For pants that don't work with belts, or aren't loose enough yet for a belt, I like these boot clips. They're actually meant to be used on the legs "stirrup" style but you can clip them to the back or sides of your waistband. They can also be used to cinch the back of sweaters / blazers / heavy tops (although there are also decorative versions available for that). (I'm having a hard time finding a picture as an example, here's the best I could come up with.) Likewise, a wide decorative elastic belt can get you more mileage out of too-large dresses and button-down shirts.

Quality clothing that's in good shape can be worth getting tailored, and it's usually no problem having something taken in. That goes for stuff you have now, of course, but it's also good to keep in mind if you see something you want to splurge on and are worried about it being too big as you lose more weight.

For a transitional wardrobe you might want to stick to cheap versatile stuff for your staples / basics. I'm not a fan of fast fashion but I've definitely hit up places like Forever 21 for things like skinny jeans, knowing they'll last a couple seasons and by the time they're done I should be done with them too. Also try to look for pieces that will "work" even after you've dropped a size or two.

Absolutely get your second-hand game on. Thrift stores, consignment shops (will be more curated and have nicer stuff, a little more expensive than thrift stores, but still cheaper than new), ebay, etc. And pay it forward, donate your "too big, never going back" stuff. H&M has a fabric recycling program for stuff that's in bad shape (torn, stained, etc) (it gets reused in insulation, so rad!).

OMG, yes. I have one pair of pants that's in striped muted greens that would go with so many of my current outfits but it's flared legs and... no. Nope. I'm actually going to take that to the tailors and see what it would cost to make it straight or tapered.

Going for understated classy? I would stick with blacks, golds, and reds. For a more dressed down, festive event, mix in some deep, holly greens, or even a silly novelty holiday piece or two.

Hair down; I would go simple up top. As simple as a black ribbon choker and stud earrings, then use bolder statement pieces on your wrists and hands.

Hair up; I would still say black ribbon choker but add statement earrings or a hair piece. I'm not huge on sparkle, so I gravitate towards brushed metals and dyed textiles or leather, but there is absolutely no rule against those fabulous rhinestone numbers if you can pull them off. Or just stick a poinsettia in your hair. Clip it in though, otherwise it tends to be just precarious enough to irritate.

I grew up with Marvel, and Stan Lee was a huge influence on me as a writer/editor. I may have been the only kid who enjoyed the letters from the editor almost as much as the actual comics.

That said, what I enjoy today is a little darker, and I particularly like comics and graphic novels that take their inspiration from real-life. Torso, based on the Cleveland Torso Murders is a good example. I also like things like League of Extraordinary Gentleman -- which, while it uses characters from fiction, takes something familiar and pre-existing and puts it into a unique context.

I'd love to see more comics that use real-life characters and weird history. They can have a supernatural spin or not. There's just so much to work with: Teddy Roosevelt, the silent film industry and its scandals, the Somerton Man case -- heck, even the lost Roanoke tribe. There's so much fascinating stuff that can be the starting point for a great comic.

It is a mockingbird pin. It reminds me of a when I used to have time for leisure, when instead of only excercing our bodies for survival, we would excercise our minds and read. It reminds me of a book in which faith in the ability of human beings to band together against evil was prominent. And it reminds me of the days when people used to give freely, and makes me wonder if there are still generous strangers in these hard times when so much is on the line.

I have a waterproof, quilted, warm coat with a removable hood that I lucked out and found while thrifting.

It fits me really well (this is pretty rare as I'm 4'9" with matching short arms, have a large bust, and prefer coats that nip in at the waist so I can both zip up my jacket while not look like I'm wearing a gigantic tent for a jacket) but the damn hood does not like to stay up. Even when there is no wind at all this hood will repeatedly try to fall off my head. It just won't stay in place! I end up walking looking like an idiot with one hand holding my hood in place.

Is there something I can do to keep my dumb hood in place? I thought maybe buying something like this might help but I wanted to ask here to see if anyone has any better suggestions. I'm handy at minor alteration on clothing, sewing wise, so those suggestions are also welcome.

I guess I wil tell you a story I like to tell strangers while drinking in bars.

A few years back, (insert person-that-I-am-with's name) went camping at (imaginary lake). We had been drinking all day, and were just hanging out by the fire when we saw some splashing in the water. We went down to the banks to chek it out, and in the dead center of the lake there was a puppy struggleing to keep it's head above water, and a family on the oppisite bank flipping out. I, being drunk, decide that I am the most fit to swim the 100-or-so yards to save the doggy and the day. I hand off my beer, kick off my shoes, and begin to swim out to the pup. When I reach it, I grab on and start to swim it in. Problem? Yeah. This guy is scared, wiggleing, and squirming and I cant keep a grip on it. So what's a girl to do?(I am male) Momma dog it back to shore. So I grab the dog by the scruff of the neck in my mouth and freestyle swim back to land. What I dint realize at the time is that if my face is underwater, its face is underwater. I dredge myself out of the lake, triumphant I hold up the freshly drown puppy expecting a heros welcome. Not even a second later reality of the situation set in. It was time to take pics. While I was posing with my new friend, I noticed the family running their way around the lake to retrieve there pet. Admittedly at this point I paniced. I couldnt let them arrive to find their dog dead and us taking pictures with it - So I did the only thing I could: I threw that puppy back into the lake as hard as I possibly could.

Thats where the story ends. about 80% of th time I dont have the heart to make up more because the person hearing it are in a complete wtf state, and 20% of the time the throw pushes the bullshit line. Either way, I think it's mildly amusing wasting people's time. Just as I did yours.

I'm really petite (4'11") with a small waist and proportionally large boobs (32D). How can I wear open cardigans without them completely falling to the side and behind/under my armpits?
