Hello,

We receive this question a lot and there are many ways to adjust your Ikea bed frame to work with Spindle's heavy latex. below is the information and here is the link to the article on Spindle's website, Supporting a Spindle with an IKEA bed frame.

Your on the right track with wanting to by new slats as well. Here is our recommendation on the specs for the slats, as well as the link. Proper support for a Spindle Mattress

  • Slats of solid wood, no less than 3/4” thick 1x3 lumber works great -- Oak, Fir, Birch, Tulip, Poplar, etc...doesn't matter -- just NOT ply- or fabricated wood
  • Slats spaced no more than 3” apart. Skimping can damage your Spindle
  • Center support[s] under slats with legs to the floor
  • Plywood is not recommended. It may flex; also can lead to mold/mildew

Most IKEA frames will not offer enough support for a Spindle. Fortunately, the critical mass of IKEA customers has provided a robust hacker community and their DIY solutions can be found by exploring Google Images, YouTube or Pinterest.

This YouTube video highlights one of the shortfalls and demonstrates one way to fix it.

There are many other postings online with pointers on how to add support to your IKEA bed.

DIY Bed Frame for $10 shows a basic solution.Reinforcing an Ikea Bed gets a bit more sophisticatedIkea makes Sultan, a leg for their center beam. You may be able to modify it to work with your bed.Bedclaw makes an adjustable height leg specifically for this type of application

To reinforce your IKEA frame, the minimum modifications we’d recommend are:

  • Use solid slats [just get 1×3 from lumber yard or Home Depot, et al], or buy a slat kit like this one.
  • Add support legs to underside of center beam [we recommend using at least 2]
  • Add support beams with legs: Universal Bed Slats Center Support System Adjustable Tubular Steel with 4 Legs

Additional support may be needed, depending on the way the bed is engineered. Thanks for coming to the Reddit community with your inquiry. We hope this helps and please contact Spindle if you need additional information.

Thank you!

Edit: For visibility the answer to the questions from my post below but ill keep adding to it as needed:

Thanks for the love yall, was kinda in the dumps today so the kind words are so much appreciated. For the questions:

The couch is Poundex Bobkona on amazon (bout $750)

Poundex Bokona Miter Bonded Leather 2 Piece Sectional, Espresso https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X9VB72W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_QulHzb4SB1GKZ

The mural is from Wall26 on Amazon(under $100) and its mounted on plywood boards from the hardware store. The mural has a sticky back that sticks to the boards. Then I rest the boards on the ground and nail them to the walls with very small nails.

Daytime pic album without rgb lights:

Tv stands are just wood boards from hardware store (very poorly) nailed together and then spray painted. Bout 40 bucks for both tv stands.

Floor lamps are by Ikea those are like 25-30 a piece if I recall.

Bed in the album was made by taking king size bed slats sold on amazon, taking another set of large plywood laid over the slats, then laying vinyl flooring over that. About 100 usd in total supplies. Heres the slats:

Leaning shelf was from Target or Wal-Mart but its been about 10 yrs so idk. I know they came in set of 3 then thats about it.

The fireplace tables are by me - i just started it about a yr ago the one in the pic isnt available quite yet.

(Id be happy to give one away once a month to top posts if mods are into that sort of thing.)

The lights are about 20 bucks
Led Strip,TOPMAX 5050 16.4ft/5m RGB Led Strips Lighting Kit,Led Strip Lights+12V 3A Charger Power Supply(built-in IC and fuse)+44 Key Remote https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J51HHSW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_aSBHzbS0KHXAM

Im not a designer but I pick a color scheme, espresso brown and gray for me, and stick with it. start with that and design around it. Anything that isnt a heated surface can be spray painted especially cheap stuff and when nothing jumps out bc its a standout color from the scheme the whole space is the focus and nobody notices cheap or homemade items.

Apartments here mean i cant paint walls so covering lots of blank spaces cost effectively without over stuffing is a big consideration for me along with moving alot and ensuring the space isnt over customized to me.

Heads + Feet up combine to create the Zero Gravity position, which there's a bunch of science studies on the health benefits of. Basically, they sum up to - Head up helps you breathe easier at night and helps alleviate snoring, acid reflux, sleep apnea. Feet up relieves pressure held in the lower back area, putting support behind the knees frees up the ligaments and muscles from the tips of your toes to the base of the neck. Both combine to make the Zero Grav position which is the optimal way of sleeping.

If you want the Head + Feet only use this to drop the price of the MF 300 base

If you want Head + Feet plus expanded presets and sweet massage, plus the ability to more easily move the base in the future (damn thing folds in half!), use this to get a better deal on the MF 600.

Both have a feature known as Zero Clearance so they'll fit exactly within the dimensions of an existing bedframe, or you can remove the legs entirely to put them on a platform bed or one with slats.

The salesperson won't be happy losing out on their commish but if they're decent folk they'll be more than happy you'll be sleeping better.

You have to get an adjustable bed. It’s freakin amazing for GERD sufferers. I have an HH so I always sleep elevated up. I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B074QWYM22?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

It’s super easy to set up, and pretty inexpensive. I bought the mattress and frame for about $750. Get two twin XLs and put side by side. A must for everyone with GERD.

I got a split king bed. iDealBed 4X0134 4i Custom Adjustable Bed Base, Wireless, Massage, Nightlight, Zero-Gravity, Anti-Snore, Memory Pre-Sets (Split California King) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076BRGYNN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_6fLhDb675VHCV
I dont like to be touched when I sleep. Same reasons, hot, uncomfortable, awkward and just cant sleep like that. When it first came in I pulled the 2 halves apart from eachother about 6 inches and it was much better sleeping. We have pushed them together since but she stays on her side. I think the crack between the mattresses makes it easier for us to stay apart and feel like we have our own beds while still being close. Also some people say it gets easier but my g/f and I have been together 11 years and nothing has changed.

u/MixerMagnus · 1 pointr/Mattress

Hit up Amazon tbh. If you guys are able to set them up yourselves (they're not difficult to assemble or anything. Just a bit heavy and awkward to move) you can get a good set for fairly cheap.

Edit: This is from a company I sell a lot of. I've yet to have a guest issue with anything from them. And the price tag is awesome for what they do!

u/wardroid · 1 pointr/Mattress

The bed frame in bassett is customized -- here's the link -- and it looks like it will have its own wood base (so I probably need to unscrew the stands) if I buy this https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Brands-Adjustable-Comfort-Wireless/dp/B01MEG3AB0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523760712&sr=8-3&keywords=adjustable+base+king&dpID=31cIRfG-4CL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Below it the initial one (queen -- but its fully customizable)

Not sure what S&F is but I dont think we have it here in the tri-state area.

I have considered Tempur really hard but from the looks of it -- $3500 will not be enough.

I dunno really -- this Stern and Foster is really tempting but the reviews I read about it regarding sagging is scary. Yes, it will be great .. but it breaks easily // usually right after the warranty ends which is not acceptable in my opinion.

u/SquirtleLieksMudkips · 57 pointsr/RoomPorn

I'd invest in this cheap, yet useful product instead of sitting it directly on the floor. Allows for good air flow under the mattress to prevent bacteria. We're currently using one ourselves.

u/theimmc · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Should be fairly easy to hack one together using a bed like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G6Q45AM

Blissful Nights Adjustable Bed Frame for Storage Beds with Massage Anti-Snore, Zero G, USB Charging Station, Wireless Remote Head and Foot Incline and No Tools Required Assembly … (Split King) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PJ4XHHY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_R.s5Cb6HMBEQ4

The company seems legit and a German motor. They make other things with different names for Costco and such. Their other bases have more reviews on Amazon. I emailed them asking for more info on their company too

Thanks! I've just posted a Home Depot parts list here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ikeahacks/comments/7xn056/my_version_of_the_kallax_bed/duaa7kr/

The trim that you see on the left and right side is 5' (per side) of 1/2" x 1-5/8" Pine Stop Molding. They are filling a gap between my wood frame and the metal frame of the "Bunkie Board" bed foundation rails that the slats are a part of. Its adding support to the rails and protecting two of the KALLAX shelves. (if that makes sense)

The "Bunkie Board" frame foundation/rails that I used are these:

u/RTShark · 1 pointr/Fibromyalgia

You may also want to look into an adjustable bed frame too. I ordered one off amazon, queen, for like $700.

https://www.amazon.com/LUCID-L300-Adjustable-Bed-Base/dp/B074QWYM22

u/val319 · 1 pointr/Mattress

This is an option. Zinus Adrianne Solid Wood Vertical Bed Support Slats / Bunkie Board, King https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DGQK5JV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_IVIXDbNT6YQP4 you pop it on your slats.

u/Kingofqueenanne · 3 pointsr/Soulnexus

I'm a fidgety sleeper so this discovery was a total accident to me! This is the bed base I'm talking about (we use Purple mattresses which are comfy but take some getting used to): https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Wireless-Incline-Required-Assembly/dp/B07CQ8WMBT/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=adjustable+bed+base+twin+king&qid=1562609295&s=home-garden&sr=1-1

Your feet don't have to be super high, but do Mmke sure your shins aren't dangling so that you feel pressure on your knees (does that make sense)? Basically put enough pillow under your lower legs.

u/muchfarts · 1 pointr/Mattress

will this work for a memory foam mattress like the casper:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074TN94VV/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

u/accordingtoame · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

This one!!!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076BSQVZT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My parents have a sleep number as do two of my aunts, one bought the real deal, and then found out about this one from Amazon...the motor is identical to the one they got from Sleep Number, but the base adjusts a little differently.

u/ndsports · 1 pointr/IKEA

It's not that the ikea slats are horrible, its that most of them ( I believe all of them now) are bowed flexible. Problem with an expensive mattress, when you lay down, these slats start to flex downward which can cause wear or sagging in the expensive mattress. You should place it on a stable non flexible slat system, foundation, box spring etc. I am not a fan of box springs because they say that it reduces air flow to the mattress from underneath and can cause mold issues over time. I have an Ikea HEMNES bed and am giving this a try https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074TN94VV/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I read through the comments before ordering that some customers had success using it on a the Ikea Malm bed. No comments on the Hemnes, but I am going to give it a shot.

u/revnhoj · 6 pointsr/DIY

Don't use a solid material as it will retain moisture and grow mold. Humans sweat a LOT.

Just install a regular slatted bed frame. It's lightweight and inexpensive.

Edit: or possibly even this
