This sounds like a good question for her therapist, but I'll weigh in with some ideas I posted in another thread recently:
> If she's experiencing separation anxiety (i.e. repeatedly coming out of her room), talk about what might help her feel more comfortable staying in her bed. You could think about getting a special nightlight that she helps pick out, a dreamcatcher, glow-in-the-dark stars for her ceiling, etc. You might invent a special "secret handshake" for bedtime, a "magic spell" of your protection around her bed, give her favorite stuffed animal "magic powers", etc - get creative! :) Teach her how to take deep belly breaths or tighten muscle groups one at a time (toes, then legs, then stomach, etc up to her face) to help her relax. This site has some great ideas for kids relaxation exercises, and there are several books such as Starbright and Imaginations which have relaxation stories you can read aloud (and this book features familiar fairytales retold as relaxation stories). There are also recordings of such stories you can download for her to listen to as she falls asleep, like Still Quiet Place, Indigo Dreams, and Bedtime Meditations for Kids. Listening to calming music can be good too.
>
>The nice thing about introducing self-soothing tools like these is that instead of "lay quietly in your bed" you can tell her to "lay quietly and listen to the music" or "lay quietly and watch the glow-in-the-dark stars on your ceiling" -- something positive for her to focus on instead of worries. You can also talk about what fun things she'd like to do in her dreams, and help her imagine those happy thoughts; even agree to "meet up" and play together in your dreams so she won't feel like she's going to be alone all night. Again, this gives her something to focus on instead of thinking about trying to fall asleep.
>
>I should also add that if she's gotten used to having a parent with her to fall asleep, you may have to wean her from that support gradually. Maybe sit by her bed reading until she falls asleep; the next night, move your chair a bit further away. You can give her brief verbal reassurance that you're there, but remind her that it's time to lay quietly and listen to her music/watch her stars/think about playing in a treehouse in her dreams/whatever. Over time, you can move your chair further and further away until you're in the hallway, and then if necessary, offer to come check on her periodically until she falls asleep. Transitional objects can be helpful during this process as well; you might also check out a book like The Kissing Hand or The Invisible String for more ideas to help her feel your presence even when you're not physically in her room.
All of this applies equally to going back to sleep in the middle of the night (just takes more patience, I know!). Definitely better to take a gradual approach than letting her cry it out though, especially given her past. You might also try to figure out if there's anything she is anxious about specifically; depending on her history, she may be afraid of actual harm coming to her at night. If so, find ways to reassure her that she's safe (have her help lock the doors, if you have a pet tell her they will be guarding her, etc) and know that over time, as she feels more secure in your home, those fears will lessen. The more coping tools you can give her in the meantime, the better.
I definitely recommend learning solfege - Ariella Vaccarino's Do Re Mi Vol 2: Ear Training to Go is how I learned (and I totally recommend it!), but basically you can get much of the same instruction for free on youtube by searching solfege. Here's one with Jeff Rolka, one of my favorite vocal teachers on youtube. I've also just discovered the howtosingsmarter.com youtube videos that have well-done solfege introductions here: Ear Training With Solfege & The Major Scale- Part 1
Solfege is super-easy to learn - basically you'll just be working with the major scale most of the time and that's easy to memorize. Here's one with the minor scale, and here's one briefly explaining the chromatic scale, but really get to where you can sing the major scale well first.
Also, don't overthink it - just make sure you do the work. The process will teach itself - just make sure you set a timer for five minutes or ten minutes or whatever and practice singing the scales and try to wean yourself off your instrument to where you can sing the major and minor scales a cappella. The other exercise is to play the triads (I plan on making a youtube video about this soon and I'll let you know when I do!), and pick which note you want to sing. When learning a new interval you haven't worked with yet, play the triad I, IV, V patterns up and down chromatically and singing the new note each time and it will help anchor it in your ear.
It's a habit worth investing in I promise! I wish you the best of luck!
Not fair! That's some tricky stuff mainly because it's not technically "music" but I'll do my best to find them. I guess in this sense both our statements are true because I can't prove that this is easily torrentable, though when you said "obscure" I didn't think you meant stuff this obscure.
edit: ok you got me here! Here's what I found though.
Cliff Arquettes albums can be found easily in vinyl format. If you bought them and had them mailed to me I would gladly rip them to mp3 or flac and send them to you if you don't have a record player.
As for Don Imus, looking into it. You're into some really really obscure stuff!
So basically, I get your point. This stuff clearly wasn't on any torrent site, but to be reasonble, it's not realy something that anybody except for the rare fan like you would be interested in using the bandwidth to share with other people on the internet. The type of obscure stuff that I look for is relatively unknown ambient music, black metal bands, classical albums, etc. but as far as something as random as Charlie Weaver, you'll have to look into the vinyl scene to find that stuff. As someone who listens primarily to vinyl, I think with your tastes you would have a lot of fun with it. Nw, if you were to be one of the chosen ones to gain access to What.CD's torrent database, you might likely find what you're looking for. But good luck with that.
Very interesting, and thanks for getting back to me. I wonder what Norman's source is there, though, because Pete told Terry Gross on Fresh Air in 2003 that he's never talked to any of the Beatles since being fired. You can hear the relevant portion of the interview here, starting at about 36:59:
> Terry Gross: And, um, I've read that you haven't spoken to the Beatles since that day [you were fired]. Is that true?
>
> Pete Best: That's quite true, yes. It's, uh, y'know. A lot of people turned round and said there must be animosity, y'know, no one's picked the phone up and, y'know, contacted one another or tried to, y'know, resolve our differences. At the end of the day, there are no differences as far as I'm concerned. The door's always been opened. Y'know, picking the phone up, a lot of people don't realize how difficult that is in this particular business...
Pete did say in a 1965 interview in New York City that he talked to them briefly at a Liverpool "homecoming" gig in 1963 where the Beatles played on the same bill as Pete's new band, Lee Curtis & the All-Stars:
> Pete Best: In fact, it was at the time when 'Please Please Me' was in the #1 slot in England, at the top of the Hit Parade. The Beatles had a 'welcome home' performance at the Cavern, and the group I was with then, Lee Curtis & The All-Stars, were, y'know, were billed as second to the top with the Beatles. That was the first time we played with them.
>
> Interviewer: Did anything happen when you were in the same club. Did they talk to you?
>
> Pete Best: They only said, 'Hello,' that was all. The conversation was [a] short and sweet type of thing.
>
> Interviewer: How about Ringo? Did he say anything at all?
>
> Pete Best: He said hello, with a very sheepish look on his face.
>
> Interviewer: Did they ask how you'd been? What you'd been doing?
>
> Pete Best: No. Y'know, it was just, I should imagine a case of them having to say hello to be polite. So that was all, and I had to say hello to them to be polite, so we both said hello.
You can hear the audio clip here, and Pete goes on to say that he played on the same bill with them at the Tower Ballroom when "Love Me Do" was at #17 in the charts, so his statement that it was the "first" time he played on the same bill with them when they said hello to each other must be wrong. In fact, it was probably the last. According to Mark Lewisohn's day-by-day calendar of the Beatles' activity published in The Complete Beatles Chronicle, the Beatles played with Lee Curtis & The All-Stars four times after Pete joined them: at the Tower Ballroom in Wallasey on Oct 12, 1962; at the Queen's Hall in Widnes on Oct 22, 1962; at the Majestic Ballroom in Birkenhead on Dec 15, 1962; and one final time at the Cavern in Liverpool on Feb 19, 1963.
Pete's memory is of it being at the Cavern at a "welcome home" gig when "Please Please Me" was in the charts, and that coincides with that last gig. At the time, the Beatles had just returned from their brief tour with Helen Shapiro, so it being a "welcome home" gig makes sense. That means the only conversation they had, if Pete's 1965 memory was correct, was on February 19. 1963, and all they did was politely exchange pleasantries. He did retell the story in another interview from 2004.
In any case, according to Pete's memory in 2003, several years after the release of Anthology, he never spoke to them again. It seems he may have at least mentioned receiving a phone call from Paul in about 1995 if it had happened, seeing as Pete specifically mentioned that "no one's picked up the phone" and "picking the phone up, a lot of people don't realize how difficult that is". But he didn't, so I wonder if Pete was just glossing over it, or if Phillip Norman was relying on second-hand information that wasn't based in fact.
That said, Pete gave this interview at Beatlefest in 2004 where he said:
> ...Because of the Anthology, because of certain things which have gone on behind the scenes at the present moment, and that's all I'm going to say, there's a strong warning that possibly some time in the future, and don't ask me when 'cause I can't turn round and tell you that either, all I will turn round and say is that we may meet up again and it might be on a playing level, it might be on a social level, it might be just on a friendship level, even though I've never fell out of friends with them but it's just that, y'know, sort of, y'know uh, meet up with one another again and say hi before we leave this planet and pass on to different pastures.
So maybe he's insinuating there that he did once speak to Paul during the Anthology days? But it sounds more like he was dealing with an intermediary--probably Neil Aspinall--who may have passed along Paul's message about "righting wrongs" and maybe meeting up again one day in the future. So it's possible he did receive a phone call from Paul, but it sounds more like he just got some kind of second-hand message from Paul that Pete interpreted as being hopeful for some kind of future get-together.
It would make sense for it to be Neil--he and Pete remained friends, he was the father of Pete's brother, he was the President of Apple at the time of Anthology, he was interviewed in the Anthology documentary, and he was also interviewed in Pete's own documentary he made in response to Anthology, 2005's Best of the Beatles. I don't have access to the Best of the Beatles documentary at the moment, but if I recall correctly, Pete once again does recall the backstage "hello" story, saying that's the only time he ever spoke to any of them again.

Some other versions of this idea:
Mojo: Sgt Pepper... With A Little Help From His Friends Not so great but has its moments.
Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father Again a mixed bag, but has some good tracks.
[Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978 Film Soundtrack)](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sgt._Pepper's_Lonely_Hearts_Club_Band_(soundtrack) Worth it for the Earth, Wind & Fire and Billy Preston tracks.
Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band Great if you like this sort of thing.
Big Daddy: Sgt. Pepper's A lot of fun, a real sleeper album - check this one out.
Cheap Trick: Sgt. Pepper Live Haven't heard this one yet, but it seems fairly well-regarded.
Other full album covers that I haven't heard and can't vouch for: Rangzen, Andy Timmons Band, Branimir Krstic, Paul Hemmings Trio.
You're lucky they stopped there. Back in the '60s, if you were the star of a hit TV series, they'd make you put out a record. Because if you loved watching them play Rowdy Yates or Doctor Kildare on TV, surely you'd love to hear them sing too!
Clint Eastwood, when he was Rowdy Yates on Rawhide
Richard Chamberlain, when he was Dr. Kildare
Adam West, when he was, well, Batman
And I probably don't need to remind you of the musical adventures of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.
Mind you, it could very well have happened. Joe Pesci did release an album as his character from My Cousin Vinny. It wouldn't have been hard to talk him into recording "Harry Lime Sings Songs of Love" or something.
This is awesome.
It's not the same style but check out The Kids of Widney High. They are another band of special needs kids but unlike The Pink Spurdos, the instruments are played by their teachers and friends. Not sure where they are now but I'm glad to be able to say I've seen them play a couple times.
There is a youtube documentary - Kids of Widney High: A Short Documentary If that interests you, check out this other documentary Act Your Age: The Kids of Widney High Story and pick up their music.
Tig Notaro's is hands down the best comedy album I've ever heard. It's funny yes, very funny, but its the best because I honestly think its what comedy is supposed to be.
For those who don't know, Tig was going through a rough patch. With relationships, and deaths close to her, and then she got cancer.
And then TWO WEEKS LATER she got on stage and talked about it. Laughed in its face.
Amazing.
Edit: Here's an Amazon link. Its on iTunes and shit too. http://www.amazon.com/Live-Tig-Notaro/dp/B00AR9GK8A
Thanks for sharing this with those of us who've never seen this. Holy crap, there is so much in this one interview! I probably missed half of the stuff he was talking about but here's some of the things I noticed:
"Did you record others that didn’t make it on the record?
Yeah, I did about 25 all together. There’s a religious song that didn’t get on the album. It’s called “Bethlehem, Pa.” it’s about a guy named Bob Christ. There were a couple of others.
What happens to those?
They’re orphans. They’re on their own."
And we all know what happened to the orphans!
Then there's this:
"A couple of years ago on my wife’s birthday we heard a song called “Jesus’ Blood Never Fails,” and it stayed in my head for so long."
Which he recorded with Gavin Byars
I picked up on this reference:
"How do you audition a road manager?
Well, you take a couple of candidates out toe the Mojave Desert and you leave the car by the side of the road and you walk for a couple of days, and when you get to a stream, the guys that want to drink from a cup, those are the guys you don’t want. It’s the guys that throw themselves headlong into the stream and just drink, those are the best soldiers."
Which is a reference/subversion of Judges 7:4
Then there's this:
"Then I’m doing a film with Robert Frank, who took the picture on the cover of this record. It’s called There Ain’t No Candy Mountain. It’s going to be written by Rudi Wurlitzer and directed by Robert Frank. We’re going to do it in the spring. It’s about a guy like Les Paul who becomes really famous as a guitar designer and manufacturer. Then he completely abandons everything and disappears. And this young guy goes looking for him."
Which became Candy Mountain and is welll-worth a watch for Tom alone. Crappy youtube upload. Tom shows up around 18:30. It's also got Buster Poindexter, Dr. John and other folks.
Really great 80's independent film for anyone who like instruments, songwriting or musicians.
And then this:
"Maybe I should say something about the title of the album, Rain Dogs. You know dogs in the rain lose their way back home. They even seem to look up at you and ask if you can help them get back home. ‘Cause after it rains every place they peed on has been washed out."
To my mind the Sonnets are Shakespeare's greatest poetry, and as great a poet as he is generally, I think his sonnets are under appreciated. Their bottom has never been plumbed; it takes years to appreciate just how good they are (for one thing you need to read a lot of other poetry).
Buy a CD and listen to them in the car whenever you drive. Even with not paying close attention to them, they will sift into your subconscious. There's no wrong way to read them as long as you're reading them. This is my favorite recording of the Sonnets, and this is what I consider to be the best collection of criticism. I have several editions, but I like the Duncan-Jones Arden edition the best.
IIIrd Thyme Out, Marty Stewart, Alison Krauss, Marty Raybon, Ricky Skaggs... and the like are pretty standard. Just stay away from the gospel and you'll be fine.
I'm going to plug one of my favorite albums now: Run C&W they are kind of comedy but they are really great bluegrass musicians. On this album they do renditions of old R&B songs. It's great.
"Here's Tom with the weather..." I love that Tool used the Hicks stuff on Ænima.
EDIT: This thread has inspired me to purchase this - I had a friend i worked with YEARS ago who told me about "Ninja Bachelor Party" and this has the entire film. awesome.
Sharon Olds, Louise Gluck, and Marie Howe are some of my favorite female poets! Also, if you like listening to poetry, I found some of my favorite poets through a box set I got for Christmas: http://www.amazon.com/Poetry-On-Record-Poets-1888-2006/dp/B000EU1PGO
It's an AMAZING collection, especially if you're just getting into poetry :)
Not a sleepwalker myself, but if you're looking for an awesome and interesting story about sleepwalking, check out Mike Birbiglia's live comedy album Sleepwalk With Me, which is also now an indie movie by the same name. Check out the trailer here.
Yes! It was an HBO series before there was a movie. If you like the D then you should really check this out.
