For reference, discarding took about 4.5 months in my 1400 sq foot home and two storage sheds. I have started working on deep cleaning, upgrading necessary yet ugly items, and storage/organizing. I expect this to take another two months. I am watching "Clean My Space" and "Home Organizing by Alejandra.tv" channels on YouTube now to help with the process.

I am trying to keep in mind getting products out of original packaging, if possible, to limit exposure to constant advertising in my home. I am choosing to spend quite a bit on higher quality products that I love and expect to last many years. Fortunately, I have a budget that allows for some luxuries.

Bedroom

I started with my closet and these great baskets from the container store http://www.containerstore.com/s/whitewash-rattan-bins/d?productId=10037633&q=Large%20Rattan%20Bin%20Whitewash. The closet has a built in shoe organizer and I used my label maker to indicate what style shoes go on which shelf – heels, sandals, sneakers, flats and boots. I also labeled the shelf for each basket. Clothes hangers are all white. They used to be all kinds of colors, and I realized that white is more calming. I am now using these for my socks and undies since konmari folding did not quite work for me on those items http://www.amazon.com/MIU-COLOR-Collapsible-Underwear-Organizer/dp/B009A3HTXY. The folding works great for most of my other clothes. I am still pondering how to organize the nightstand drawers.

Kitchen

I bought a couple of 10" bamboo lazy susans for keeping my oils and vinegars organized in my cabinets. I bought some refrigerator organization units from InterDesign and the Rubbermaid FreshWorks Produce savers. I intend to get Oxo food storage containers for dry goods.
I upgraded to these measuring spoons http://www.amazon.com/Cuisipro-Stainless-Steel-Measuring-Spoon/dp/B00004SU1I and these measuring cups http://www.amazon.com/Sagler-Measuring-Piece-Heavy-duty-Stainless/dp/B00V5EFWTO.

When I was discarding in my kitchen I found I did not really love my dinnerware so I got this set http://www.amazon.com/Corelle-Coordinates-18-Piece-Dinnerware-Service/dp/B00R790CLY plus matching lunch sized plates. I love the simple clean lines and the durability of the product. I downsized from a 12 person setting to 6 and it is great.

Bath

Have not done much here yet. I don’t have much need for storage organization in the cabinets. Still considering what I want to do with the drawers. Right now the drawers are still organized with small cardboard boxes from Glossybox, a cut down cereal box, and an empty jigsaw puzzle box. I upgraded my plunger and brush to nice stainless steel containers, and got a toilet paper holder that matches them http://www.amazon.com/Home-Basics-Vented-Stainless-Toilet/dp/B00JB20IDW.

Laundry

I replaced my bulky plastic basket with this http://www.amazon.com/Bajer-Design-Marketing-5234-Basket/dp/B0010KZCFC. It now hangs on a Command Hook next to the washer.

Car

I have repacked the car kit and 72 hour emergency kits in these for my car and my son's car. ttp://www.amazon.com/TrunkCratePro-Best-Premium-Trunk-Organizer/dp/B01AHK0J9Y. We live in an area prone to natural disasters so I like to be prepared wherever we are. I bought a car trash container (http://www.amazon.com/Highland-1932600-Car-Trash-Keeper/dp/B0027QWNGO) and created a little kit in a ziplock bag in the glovebox with essentials. Also, found tissues in a round container that fits perfectly in the door cup holder. I also bought a set of matching reusable grocery bags (http://www.amazon.com/ReBagMe-Reusable-Grocery-Reinforced-Handles/dp/B00Y17OIR4) so I don’t have the mismatched set. Finally, I have these on order (http://www.amazon.com/Car-Hammer-Seatbelt-Emergency-Must-Have/dp/B00CB8WM2S). Not organization related, just something I have been thinking that I needed for safety.

Purse

I reassessed what is in my purse. I used a couple small cosmetics bags that I had on hand and now have many things I wished I had at various times. Everything is neatly organized and I know exactly what is in there and why I have it. Everything from safety pins, to pen and notebook (http://www.amazon.com/Marble-Composition-Books-Notebooks-Green/dp/B00WRDIS9I), to a tiny flashlight, a granola bar in case I am out and hungry, a tide stain remover pen, a tiny Band-Aid package, tiny measuring tape (http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-33-115-10-Foot-4-Inch-PowerLock/dp/B00009OYGH), my phone, my wallet, and my keys are always on the little hook. Not exactly Konmari minimalism, but those are all things that I wished I had at various times and I am happy that I will not be caught without again. It is a medium size purse, packed just right, with stuff easily accessible.

Home office

I have not done much there yet, but this drawer organizer is working pretty well http://www.amazon.com/Rolodex-Regeneration-Deep-Drawer-Organizer-21864/dp/B002JG48R4.

Command center

I am currently working on a “Command Center” to keep clutter off the kitchen counter. I have not purchased anything for that yet. I am writing down ideas, measuring, and considering products. http://thehappyhousie.porch.com/20-fabulous-command-centers-to-get-your-life-completely-organized/

Other random stuff:

I moved my CDs into a holder http://www.amazon.com/Case-Logic-DVDW-92-Capacity-Classic/dp/B00005ATMD and they now live on a Command Hook in my car. For movies I transferred them to these Sleeves http://www.amazon.com/Atlantic-74604729-Movie-Sleeves/dp/B002JR2V7C and they now live in a small drawer in my living room. I tossed the packaging because it was bulky and does not give me joy.

I am using these in my linen closet http://www.amazon.com/Honey-Can-Do-STO-02986-Nested-Woven-Esspresso. This box for my jewelry http://www.amazon.com/Black-Leather-Jewelry-Travel-Case/dp/B0006JCGUM.

Not related to organizing, but I am loving these brushes for getting tiny spaces clean. So much better than an old toothbrush. http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Clean-Brush/dp/B003M8GMS6

If you made it this far, congrats. Something that I have noticed is that I can now shop with confidence, I can easily toss or donate the old unloved items, and I am organized enough to return those few items that don’t work as well as I hoped. My home feels much more open and inviting. I know where everything is and my clear vision is starting to come to fruition.

u/ypsm · 2 pointsr/LegoStorage

Hey, I know I'm late to this thread, but I only just now discovered this subreddit. I'm an American having the same problem, about to buy some stuff to organize and store several thousand loose LEGO pieces of various types. I too read the sorting and storage guide and, while it was great in general, its suggestions for divided drawers weren't useful (because they were all exclusive to the UK).

Anyway, I did some searching around, and I settled on some modular clear drawer organizers, to be inserted into some plastic drawers. It's more expensive than divided drawers, but I think it's more practical too, because you can take out each organizer cup, dump out its contents, put it back, etc., without disturbing the rest of the drawer's contents.

First the drawers, then the organizers.

I narrowed down my drawer choices to two options:

  1. IRIS Medium 10-Drawer Cart with Organizer Top, Black, and
  2. Sterilite 20938003 Wide 3 Drawer Unit, White Frame with Clear Drawers, 3-Pack

The IRIS drawers have a useable interior space of about 2.5" high x 9.5" wide x 12.5" long.

The Sterilite wide drawers have a useable interior space of about 2.5" high x 12.5" wide x 12.5" long.

I like that the IRIS has casters, in case you want to store in one place but then wheel them around to somewhere else to build.

I like that the Sterilite is more modular, in that you can stack as many or as few of the three-drawer units on top of each other as you want.

In the end, I decided to go all in with Sterilite, first because the drawers are wider and a little shallower (deeper and narrower drawers are worse than shallower wider drawers, because pieces get buried underneath others, and it's hard to find them), and second because the modularity makes them more flexible. I can put them on shelves, for example. And if I ever need to roll them around (store in one room, build in another), I can always get a dolly, like this one, for example, which will fit two Sterilite units side by side. Also, the IRIS drawers came cracked from amazon, because there wasn't enough padding in the box.

Now for the drawer organizers. I decided to go with STORi, which makes makeup organizers. They have a great modular system of clear acrylic cups, all 2" high, with width and length measurements that increase in increments of 3". So:

  • 3" x 3"
  • 6" x 3"
  • 9" x 3"
  • 12" x 3"
  • 6" x 6"

They stack inside each other as well. And they fit perfectly into both the IRIS and Sterilite drawers, in each case leaving about half an inch along both dimensions, which makes it really easy to lift one out without having to fuss. (I tried to upload a photo to imgur, but it's being fussy. If you're really curious let me know and I can try again.)

    Hope this helps!

I'd recommend something like this to store your brushes and cotton pads/q-tips since it has a cover to protect your brushes from dust/dirt.

Using letter holders such as this one is good for storing your eye shadow palettes.

You can either get individual inserts for your drawer that you can customize to however you want or you can just get sectioned ones if you're feeling lazy. You can also use these on top of your desk for skin care stuff since you use them everyday (I assume). With these, you can prevent your desk from staining and you can quickly wash them if they get gross.

I personally don't like the mini-drawers as I find them inconvenient since they're small and sometimes you just want to grab something quickly instead of having to squeeze your hand in them. Unless you use them for q-tips and cotton pads, since those need to stay covered.

I don't have those spinning ones, but I think they would work well if you have a bigger desk, since it gives you easy access to all your stuff.

If you don't have a lot of storage space, you can use a pegboard like this from Ikea. Or just straight up use small wall shelves.

Hope this helps.

Edit: I recommend storing your blenders in this to keep them clean, but I would make sure they dry first or you can stick something small to keep the lid slightly open.

I’ll start by saying I’m definitely not the most organized person in the world, but my clothing organization system has worked pretty well for me.

I keep the majority of my clothing hung up in a closet. I have it organized by item type - tank tops, then t shirts, long sleeve shirts, hoodies, jackets, pants. Then I have those organized by color, so white tank tops first, then gray, etc.

I have one hanger with multiple hooks on it that I keep in the front of the closet that holds belts and bras.

My bed has drawers underneath it, so I keep clothes in the drawers on my side of the bed. The one that can’t be opened unless I move my nightstand holds all the clothes that I definitely want to keep but don’t wear (out of season or sentimental pieces mostly). The other drawer holds my gym clothes, pajamas, house t shirts, socks, and underwear. I organize the socks and underwear in some cheap drawer dividers like these.

My closet isn’t huge so when I don’t wear an item much anymore, I move it to the closet in the hallway which I almost never open. If I don’t go in there for that item within a few months, I get rid of it.

u/dragonflyjen · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

The over the door shoe holder /u/rainbowfrapp mentioned is one I'd suggest, the pockets allow for things besides shoes - I have one inside my upstairs closet that we have gloves, scarves, and dog stuff (poop bags, collars, leashes, etc) in it to store. I have them in both my kids' rooms that hold shoes, belts, etc too. It gives extra space.

I have over my bedroom door one that is a long bar for hanging with coat hangers all my cardigans similar to this for lots of extra space

for one of my kids, I have a closet that sits in the corner so she has space for stuff, hers is a wood one, so she can put shelves and stuff in it.

this gives great storage on the side bed - book, tissues, pen paper, just some things nearby when you're already in bed reading homework etc.

these are great for sliding under bed

and I havea couple of these in closet that add help with pants, sweaters, etc.

LOL can you tell i'm a mom that tries to maximize space in her house?? xD

Hi there! Hmm... That was a tough decision because just about everything on my wishlist goes towards my house. I did decide on these storage organizers because I'm very particular in organization and I like for my closets and dressers to be very well organized even though my whole place feels like SUCH a mess right now. haha. I'd love to have them to keep everything in order and straight right about now!

u/kaylajacs · 1 pointr/Libraries

personally i would recommend something like this for a few reasons.

one, you don't really want a conventional "table" on four legs with a bunch of space under it, because your aides (or whoever is tasked with cleaning the kids' room at closing) is going to have to crawl up under there to gather the many bits and pieces that fall underneath.

secondly, having the drawers underneath is perfect because you can store other toys and puzzles inside without wasting your valuable shelf space to store toys where you could store books.

and lastly, this one is on wheels, so whenever you have a storytime or craft event in the kids' room and you need to get your toys out of the way, it's easy to roll it out of the center of the room.

we don't have the EXACT table i linked, so i can't vouch for how long it would last, but we have one of a really similar build and it's been there for a few years and seems to be holding up okay.

hope this helps!

I have a similar bag to this

and I also have a bin like the longer one here. (couldn't find actual product, sorry)

anyway, i keep it inside the bag on the opposite end of the skates. my laces, pucks, tape, and spare jersey all fit perfectly in it, and I don't have problems with it spilling or anything.

I actually bought this to store everything. It's great! I have a UV lamp and it stores perfectly in one of the larger bins at the bottom. Holds everything I need for my nails.

I use these to help keep things in place. they have other brands/sizes/prices, too. the other day, one of my friends said, "this is a junk drawer? It's the neatest junk drawer I've ever seen!"

u/amuhlou · 13 pointsr/BeautyBoxes

If you're planning on using them, I'd get a magnetic palette like a z-palette. The ofra ones shouldn't even need a magnetic sticker. I got an ofra banana powder godet and it went right into a magnetic palette.

If you're not ready for that, they'd probably store nicely in vertical fashion in something like this. Like instead of laying them down, stand the cardboard upright in the organizer

u/friedchicken7115 · 6 pointsr/makeuporganization

It’s an underwear organizer I bought off amazon! Pretty handy for organizing small things.

Ufufys are so cuteee I want all of them! 😭💖

I have a reallllly small bathroom with almost no built-in storage, so I've been keeping all my makeup (just a little more than you have) in a clear container similar to this one, which I got at Bed, Bath & Beyond for like $7. It looks nice on a tiered shelving unit and I don't mind everything being in a box. Being able to see everything in it and find things easily is a plus. If it fits your budget, I'd suggest you give it a try!

u/artemisu · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

Minimalism is key I think. Bub has one large drawer of clothes, and he is one now . I found drawer organizers on Amazon meant for socks/bras/underwear, and I just roll up his pants, onesies, sleepers and socks into the compartments. A few larger things like buntings and sweaters I hang in my closet or in the hall closet. It doesn't sound like a lot of space, but with the dividers in place it can fit 24 onesies/tops, 10 pants, 8 sleepers, and a spare sleep sack. This is still more clothes than he really ever needs.

I had a second drawer where I organized future clothes - mostly stuff that had been gifted in the early days.

I only keep the clothes that fit him in the drawer, and I pull out things to donate as he grows.

Edit: all his clothes are organized into three of these containers

u/sfgiantsfan3 · 3 pointsr/BabyBumps

Nice! So we're like 2 hours away from an IKEA so I found these and these on Amazon. I only got one of each and they didn't fill the entire dresser and you can kinda see that stuff is stuffed in between them. They're made for the dresser but I didn't buy enough to section it entirely! Wiser people than myself have used these dividers and posted on blogs about it.

u/craywolf · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Personally, I wouldn't get into wiring - I'd take inspiration from something like this. It has a covered space to hide a power strip inside, which also makes it easy to add more outlets, since you just swap out the strip. Then some holes to run wires though, and a surface to place the devices and chargers.

u/Phate4569 · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I an reasonably sure that the "drawers" linked in your first one are not actually "drawers" as you would commonly think of them. They don't seem to have a slide.

If you look at the bottom corners of each drawer you will see the little wooden edge it sits on (about 1.5 inches). The whole box pulls out. This way you can take it out, set it on the counter and sort/paw through it.

This could easily be achieved by finding a few boxes you like (something like these) and screwing 1x2 to the sides of a doorless cabinet/alcove.

u/EyeshadowWithGlasses · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

I got these. The divided ones hold 2 NB and 0-3mo onesies per square. They fit perfectly in my IKEA Hemnes dresser drawers.

I went through a few options for parts organisers / storage bins around New Year. Does seem us Brits are slightly less gifted in this area than our American cousins ;-)

  • Raaco steel 18-drawer cabinet – oscillates between £18 and £26 on Amazon – drawers are about 6″×3″
  • Draper Expert 28741 30-drawer cabinet – oscillates between £25 and £28 on Amazon – it has lots of tiny drawers, but 5 larger ones too
  • Garland 30 drawer cabinet – shifts between £11 and £12 on Amazon
  • High-street retailer Clas Ohlson also do a range of organisers as part of their Cocraft brand.

I’ve not found any parts organisers with exclusively medium-sized drawers. Typically you get about half the cabinet devoted to tiny drawers (originally meant for nuts, screws, or fuses, I think) and the remaining half to slightly larger drawers.

Another alternative is to make your own drawer system inside a standard cabinet. I’ve bought an IKEA Alex drawer unit (£95) for this reason, and am going to sub-divide the drawers into smaller compartments using foam board or similar. (Search for "ikea alex dividers" on Google to see lots of makeup enthusiasts using this technique to store their bits and bobs).

These seem to work great for underwear/socks/bras/etc.

Why, I have no idea what you ladies are talking about. It's perfectly normal to have six of these along with one of these and countless amounts of these to hold all my craft/shopping stuffs. Plus, as I was telling /u/gingysnap , I have a craft closet as well as our garage is just one big storage closet. I don't think I have a shopping problem or anything. ;)

u/etchedchampion · 1 pointr/organization

If you have a small drawer to put them in you could use drawer dividers like these and roll them in rows. Or you could use something like the ones with individual pockets and do the same thing.

u/falishaxo · 1 pointr/Hijabis

I use these drawer organisers - fold and roll the hijabs to store. I don’t have as many hijabs as you yet because I’m new to wearing the hijab but if you have heaps you could use this and stack another one on top of your drawer is tall enough!

I had to piece it together because I haven’t found proper inserts for these drawers yet. The clear container that has my liquid and cream highlighters are these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01D06SMUU?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
The clear dividers are from my acrylic cosmetic drawers - also from Amazon, but they seem to no longer sell them, unfortunately.
