Moon Safari by Air is awesome. Super warm, loads of neat samples and tones.

Tycho has many amazing songs. This is just one album but I really love his stuff.

Raising Your Voice... by Hammock is one of my obsessions. Just amazing, trippy, vibes. Wonderful laid back vocals (if you can call them that!) with smooth guitar. Helios is very similar.

Far Away Trains Passing By by Ulrich Schnauss is amazing. Again very laid back and relaxing, wonderful soundscapes.

Opalescent by Jon Hopkins is highly recommended! Soothing sounds for almost any chill occasion.

Hello Reddit Music,

I know you're not a tool to do a job and I respect the community here, but if someone could help me narrow down the artist or anything to help me find this, I'd be forever grateful.

Here's the story:

I used to work in a call centre (in the UK). A company I called regularly for pricing on printer parts (XMA in Nottingham if anyone knows them) had this tune on their hold music but it didn't come on very often. I tried to ID it on the phone (dialling 2580) but could never get a decent enough sample and none of the staff knew either. This was 6 years ago and I've been searching ever since, the sense of relief once I find this will be well worth anything I can try!

The music was generally chilled out ambient stuff (mostly stuff off this album: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Cafe-Del-Mar-Compiled/dp/B0000CC7HA/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1229528678&sr=1-19 )

I've tried a lot of Jose Padilla and loads of artists to try and find this tune, but alas I have had no success. The search alone has introduced me to some fantastic artists: The Flashbulb, Fila Brazilia, fragile state, lamb but I cannot locate it!

The tune, I can only do by description: Genre: Chillout/electronic. There's some water droplet sounds on it and loads of swelling pads/synth in the background, with a piano lead. I can only remember a little chunk of it and I know that's really not enough information, it was seriously chilled with some slowed down drums (although my memory isn't great of the drum loop used, this could be wrong).

Any suggestions to something which fits the criteria? or as a really long shot, does anyone work/know someone at XMA and have the track listing of their hold music??

Failing that, suggest potential chilled out artists that I can try for it and I'm always up for new music suggestions.

Thank you all, any help is very much appreciated.

EDIT:
I'd just like to thank everyone thats helped so far and everyone that's upvoted. I will find this tune, I am determined to!

If I dont then I've got an awful lot of new music to listen to :)

Thanks again all

With no hints to your tastes, here's a quick selection of some of my favorite albums with some basic descriptions. Please let me know if you listen to . like any of them.

Juno - This Is The Way It Goes and Goes
A totally underrated and unheralded Seattle band. Now defunct, they released two albums and a handful of singles, you could call them indie and most closely relate them perhaps to My Bloody Valentine. They create, what my friend called, walls of sound with four guitars all layered together. This is the band I love that no one knows about.

[DJ Shadow - Endtroducing] (http://www.amazon.com/Endtroducing-DJ-Shadow/dp/B000005DQR/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330569288&sr=8-1)
Essential, this album defined the "trip hop" genre (think rap music without the rap) and is a Guinness world record holder for the first album created entirely from samples.

[Radiohead - Kid A] (http://www.amazon.com/Kid-Radiohead/dp/B00004XONN/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330569401&sr=8-1)
A classic.

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
An underlooked "backpack" rap album. CanOx is also now defunct but this album is a spectacular alternative rap album.

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
My favorite album of 2011 2010, Flying Lotus is trippy electronic music, I feel like this album is so next level we won't even appreciate it for a few years.

The Fucking Champs - IV
The band with the awesome name, The Fucking Champs are (mostly) instrumental prog metal with custom made 9 string guitars.

The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
What if Bruce Springsteen made music for late twenty something party kids?

J Dilla - Donuts
Essential. Dilla is the producer's producer, this is a beat tape, 30 some odd snippets of beats and ideas.

LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
LCD just broke up but their last album is, imo, their best. Percussion driven indie rock meets techno.

Lil' Wayne - Dedication 2
Say what you want about Lil' Wayne, Dedication 2 is the best thing he's ever done. This Wayne was untouchable.

Madvillain - Madvillainy
A rap album for the heads, this was two super powers coming together and is filled with so much imagination it sell makes my head explode.

Mogwai - Come on Die Young
Post-rock. A powerful moody record.

Say Anything - In Defense of the Genre
Punk is dead but Say Anything's 'In Defense of the Genre' is a spectacular eulogy.

XX - XX
My favorite album of the last ten years. It's dark, sparse, perfect rock.

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
A whole album made about Illinois and it works.

Burial - Untrue
Deep dark drum and bass (dubstep, not Skrillex dubstep). When it's late and you're walking the empty streets home a little drunk this is the album you want to listen to.

(edited for slightly better formatting)

I know it's a remix album, but Panthalassa has Bill Laswell tastefully remixing some relaxed IaSW-era Miles. Be wary of the Panthalassa Remix album, which is, albeit pretty good, much more EDM oriented.

----
Beyond this, Mark Isham's Silent Way Project endeavoured to cop the sound of this band -- and, all discussions about whether they did aside, produced a pretty reasonable (yet a bit too polished) album. Blue Sun, although hard to find, is similarily good.

----
Dave Douglas tends to lean that way a lot, but isn't anywhere near as as quiet or relaxed as IaSW is. Check out Strange Liberation or The Infinite.

----
Hope this helps. I'm saving this thread to refer back and check out everyone else's suggestions. :)

|name|Vangelis|
|about artist|Vangelis (Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, Greek: Βαγγέλης Παπαθανασίου) is a world-renowned electronic composer and musician. He was born on 29 March 1943 in Volos, Greece. He is best known for compositions such as the Academy Award-winning 1981 theme to the movie Chariots Of Fire, the entire score to the movie Blade Runner and the themes used in the soundtrack of Carl Sagan's Cosmos. His first musical effort was circa 1961 in his country of birth, a locally popular band called Formynx. (more on last.fm)|

|track|Rachel's Song|
|about track|In 1994, an official recording of Vangelis' score was released by East West (Warner Music) in the UK and by Atlantic Records in the US. The album reached the top 20 in the UK album charts. This release contained a twelve-page booklet consisting mainly of stills from the film. On page 3 there is a list of credits and the following by Vangelis: "Most of the music contained in this album originates from recordings I made in London in 1982, whilst working on the score for the film BLADE RUNNER. Finding myself unable to release these recordings at the time; it is with great pleasure that I am able to do so now. Some of the pieces contained will be known to you from the Original Soundtrack of the film, whilst others are appearing here for the first time. Looking back at RIDLEY SCOTT's powerful and evocative pictures left me as stimulated as before, and made the recompiling of this music, today, an enjoyable experience. (VANGELIS Athens, April 1994)"|

My first and favorite goth album must be the Unquiet Grave 1 compilation; my dad and I used to listen to it all the time when I was a kid and I still do to this day. There are some bum tracks on it, sure, but there are many more great ones from artists I never would have found otherwise.

I'm not sure if it's your taste, but another recommendation I might make would be to try out Switchblade Symphony. In my opinion their album Three Calamities is the best, followed by Serpentine Gallery, and Bread and Jam for Frances.

Groups like Type O, NiN, and Manson are about as 'hardcore' as I get, so I won't be able to help you there. Hope this helps!

Ya see, I'm not too sure what you listen to and I'm not good with picking just one item. If you don't, I'm gonna throw a few suggestions your way.

  • Rush's 2112. Just recently listened to them/this album for the first time last month-ish. People said it was great, and it is.

  • This Will Destroy You- Young Mountain. Don't know if you're big on Post-Rock, but I really recommend these guys.

  • Vangelis- Blade Runner. Don't know if you like synthesizers, Blade Runner or that noir feel in your music, but if you do, this would definitely be a good addition to your collection.

I'll stop there as to not make this any bulkier. Hope one of those is of interest to you.

Again, not good with decisions so either Yu-Gi-Oh cards, used manga or Jedi sticker.

But for real, What up doe? I'd be more than happy to suggest other albums if you really want.
u/gambola · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I have a whole playlist of really nice SLEEPYSONG (s). I don't have it in front of my so I'll give you the ones I can remember off the top of my head:

  • Gary Jules - falling awake +
  • Blur - Sweet song +
  • Counting Crows - colorblind
  • Susanna and the Magic Orchestra - Love will tear us apart +
  • Air - All I need
  • Bon Iver - Blindsided
  • Iain Archer - Canal Song
  • Bat for Lashes - Daniel (Live Lounge version)
  • Bang Gang - Inside +
  • The Be Good Tanyas - Scattered Leaves

I've put a + next to the really nice sleepy ones.

Also, if you fancy a whole album, This album by Enigma is nice to relax to, though some of it is a bit loud for actual sleeping.

    Thanks for the contest!

ah, i missed your meaning there... i get you. I personally have a fondness for non-mainstream guitars too... making this one guitar of mine by far the most mainstream... :-D

I'm still thinking of recording a wish fulfillment cover with it...

i've thought about getting a peavey roadmaster for the same reasons... but i've got to fix my univox 1246 first... :-/

as influenced by sonic youth as I may be, my main band sounds like a somewhat generic 90s band.

I do have a gig booked in the new year for my new country & western ambient noise band Dream Canyon... seriously... mainly centered around pedal steel guitar. Now that has been done by I guess one person, but we're going to go at it in our own way (mainly because i'm a newbie at steel)... a bit noisier.

so yeah, originality is a bitch... my technikraft hustler is my personal 'image' guitar... because i've never ever seen another one... if you google it, you'll mainly see me talking about it, but occasionally you'll see an old ad for one for sale on ebay.

and finally, i think laptops and software are the guitars of today... for example lucky dragons My 90's sounding band has played with them... and... then they've opened up for Thom Yorke.... ... they're bloody amazing and to some degree devoted to open source and open sounds... you can find their stuff on the wfmu free music archive. I only mention that I've played a show with them because that's how tied in they are with the local LA diy scene, not to make any sort of sonic originality comparison.

u/modeski · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Admatha may not remember it (or may deny all knowledge), but we actually met at an X-Files convention in the late 90s, and she introduced me to the sport of lockpicking.

It was on the second night of the convention, and after the day's festivities had mostly wound down, I found myself wandering the corridors in a somewhat inebriated state. The room numbers were definitely blurry in that hotel, odd.

I reach door 442 and chortled. 42! Decided to bang on the door. 'Mulder! We gotta go!'. Out popped a pissed-off looking admatha. She took one look at me, correctly surmised that I was drunk as a skunk, and decided to shepherd me to my room. Or take me on a recon mission, one of the two.

<insert some ever-so-stealthy stumbling through the hotel, introducing myself to a pot plant as 'FBI'>

We reached my room, or the records room in the Pentagon and admatha bundled me inside. What a saint! I insisted upon giving her some of my bourbon, but it was locked in the safe and I didn't have the combination. Admatha picked the lock somehow (bobby pin probably) and retrieved the bottle. We toasted Mulder and Scully, after which point I passed out and admatha threw a blanket over me and went back to her room. She left the bottle, classy lady.

At a panel the next morning I recalled the lock picking, and admatha told me to go look it up on the internet. I learned the basics and saved my bacon a few times after forgetting my keys in subsequent years.

My item is this awesome new Bladerunner SACD. I want so badly to chill out with a glass of wine and this blasting on the stereo.

Not mentioned here, but some of my (obscure) absolute favorites:

Eyes of the Nightmare Jungle

Trance to the Sun

Brotherhood of Pagans

Terminal Gods

Also, good places to start, pretty much cover most of the basics:

El-P is always a favorite of mine, can't go wrong with Run the Jewels and Cancer 4 Cure is excellent, too. DJ Shadow's first album would also go well with your drug theme.
Outside the modern hip hop universe, I'd also recommend Funkadelic's Maggot Brain and Parliament's Mothership Connection.

I know she's old enough to be my grandmother.... but Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass: Whipped Cream & Other Delights.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41HM6A0CTDL.jpg

As a plus: there's a remix album, 'Rewhipped' thats actually really good, I stumbled on it trolling a coworker with one of the songs.

If you like FSOL, you should check out their alter-ego Amorphous Androgenous.

Tales of Ephedrine is superb!

u/pixelgrunt · 3 pointsr/headphones

I only have the LCD-2r2's with a Burson HD-160d, but Burial's Untrue definitely has some face-melting capability too.

u/brawr · 5 pointsr/Music

It sounds like a huge part of your musical experience was the manner in which you discovered it; I remember being 14 (I'm 21 now) and trading burned CD-Rs filled with tracks from Kazaa, or even being 10 and poking through my mom's CD collection. I think we've sort of lost that, traded in the serendipitous random discoveries of music for an infinite, instant catalog for cheap or even free. Maybe I'm just being nostalgic, but I'm not sure what's better.

Also, sorry to be pedantic, you misspelled Herb (Herp) Alpert in paragraph three. (Have you heard the remix of Whipped Cream & Other Delights? It's awesome.)

u/stilldash · 16 pointsr/Music

Lycia just released an album about a year ago. Tara von Flower has a bunch of solo stuff as well.

I was a goth kid in high school, too. Although I graduated in 2004 so most of these bands were dead already. I got excited about seeing the last Chameleons' show until I realized it was in England.

The Goth Box was a great portal for me, because it had over 60 bands on the track list.

u/filthysavage · 1 pointr/Music

Maybe something like this? Here is a remixed version of a Herb Alpert album. Or are you thinking something more along the lines of marching band music?

u/NovaStubble · 4 pointsr/bladerunner
