Waxing Kit. I actually got a good deal it was like $75 for 1 Blue, 1 Red, 1 Yellow Toko NF wax, a brush scraper and Iron. Got it from back country i think. I looked and they didn't have it listed anymore. Similar to (this)[https://www.amazon.com/Toko-Basic-Hot-Color-Size/dp/B00FP3ZD04/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484072114&sr=8-1&keywords=Toko+kit] but with an Iron as well. Cheap and will save you money in the long run

I bike year round, so I know what it's like when it gets chilly in the winter.

Around this time of year, I usually start to gear up, which means the following:

  • Extra pants - I normally wear bike pants, so when it starts to get cold I add a pair of track pants on top. It may not seam like much, but it provides a buffer of air that keeps you fairly warm, and if its snowing/raining, the track pants take most of the beating, keeping your legs fairly dry

  • Jacket - Seems fairly simple, but I try to only wear a rain jacket, and nothing bulky like a winter one. Again, it keeps you dry, and provides a buffer. When you ride, you naturally give off heat, and you want to trap that near you.

  • Face mask - I have two models I use this for most days, I also have a wool ski mask for extreme cold, though the first usually suffices. The thin layer keeps the wind off your face and allows you to breathe quite nicely.

  • Goggles - Ski goggles, work quite well to keep the stinging away. Make sure to get non tinted ones if you ride at night.

  • Gloves - Time to look like a lobster. These type of gloves keep your fingers together for warmth, but still let you shift and brake.

  • Feet - If your feet get cold, my normal strategy is to double up on socks. You can get shoe covers that work even without bike shoes, or if you're cheap (and don't mind looking crazy) you can just put your foot in a plastic bag and tie it down.

Of course, all of this advice is based on riding when its just cold. I have very little experience riding when its snowy (it may get cold here but it rarely snows, just rains).

I'll try find them on the company websites if that's what you meant. I've heard of that percentage but I didn't see one for the dragons. Totally forgot the Electrics were shipping today. Read your post in bed and found them at my front door lol! Awesome!

There are some very good quality goggles available on Amazon for a very low price. I have the Outdoor Master brand with changeable lenses and they were a great buy. If you decide you enjoy skiing i'd recommend buying some. In the meantime, you can prob get a used pair cheaply on ebay or even new ones on Amazon, such as these:

I use a pair of NOS Smith Monashee OTG goggles, them being wider to fit over my glasses also means they're wide enough to have good peripheral vision, and clear lenses means better vision in the dark. https://www.amazon.com/Smith-Monashee-OTG-Airflow-Goggle/dp/B003PB9POI

Do you actually mean tune or just wax? I do both and for the vast majority of the time here's the procedure for waxing:

  • secure brakes with rubber band
  • secure ski to workbench I use http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I4S1X6/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which does both.
  • wipe base, normally I just use rubbing alcohol.
  • drip wax
  • iron in
  • let cool, ideally at an indoor temperature
  • scrape
  • go ski

Everyone that skis more than ~10 days/year should do that. For me it's cheaper and quicker than taking them to a shop. And more fun.

Lots of people will talk about brushing and more complicated waxing. It's all worthwhile, for the first and only the first run. After that run, it stops mattering really quickly. Many people don't even scrape or give a really half assed scrape and let the snow take care of it. If you've fallen with exposed skin, you know how abrasive snow can be.

As needed I'll debur and remove rust with a gummy stone. If you take care of your edges, you'll only need an actual tune every 10-20 days. This is more tricky than hard, and you can easily make a mistake by setting the wrong bevel, or taking too much off.
